§24τὸ δὲ γενόμενον δεῖ ὑμᾶς ἀκοῦσαι· φανήσεται γὰρ ἀκόλουθον ὂν τῇ ἄλλῃ αὐτῶν ἐπιβουλῇ.
But you must hear what actually happened; for it will appear consistent with the rest of their plot.

§26οὔτε μυροπώλης εἰμὶ οὔτʼ ἄλλην τέχνην ἐργάζομαι, ἀλλʼ ἅπερ ὁ πατήρ μοι ἔδωκεν χωρία ταῦτα γεωργῶ, πρὸς δὲ τούτων εἰς τὴν ὠνὴν ἐνεσείσθην.
I am neither a perfumer nor do I practice any other trade, but I farm these lands which my father gave me; and on top of this, I was hustled into the purchase.
πότερα γὰρ εἰκός ἐςτιν, ὦ Ἀθηνόγενες, ἐμὲ τῆς σῆς τέχνης ἐπιθυμῆσαι, ἧς οὐκ ἤμην ἔμπειρος, ἤ σε καὶ τὴν ἑταίραν τοῖς ἐμοῖς ἐπιβουλεῦσαι;
For which is likely, Athenogenes, that I should desire your trade, of which I had no experience, or that you and your mistress should plot against my belongings?
ἐγὼ μὲν γὰρ οἴομαι ὑμᾶς.
For my part, I think it was you.
διόπερ, ἄνδρες δικασταί, ἐμοὶ μὲν ἂν εἰκότως συγγνώμην ἔχοιτʼ ἀπατηθῆναι καὶ ἀτυχῆσαι τοιούτῳ ἀνθρώπῳ περιπεσόντα Ἀθηνογένει δὲ. .

§27ενε πάντα ἐμοὶ εἶναι, τὰ δὲ τῆς ἀπάτης κέρδη αὐτῷ· καὶ τὸν μὲν Μίδαν τὸν τολ ξαι, ὃν ἄκων φησὶν ἀπολῦσαι, τοῦτον λαβεῖν, τοῦ δὲ παιδὸς ὃν τότε προῖκά μοί φησιν διδόναι, νῦν αὐτὸν λαβεῖν ἀργύριον πολὺ πλεῖον τῆς ἀξίας, οὐχ ὥστε ἐμὸν εἶναι, ἀλλʼ ὥστε ὑφʼ ὑμῶν τῇ ψήφῳ ἐλεύθερον ἀφίεσθαι.
... everything to be mine, but the gains of the deception to be his; and that Midas, whom he says he reluctantly released, he should take, and for the boy, whom he then said he was giving to me as a free gift, he now himself receives money far exceeding his value, not so that he should be mine, but so that he should be set free by your vote.
