But concerning the choregies, gymnastics-presidencies, and trierarchies here, I am ashamed to speak; for he so far surpassed others in all other respects that, while those who performed public services less generously than he praise themselves on these grounds, if anyone should demand gratitude for him even for services of such magnitude, he would seem to be speaking of trifles.
As for his attitude toward the state—for this too must not be passed over, just as he himself did not neglect it—he proved himself so much better toward the people than those who enjoyed the highest reputation, inasmuch as you will find that whereas the others engaged in factional strife for their own ends, he risked his life for you.
For he was not a democrat because he was excluded from the oligarchy, but because he was invited into it and yet preferred the democracy; and although it was often in his power not only to rule with a few others but even to have more power than those same associates, he refused, choosing rather to be wronged by the city than to betray the state.
And as long as you were continuously under a democracy, no one by speaking could have persuaded you of these things; but now the factions that have arisen have clearly shown who are the democrats, who the oligarchs, who desire neither, and who claim to share in both.
In these struggles he was twice banished by your enemies; and the first time, as soon as they had got him out of the way, they abolished the democracy; the second time, they had no sooner enslaved you than they condemned him, first of the citizens, to banishment.
So thoroughly did the city feel the impact of my father's misfortunes, and he share in the calamities of the city.
And yet many of the citizens were ill-disposed toward him, as though he were plotting to become tyrant, not judging from his actions, but thinking that while that position is envied by all, he of all men was most capable of achieving it.
Therefore, you might with justice feel all the more grateful to him, because, while he was the only citizen whose greatness made him worthy of this suspicion, he nevertheless believed that he ought to share the constitution on equal terms with the rest.
But because of the multitude of things that can be said on behalf of my father, I am at a loss as to what I should mention at present, and what of them I should omit; for it always seems to me that what has not yet been told is of greater importance than what has already been said to you.
Since I believe this also to be clear to everyone, that he must necessarily be most loyal to the fortunes of the city who has the largest share in both its blessings and its evils.
§40ἐκείνου τοίνυν εὖ μὲν πραττούσης τῆς πόλεως τίς εὐδαιμονέστερος ἢ θαυμαστότερος ἢ ζηλωτότερος ἦν τῶν πολιτῶν, δυστυχησάσης δὲ τίς ἐλπίδων μειζόνων ἢ χρημάτων πλειόνων ἢ δόξης καλλίονος ἐστερήθη;
Now, when the city was prosperous, who of the citizens was more fortunate, more admired, or more envied than he? And when it met with adversity, who was deprived of greater hopes, more wealth, or fairer reputation?
οὐ τὸ τελευταῖον ἐπειδὴ κατέστησαν οἱ τριάκονθʼ οἱ μὲν ἄλλοι τὴν πόλιν ἔφυγον, ἐκεῖνος δὲ ἐξ ἁπάσης τῆς Ἑλλάδος ἐξέπεσεν;
Finally, when the Thirty were established, did not the others flee the city, while he was banished from the whole of Greece?
οὐ Λακεδαιμόνιοι καὶ Λύσανδρος ὁμοίως ἔργον ἐποιήσαντʼ ἐκεῖνον ἀποκτεῖναι καὶ τὴν ὑμετέραν καταλῦσαι δύναμιν, οὐδεμίαν ἡγούμενοι πίστιν ἕξειν παρὰ τῆς πόλεως, εἰ τὰ τείχη καταβάλοιεν, εἰ μὴ καὶ τὸν ἀναστῆσαι δυνάμενον ἀπολέσαιεν;
Did not the Lacedaemonians and Lysander make it equally their task to slay him and to destroy your power, believing that they would have no security from the city, even if they demolished the walls, unless they also destroyed the man who was capable of rebuilding them?
So that not only from the benefits he conferred upon you, but also from the sufferings he endured because of you, it is easy to recognize his goodwill.
For he is seen to have aided the democracy, desiring the same constitution as you, suffering ill at the hands of the same enemies, sharing the misfortunes of the city, holding the same friends and enemies as you, and in every way risking his life, partly at your hands, and partly because of you,
