§8πρῶτον μὲν οὖν ὡς συνετιμήσανθʼ ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ ταύτην τὴν εἰσφορὰν εἰς τὴν συμμορίαν, παρέξομαι τούτων μάρτυρας, ἔπειθʼ ὅτι οὐ πένητα κατέλιπέν μʼ ὁ πατὴρ οὐδʼ ἑβδομήκοντα μνῶν οὐσίαν κεκτημένον, ἀλλὰ τοσαύτην ὅσην οὐδʼ αὐτοὶ οὗτοι ἀποκρύψασθαι διὰ τὸ μέγεθος πρὸς τὴν πόλιν ἐδυνήθησαν.
First, then, to prove that they registered this tax-assessment on my behalf for the tax-district, I will produce witnesses of these matters; and next, that my father did not leave me poor, nor as possessing an estate of only seventy minae, but so great that not even these men themselves were able to conceal it from the city because of its size.
καί μοι ἀναγίγνωσκε λαβὼν ταύτην τὴν μαρτυρίαν. ΜΑΡΤΥΡΙΑ. §9δῆλον μὲν τοίνυν καὶ ἐκ τούτων ἐστὶν τὸ πλῆθος τῆς οὐσίας.
Take and read this deposition to me. [DEPOSITION] Now from these facts also the greatness of the estate is clear.
πεντεκαίδεκα ταλάντων γὰρ τρία τάλαντα τίμημα· ταύτην ἠξίουν εἰσφέρειν τὴν εἰσφοράν.
For of fifteen talents, three talents was the valuation; this contribution they thought fit to pay.
ἔτι δʼ ἀκριβέστερον εἴσεσθε τὴν οὐσίαν αὐτὴν ἀκούσαντες·
But you will know the estate itself still more accurately when you hear the details.
ὁ γὰρ πατήρ, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, κατέλιπεν δύʼ ἐργαστήρια, τέχνης οὐ μικρᾶς ἑκάτερον, μαχαιροποιοὺς μὲν τριάκοντα καὶ δύʼ ἢ τρεῖς, ἀνὰ πέντε μνᾶς καὶ ἕξ, τοὺς δʼ οὐκ ἐλάττονος ἢ τριῶν μνῶν ἀξίους, ἀφʼ ὧν τριάκοντα μνᾶς ἀτελεῖς ἐλάμβανεν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ τὴν πρόσοδον, κλινοποιοὺς δʼ εἴκοσι τὸν ἀριθμόν, τετταράκοντα μνῶν ὑποκειμένους, οἳ δώδεκα μνᾶς ἀτελεῖς αὐτῷ προσέφερον, ἀργυρίου δʼ εἰς τάλαντον ἐπὶ δραχμῇ δεδανεισμένου, οὗ τόκος ἐγίγνετο τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἑκάστου πλεῖν ἢ ἑπτὰ μναῖ.
For my father, gentlemen of the jury, left two workshops, each of no small trade: on the one hand, thirty-two or three sword-makers, some worth five or six minae each, others worth no less than three minae, from whom he received thirty minae as net income each year; and on the other hand, twenty bed-makers in number, pledged for forty minae, who brought him twelve minae net; and in cash, up to a talent lent out at interest of one drachma, of which the interest each year became more than seven minae.
§10καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ἐνεργὰ κατέλιπεν, ὡς καὶ αὐτοὶ οὗτοι ὁμολογήσουσιν· ὧν γίγνεται τοῦ μὲν ἀρχαίου κεφάλαιον τέτταρα τάλαντα καὶ πεντακισχίλιαι, τὸ δʼ ἔργον αὐτῶν πεντήκοντα μναῖ τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἑκάστου.
And these active assets he left, as even these men themselves will admit; the principal sum of which becomes four talents and five thousand drachmae, and their yield is fifty minae each year.
χωρὶς δὲ τούτων ἐλέφαντα μὲν καὶ σίδηρον, ὃν κατηργάζοντο, καὶ ξύλα κλίνειʼ εἰς ὀγδοήκοντα μνᾶς ἄξια, κηκῖδα δὲ καὶ χαλκὸν ἑβδομήκοντα μνῶν ἐωνημένα, ἔτι δʼ οἰκίαν τρισχιλίων, ἔπιπλα δὲ καὶ ἐκπώματα καὶ χρυσία καὶ ἱμάτια, τὸν κόσμον τῆς μητρός, ἄξια σύμπαντα ταῦτʼ εἰς μυρίας δραχμάς, ἀργυρίου δʼ ἔνδον ὀγδοήκοντα μνᾶς.
Apart from these, there was ivory and iron, which they used for manufacturing, and wood for beds, worth up to eighty minae; and gall-nuts and bronze purchased for seventy minae; furthermore, a house worth three thousand drachmae; and furniture, cups, gold jewelry, and clothing—the ornaments of my mother—all these worth up to ten thousand drachmae; and eighty minae of cash inside.
§11καὶ ταῦτα μὲν οἴκοι κατέλιπεν πάντα, ναυτικὰ δʼ ἑβδομήκοντα μνᾶς, ἔκδοσιν παρὰ Ξούθῳ, τετρακοσίας δὲ καὶ δισχιλίας ἐπὶ τῇ τραπέζῃ τῇ Πασίωνος, ἑξακοσίας δʼ ἐπὶ τῇ Πυλάδου, παρὰ Δημομέλει δὲ τῷ Δήμωνος υἱεῖ χιλίας καὶ ἑξακοσίας, κατὰ διακοσίας δὲ καὶ τριακοσίας ὁμοῦ τι τάλαντον διακεχρημένον.
