New Testament · Titus §2.1-2.15

Sound Teaching for All Groups and the Grace of God

Passage 2 of 3 · Greek

Summary

Paul instructs Titus on the sound doctrine suitable for older men, older women, young women, young men, and bondservants. He further encourages living a godly life and eagerly awaiting the appearance of Jesus Christ, grounded in the grace of God that has appeared.

But as for you, speak the things that are consistent with sound doctrine.
Bid the older men to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in endurance.
Bid the older women likewise to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God may not be reviled.
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
Urge bondservants to be submissive to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority.
Let no one disregard you.

Notes

  1. 2.2Πρεσβύτας νηφαλίους εἶναι — The infinitive `εἶναι` functions as the complement of the imperative `λάλει` (from §2.1) or an implied verb of exhortation (such as `παρακάλει`), expressing an indirect command regarding the qualities older men should possess. This accusative-and-infinitive structure continues to apply implicitly to older women (§2.3) and bondservants (§2.9).
  2. 2.12ἀρνησάμενοι — The aorist participle `ἀρνησάμενοι` denotes an action prior to or attendant upon the main subjunctive verb `ζήσωμεν` in the purpose clause (meaning "having renounced... we might live"). This is a classic usage where the aorist participle describes a decisive action that must occur prior to or as a prerequisite for the main action.
  3. 2.13τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ — The single definite article `τοῦ` governs both `μεγάλου θεοῦ` and `σωτῆρος ἡμῶν` (known as Granville Sharp's Rule). This syntax strongly suggests that both titles refer to a single person, "Jesus Christ" (i.e., "our great God and Savior Jesus Christ"), although a coordination of two separate entities (God the Father and the Savior Christ) is grammatically possible but less likely.
