Qualifications for Elders and Warnings against False Teachers

Passage 1 of 3 · Greek

Summary

Paul sends greetings to Titus, outlines the qualifications for appointing elders and overseers in Crete, and instructs him to sharply rebuke the false teachers active in the region.

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, in the hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began, but at the proper time manifested his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior, To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
For this reason I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you, if anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.
For an overseer, as God's steward, must be blameless, not arrogant, not quick-tempered, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined, holding firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able both to give instruction in sound doctrine and to rebuke those who contradict it.
For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party, they must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.
One of the Cretans themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." This testimony is true.
Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth.
To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.
They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Notes

  1. 1.1κατὰ πίστιν — The preposition `κατά` with the accusative. It can express either 'accordance' (in accordance with) or 'purpose/aim' (for the sake of / leading to). In this context, it emphasizes the goal or sphere of Paul's apostleship, which is directed toward the faith of God's elect.
  2. 1.3ὃ ἐπιστεύθην ἐγώ — A passive construction of the verb `πιστεύω` (to entrust). In the active voice, this verb takes a dative of person and an accusative of the thing (`πιστεύω τί τινι`). When passivized, the person becomes the nominative subject (`ἐπιστεύθην`), while the thing entrusted remains in the accusative, represented here by the relative pronoun `ὅ`.
  3. 1.6εἴ τίς ἐστιν ἀνέγκλητος — A conditional clause `εἰ...` with an ellipsis of the main verb. Following the command to appoint elders (`καταστήσῃς... πρεσβυτέρους`) in §1.5, this clause serves as a qualification: 'if anyone is blameless [appoint him]'.
  4. 1.15τοῖς καθαροῖς — Dative of reference or judgment ('to the pure' / 'in the estimation of the pure'). It indicates that the purity or impurity of things is determined relative to the moral and spiritual state of the perceiving subject.