And all these he left at home; and seventy minae in bottomry, lent to Xuthus; and two thousand four hundred drachmae on deposit at the bank of Pasion; and six hundred drachmae at Pylades' bank; and one thousand six hundred with Demomeles, the son of Demon; and lent out in small sums of two or three hundred drachmae, amounting to about a talent.
καὶ τούτων αὖ τῶν χρημάτων τὸ κεφάλαιον πλέον ἢ ὀκτὼ τάλαντα καὶ πεντήκοντα μναῖ γίγνονται.
And the sum of these latter properties becomes more than eight talents and fifty minae.
συμπάντων δʼ εἰς τέτταρα καὶ δέκα τάλανθʼ εὑρήσετε σκοποῦντες.
If you examine, you will find that the grand total amounts to fourteen talents.
§12καὶ τὸ μὲν πλῆθος τῆς οὐσίας τοῦτʼ ἦν τὸ καταλειφθέν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί.
And this, gentlemen of the jury, was the amount of the estate left.
ὅσα δʼ αὐτῆς διακέκλεπται καὶ ὅσʼ ἰδίᾳ ἕκαστος εἴληφεν καὶ ὁπόσα κοινῇ πάντες ἀποστεροῦσιν, οὐκ ἐνδέχεται πρὸς ταὐτὸ ὕδωρ εἰπεῖν, ἀλλʼ ἀνάγκη χωρὶς ἕκαστον διελεῖν ἐστίν.
But how much of it has been stolen, and how much each has taken privately, and how much they are depriving me of in common, it is not possible to speak within the same water-allowance, but it is necessary to divide and explain each separately.
ἃ μὲν οὖν Δημοφῶν ἢ Θηριππίδης ἔχουσι τῶν ἐμῶν, τότʼ ἐξαρκέσει περὶ αὐτῶν εἰπεῖν, ὅταν κατʼ αὐτῶν τὰς γραφὰς ἀπενέγκωμεν· ἃ δὲ τοῦτον ἔχοντʼ ἐξελέγχουσιν ἐκεῖνοι καὶ ἐγὼ οἶδʼ αὐτὸν εἰληφότα, περὶ τούτων ἤδη ποιήσομαι τοὺς λόγους πρὸς ὑμᾶς.
What Demophon or Therippides, then, possess of my property, it will suffice to speak about them at that time when we bring charges against them; but those things which those men prove that this defendant has, and which I know he has taken, about these I shall now make my address to you.
πρῶτον μὲν οὖν ὡς ἔχει τὴν προῖκα, τὰς ὀγδοήκοντα μνᾶς, τοῦθʼ ὑμῖν ἐπιδείξω, μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα καὶ περὶ τῶν ἄλλων, ὡς ἂν δύνωμαι διὰ βραχυτάτων.
First, then, I will demonstrate to you that he has the dowry, the eighty minae, and after this also about the other matters, as briefly as I can.
§13οὗτος γὰρ εὐθὺς μετὰ τὸν τοῦ πατρὸς θάνατον ᾤκει τὴν οἰκίαν εἰσελθὼν κατὰ τὴν ἐκείνου διαθήκην, καὶ λαμβάνει τά τε χρυσία τῆς μητρὸς καὶ τὰ ἐκπώματα τὰ καταλειφθέντα.
For this man, immediately after my father's death, entered and occupied the house according to his will, and took the mother's gold ornaments and the cups that had been left.
καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ὡς εἰς πεντήκοντα μνᾶς εἶχεν, ἔτι δὲ τῶν ἀνδραπόδων τῶν πιπρασκομένων παρά τε Θηριππίδου καὶ Δημοφῶντος τὰς τιμὰς ἐλάμβανεν, ἕως ἀνεπληρώσατο τὴν προῖκα, τὰς ὀγδοήκοντα μνᾶς.
And these things he held as worth about fifty minae, and furthermore, of the slaves sold by Therippides and Demophon, he received the proceeds, until he made up the full sum of the dowry, the eighty minae.
§14καὶ ἐπειδὴ εἶχεν, ἐκπλεῖν μέλλων εἰς Κέρκυραν τριήραρχος, ἀπέγραψε ταῦτα πρὸς Θηριππίδην ἔχονθʼ ἑαυτὸν καὶ ὡμολόγει κεκομίσθαι τὴν προῖκα.
And when he had them, being about to sail out to Corcyra as trierarch, he registered these things to Therippides as held by himself, and confessed that he had received the dowry.
καὶ πρῶτον μὲν τούτων Δημοφῶν καὶ Θηριππίδης, οἱ τούτου συνεπίτροποι, μάρτυρές εἰσιν· ἔτι δὲ καὶ ὡς αὐτὸς ὡμολόγει ταῦτʼ ἔχειν, Δημοχάρης θʼ ὁ Λευκονοεύς, ὁ τὴν τηθίδα τὴν ἐμὴν ἔχων, καὶ ἄλλοι πολλοὶ μάρτυρες γεγόνασιν.
And first, of these matters, Demophon and Therippides, his co-guardians, are witnesses; and furthermore, that he himself confessed that he had these things, both Demochares of Leuconoe, who is married to my aunt, and many other witnesses have come forward.
