And as some say, this was found written: "Demosthenes to Antipater, greeting." And Philochorus says that he died by drinking poison, but Satyrus the historian says that the reed-pen had been poisoned, with which he began to write the letter, and tasting this he died.
Ἐρατοσθένης δʼ ἐκ πολλοῦ δεδοικότα Μακεδόνας περὶ τῷ βραχίονι κρίκον περικεῖσθαι πεφαρμαγμένον.
Eratosthenes says that, having long feared the Macedonians, he wore a poisoned ring around his arm.
εἰσὶ δʼ οἵ φασι συσχόντα αὐτὸν τὸ πνεῦμα ἀποθανεῖν· οἱ δʼ εἶπον τοῦ κατὰ τὴν σφραγῖδα φαρμάκου γευσάμενον.
There are some who say that he died by holding his breath; and others said that he died by tasting the poison on his signet ring.
ἐβίω δʼ ὡς μὲν οἱ τὰ πλείω λέγουσιν ἔτη ἑβδομήκοντα, ὡς δʼ οἱ τὰ ἐλάττω, ἑπτὰ καὶ ἑξήκοντα.
He lived, as those who say the most, seventy years; as those who say the least, sixty-seven.
ἐπολιτεύσατο δὲ δύο καὶ εἴκοσιν.
He was active in politics for twenty-two years.
ἡνίκα δὲ Φίλιππος ἐτεθνήκει, λαμπρὰν ἐσθῆτα προῆλθεν ἔχων, καίτοι τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτοῦ νεωστὶ τετελευτηκυίας, ἐφηδόμενος τῷ τοῦ Μακεδόνος θανάτῳ.
When Philip died, he went forth wearing splendid clothing, even though his daughter had recently died, rejoicing in the death of the Macedonian.
συνήργησε δὲ καὶ Θηβαίοις πρὸς Ἀλέξανδρον πολεμοῦσι καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους Ἕλληνας ἐπέρρωσεν ἀεί· διόπερ Θήβας κατασκάψας ἐξῄτει παρʼ Ἀθηναίων Ἀλέξανδρος αὐτόν, ἀπειλῶν, εἰ μὴ δοίησαν.
He also assisted the Thebans in their war against Alexander and always encouraged the other Greeks; therefore, having razed Thebes, Alexander demanded him from the Athenians, threatening them if they did not surrender him.
στρατευομένῳ δʼ αὐτῷ ἐπὶ Πέρσας καὶ αἰτοῦντι ναυτικὸν παρʼ Ἀθηναίων ἀντεῖπεν, ἄδηλον εἰπών, εἰ οὐ κατὰ τῶν παρασχόντων χρήσεται.
And when he was campaigning against the Persians and asking for a navy from the Athenians, Demosthenes spoke against it, saying it was unclear whether he would not use it against those who provided it.
κατέλιπε δὲ δύο παῖδας ἐκ μιᾶς γυναικὸς τῶν εὐδοκίμων, Ἡλιοδώρου τινὸς θυγατρός·
He left two sons from one wife of high repute, the daughter of a certain Heliodorus; and he had one daughter, who died before marriage while still a child.
θυγατέρα δὲ μίαν ἔσχεν, ἣ παῖς ἔτι οὖσα πρὸ γάμου ἐτελεύτησεν εἶχε δὲ καὶ ἀδελφήν, ἐξ ἧς καὶ Λάχου Λευκονοέως ἀδελφιδοῦς αὐτῷ Δημοχάρης ἐγένετο, ἀνὴρ καὶ κατὰ πόλεμον ἀγαθὸς καὶ κατὰ τοὺς πολιτικοὺς λόγους οὐδενὸς χείρων.
And he also had a sister, from whom and Laches of Leuconoe his nephew Demochares was born, a man both good in war and second to none in political speeches.
ἔστι δʼ αὐτοῦ εἰκὼν ἐν τῷ πρυτανείῳ εἰσιόντων πρὸς τὴν ἑστίαν ἐν δεξιᾷ ὁ πρῶτος περιεζωσμένος ἅμα τῷ ἱματίῳ καὶ ξίφος· οὕτω γὰρ· δημηγορῆσαι λέγεται, ἡνίκα Ἀντίπατρος ἐξῄτει τοὺς ῥήτορας.
There is a statue of him in the Prytaneum, on the right as one enters towards the hearth, the first one, wearing a sword girt together with his cloak; for he is said to have harangued the public in this way when Antipater demanded the orators.
χρόνῳ δʼ ὕστερον Ἀθηναῖοι σίτησὶν τʼ ἐν πρυτανείῳ τοῖς συγγενέσι τοῦ Δημοσθένους ἔδοσαν καὶ αὐτῷ τετελευτηκότι τὴν εἰκόνα ἀνέθεσαν ἐν ἀγορᾷ ἐπὶ Γοργίου ἄρχοντος, αἰτησαμένου αὐτῷ τὰς δωρεὰς τοῦ ἀδελφιδοῦ Δημοχάρους· ᾧ καὶ αὐτῷ πάλιν ὁ υἱὸς Λάχης·
At a later time, the Athenians gave food in the Prytaneum to the relatives of Demosthenes, and set up a statue to him, after his death, in the Agora under the archonship of Gorgias, his nephew Demochares having requested these honors for him; for whom in turn his son Laches, son of Demochares of Leuconoe, requested honors under the archonship of Pytharatus, ten years later, for the setting up of his statue in the Agora, and food in the Prytaneum for himself and always for the eldest of his descendants, and a seat of honor in all the games.

