Furthermore, these men trample upon the people in their misfortunes.
Therefore they are even much more deserving of hatred.

...they make accusations, and make it clear that not even then did they speak on behalf of the Lacedaemonians as friends, but rather out of hatred for the city and always flattering whoever held power against you.
But now that the power of those men has shifted to this one, they then chose to flatter him.
And Democrates of Aphidna, always sitting by them and...ing, plays the buffoon at the misfortunes of the city, and reviles you by day in the marketplace, but in the evening comes to you to dine.
καίτοι, ὦ Δημόκρατες, μόνῳ σοι οὐκ ἔνι λέγειν περὶ τοῦ δήμου φλαῦρον οὐδέν· §3διὰ τί;
And yet, Democrates, you of all people are not permitted to say anything bad about the people; Why?
First, because you did not need to learn from another that the people return gratitude to their benefactors, but from yourself; for you yourself now enjoy honors on account of what others did as benefactors.
Secondly, because the people, having written it in a law, forbade anyone to speak ill of Harmodius and Aristogeiton, or to sing songs to their discredit.
Therefore, it is indeed shocking if the people thought that no one, not even a drunken man, should be allowed to speak ill of your ancestors, while you, sober, speak ill of the people.
Having spoken yet a few brief words to you, gentlemen of the jury, and summarized my arguments, I shall step down.
It is an indictment of illegal proposals concerning which you are about to cast your vote.
The decree being judged is a praise of the presiding officers.
That the presiding officers ought to preside according to the laws, whereas these men have presided contrary to the laws, you have just heard from the reading of the laws themselves.
The rest is now in your hands.
For you will show whether you will punish those who propose illegal measures, or whether you will grant these honors designated for benefactors to those who preside contrary to the laws, and that too after swearing to vote in accordance with the laws.
Furthermore, it is not possible for you to be deceived by their argument, even if they claim that it was necessary for the people to vote on the honors; for it is impossible to say that there was any necessity to crown the presiding officers.
