§56θαρρεῖτε μὴ μᾶλλον διὰ τὴν πραότητα τὴν ἐμὴν ἢ διὰ τὴν ὑμετέραν αὐτῶν ἀρετήν.
Be of good courage, not because of my mildness, but because of your own virtue.
τὴν ἐμὴν ἀσφάλειαν ἄδειαν ὑμῖν αὐτοῖς εἶναι νομίζετε· καλῶς γὰρ τῶν περὶ ἐμὲ καθεστώτων τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ τὰ περὶ ὑμᾶς ἕξει.
Consider my safety to be security for yourselves; for if my affairs are well established, your affairs will be in the same condition.
ταπεινοὺς μὲν εἶναι χρὴ πρὸς τὴν ἀρχὴν τὴν ἐμήν, ἐμμένοντας τοῖς ἔθεσι καὶ διαφυλάττοντας τοὺς νόμους τοὺς βασιλικούς, λαμπροὺς δʼ ἐν ταῖς ὑπὲρ τῆς πόλεως λειτουργίαις καὶ τοῖς ἄλλοις τοῖς ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ προσταττομένοις. §57προτρέπετε τοὺς νεωτέρους ἐπʼ ἀρετὴν μὴ μόνον παραινοῦντες, ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ τὰς πράξεις ὑποδεικνύοντες αὐτοῖς οἵους εἶναι χρὴ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἀγαθούς.
You ought to be humble towards my rule, abiding by the customs and guarding the royal laws, but brilliant in the public services for the city and in the other things commanded by me. Encourage the younger men towards virtue, not only by advising them, but also by showing them in your actions what kind of men good men ought to be.
διδάσκετε τοὺς παῖδας τοὺς ὑμετέρους αὐτῶν πειθαρχεῖν, καὶ περὶ τὴν παίδευσιν τὴν εἰρημένην ἐθίζετʼ αὐτοὺς ὡς μάλιστα διατρίβειν· ἢν γὰρ καλῶς ἄρχεσθαι μάθωσι, πολλῶν ἄρχειν δυνήσονται, καὶ πιστοὶ μὲν ὄντες καὶ δίκαιοι μεθέξουσι τῶν ἡμετέρων ἀγαθῶν, κακοὶ δὲ γενόμενοι κινδυνεύσουσι περὶ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων. §58μέγιστον ἡγεῖσθε καὶ βεβαιότατον τοῖς παισὶ πλοῦτον παραδώσειν, ἢν αὐτοῖς δύνησθε τὴν ἡμετέραν εὔνοιαν καταλείπειν.
Teach your own children to be obedient, and accustom them to spend their time as much as possible in the aforementioned education; for if they learn to be ruled well, they will be able to rule over many, and being faithful and just, they will share in our goods, but becoming wicked, they will run a risk concerning what they already possess. Consider that you will hand down to your children the greatest and most secure wealth if you are able to leave them our goodwill.
ἀθλιωτάτους ἡγεῖσθε καὶ δυστυχεστάτους, ὅσοι περὶ τοὺς πιστεύοντας ἄπιστοι γεγόνασιν· ἀνάγκη γὰρ τοὺς τοιούτους ἀθύμως ἔχοντας καὶ φοβουμένους ἅπαντα καὶ μηδὲν μᾶλλον πιστεύοντας τοῖς φίλοις ἢ τοῖς ἐχθροῖς τὸν ἐπίλοιπον χρόνον διάγειν. §59ζηλοῦτε μὴ τοὺς πλεῖστα κεκτημένους, ἀλλὰ τοὺς μηδὲν κακὸν σφίσιν αὐτοῖς συνειδότας· μετὰ γὰρ τοιαύτης ψυχῆς ἥδιστʼ ἄν τις δύναιτο τὸν βίον διαγαγεῖν.
Consider those to be most miserable and unfortunate who have become unfaithful towards those who trust them; for it is inevitable that such men, being dispirited, fearing everything, and trusting their friends no more than their enemies, spend the remainder of their time. Do not envy those who possess the most, but those who are conscious of no evil in themselves; for with such a soul, one could spend one's life most pleasantly.
μὴ τὴν κακίαν οἴεσθε δύνασθαι μὲν πλείω τῆς ἀρετῆς ὠφελεῖν, τὸ δʼ ὄνομα δυσχερέστερον ἔχειν, ἀλλʼ οἵων περ ὀνομάτων ἕκαστον τῶν πραγμάτων τετύχηκε, τοιαύτας ἡγεῖσθε καὶ τὰς δυνάμεις αὐτῶν εἶναι. §60μὴ φθονεῖτε τοῖς παρʼ ἐμοὶ πρωτεύουσιν ἀλλʼ ἁμιλλᾶσθε, καὶ πειρᾶσθε χρηστοὺς ὑμᾶς αὐτοὺς παρέχοντες ἐξισοῦσθαι τοῖς προέχουσιν.