Δημοχάρους Λευκονοεὺς ᾐτήσατο δωρεὰς ἐπὶ Πυθαράτου ἄρχοντος, δεκάτῳ ὕστερον ἔτει, εἰς τὴν τῆς εἰκόνος στάσιν ἐν ἀγορᾷ καὶ σίτησιν ἐν πρυτανείῳ αὐτῷ τε καὶ ἐκγόνων ἀεὶ τῷ πρεσβυτάτῳ καὶ προεδρίαν ἐν ἅπασι τοῖς ἀγῶσι. καὶ ἔστι τὰ ψηφίσματα ὑπὲρ ἀμφοτέρων ἀναγεγραμμένα, ἡ δʼ εἰκὼν τοῦ Δημοχάρους εἰς τὸ πρυτανεῖον μετεκομίσθη, περὶ ἧς προείρηται.
And the decrees on behalf of both have been inscribed, and the statue of Demochares was relocated to the Prytaneum, about which has been spoken before.
φέρονται δʼ αὐτοῦ λόγοι γνήσιοι ἑξήκοντα πέντε.
Sixty-five genuine speeches of his are in circulation.
φασὶ δέ τινες καὶ ἀσώτως αὐτὸν βιῶναι, γυναικείαις τʼ ἐσθῆσι χρώμενον καὶ κωμάζοντα ἑκάστοτε, ὅθεν Βάταλον ἐπικληθῆναι· οἱ δʼ ὑποκοριστικῶς ἀπὸ τοῦ ὀνόματος τῆς τροφοῦ λέγουσιν αὐτὸν οὕτω λελοιδορῆσθαι.
And some say he also lived extravagantly, wearing women's clothing and reveling on each occasion, whence he was nicknamed Batalus; others say that he was abused thus as a pet name from the name of his nurse.
Διογένης δʼ ὁ κύων θεασάμενος αὐτὸν ποτʼ ἐν καπηλείῳ αἰσχυνόμενον καὶ ὑποχωροῦντα, εἶπεν

Diogenes the Dog, once seeing him in a tavern being ashamed and shrinking back, said: "The more you shrink back, the more you will be in the tavern." And he said, mocking him, that in his speeches he was a Scythian, but in battles a refined citizen.

And he also received gold from Ephialtes, one of the demagogues, who, having gone on an embassy to the King, returned secretly bringing money, so that by distributing it to the demagogues he might kindle the war against Philip; and they say that he privately received as a bribe from the King three thousand darics.
Ἀναξίλαν δέ τινα Ὠρείτην, ξένον αὐτοῦ γεγονότα, συλλαβὼν ἐβασάνιζεν ὡς κατάσκοπον, οὐδὲν δʼ ἐξειπόντα ἐψηφίσατο τοῖς ἕνδεκα παραδοῦναι.
Having arrested a certain Anaxilas of Oreus, who had been his guest-friend, he tortured him as a spy, and when he revealed nothing, he voted to hand him over to the Eleven.
λέγειν δέ ποτε κωλυόμενος ὑπʼ Ἀθηναίων ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ βραχὺ ἔφη βούλεσθαι πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰπεῖν, τῶν δὲ σιωπησάντων

And once being prevented from speaking by the Athenians in the assembly, he said he wanted to say a little to them, and when they fell silent, "A young man," he said, "in summer time hired an ass from the city to Megara; and at midday, when the sun was burning intensely, each of them wanted to shelter under the shadow; and they kept each other off, the one saying he had hired out the ass, not the shadow, and the other saying that having hired it, he had all authority." And having said this, he was going away.

And when the Athenians stopped him and begged him to put an end to the story, "Then you wish to hear about the shadow of an ass," he said, "but when I speak about serious matters, you do not wish to?" And once when Polus the actor said to him that having competed for two days he received a talent as pay, "And I," he said, "received five talents for keeping silent one day." And having had his voice fail in the assembly and being jeered, he said that it is necessary to judge actors by their voice, but orators by their judgment.
ὀνειδίσαντος δʼ αὐτὸν Ἐπικλέους ὅτι ἀεὶ σκέπτοιτο,
αἰσχυνοίμην γὰρ ἄν
εἶπεν
εἰ τηλικούτῳ δήμῳ συμβουλεύων αὐτοσχεδιάζοιμι
ἱστοροῦσι δʼ ὡς οὐδὲ λύχνον ἔσβεσεν, ἄχρι πεντήκοντα ἐτῶν ἐγένετο, διακριβῶν τοὺς λόγους.
And when Epicles reproached him because he always prepared, "For I should be ashamed," he said, "if advising so great a people I should speak offhand." And they record that he did not even put out his lamp, until he became fifty years old, elaborating his speeches.
αὐτὸς δέ φησιν ὑδροποσίᾳ χρήσασθαι.
And he himself says that he drank only water.
ἔγνω δʼ αὐτὸν καὶ Λυσίας ὁ ῥήτωρ καὶ Ἰσοκράτης εἶδε πολιτευόμενον ἄχρι τῆς ἐν Χαιρωνείᾳ μάχης, καί τινες τῶν Σωκρατικῶν φιλοσόφων.
And Lysias the orator knew him, and Isocrates saw him active in politics until the battle of Chaeronea, as did some of the Socratic philosophers.
τοὺς δὲ πλείστους λόγους εἶπεν αὐτοσχεδιάσας, εὖ πρὸς αὐτὸ πεφυκώς.
And he delivered most of his speeches offhand, being well-suited by nature for this.
πρῶτος δʼ ἔγραψε στεφανωθῆναι αὐτὸν χρυσῷ στεφάνῳ Ἀριστόνικος; Νικοφάνους Ἀναγυράσιος, ὑπωμόσατο δὲ Διώνδας.
Aristonicus, son of Nicophanes, of the deme Anagyras, was the first to propose that he be crowned with a golden crown, but Diondas opposed it under oath.