Do not think that wickedness can benefit more than virtue, and only has a more difficult name, but consider that the powers of things are of the same kind as the names each of them happens to have. Do not envy those who hold the first place with me, but emulate them, and try to make yourselves equal to those who excel by showing yourselves to be good.
φιλεῖν οἴεσθε δεῖν καὶ τιμᾶν οὕσπερ ἂν καὶ ὁ βασιλεύς, ἵνα καὶ παρʼ ἐμοῦ τυγχάνητε τῶν αὐτῶν τούτων.
Believe that you ought to love and honor those whom the king also does, so that you may obtain these same things from me.
οἷά περ παρόντος μου λέγετε, τοιαῦτα καὶ περὶ ἀπόντος φρονεῖτε. §61τὴν εὔνοιαν τὴν πρὸς ἡμᾶς ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις ἐνδείκνυσθε μᾶλλον ἢ ἐν τοῖς λόγοις.
What you say when I am present, think the same about me when I am absent. Show your goodwill towards us in your deeds rather than in your words.
ἃ πάσχοντες ὑφʼ ἑτέρων ὀργίζεσθε, ταῦτα τοὺς ἄλλους μὴ ποιεῖτε.
Do not do to others what you are angry at suffering from others.
περὶ ὧν ἂν ἐν τοῖς λόγοις κατηγορῆτε, μηδὲν τούτων ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις ἐπιτηδεύετε.
Practice none of those things in your deeds which you accuse in words.
τοιαῦτα προσδοκᾶτε πράξειν, οἷʼ ἂν περὶ ἡμῶν διανοῆσθε.
Expect to fare in such a manner as you think about us.
μὴ μόνον ἐπαινεῖτε τοὺς ἀγαθοὺς ἀλλὰ καὶ μιμεῖσθε. §62τοὺς λόγους τοὺς ἐμοὺς νόμους εἶναι νομίζοντες πειρᾶσθε τούτοις ἐμμένειν, εἰδότες ὅτι τοῖς μάλιστα ποιοῦσιν ὑμῶν ἁγὼ βούλομαι, τάχιστα τούτοις ἐξέσται ζῆν ὡς αὐτοὶ βούλονται.
Do not only praise good men, but also imitate them. Considering my words to be laws, try to abide by them, knowing that for those of you who especially do what I wish, it will be possible most quickly to live as they themselves wish.
κεφάλαιον δὲ τῶν εἰρημένων· οἵους περ τοὺς ὑφʼ ὑμῶν ἀρχομένους οἴεσθε δεῖν περὶ ὑμᾶς εἶναι, τοιούτους χρὴ καὶ περὶ τὴν ἀρχὴν τὴν ἐμὴν ὑμᾶς γίγνεσθαι. §63καὶ ταῦτʼ ἂν ποιῆτε, τί δεῖ περὶ τῶν συμβησομένων μακρολογεῖν;
To sum up what has been said: such as you think your subjects ought to be towards you, such you also ought to be towards my rule. And if you do this, what need is there to speak at length about what will happen?
ἢν γὰρ ἐγώ τε παρέχω τοιοῦτον ἐμαυτὸν οἷόν περ ἐν τῷ παρελθόντι χρόνῳ, καὶ τὰ παρʼ ὑμῶν ὑπηρετῆται, ταχέως ὄψεσθε καὶ τὸν βίον τὸν ὑμέτερον αὐτῶν ἐπιδεδωκότα καὶ τὴν ἀρχὴν τὴν ἐμὴν ηὐξημένην καὶ τὴν πόλιν εὐδαίμονα γεγενημένην. §64ἄξιον μὲν οὖν τηλικούτων ἀγαθῶν ἕνεκα μηδὲν ἐλλείπειν, ἀλλὰ καὶ πόνους καὶ κινδύνους οὑστινασοῦν ὑπενεγκεῖν· ὑμῖν δʼ ἔξεστι μηδὲν ταλαιπωρηθεῖσιν, ἀλλὰ πιστοῖς μόνον καὶ δικαίοις οὖσιν, ἅπαντα ταῦτα διαπράξασθαι.
For if I show myself to be such as I was in the past, and the services from your side are performed, you will quickly see both your own life improved, my rule increased, and the city become happy. It is therefore worthwhile, for the sake of such great goods, to fall short in nothing, but to undergo any troubles and dangers whatsoever; and it is possible for you, without suffering any hardship, but only being faithful and just, to accomplish all these things.
