For this reason Sertorius became famous in Iberia; and when he first returned to Rome, he was appointed quaestor of Cisalpine Gaul, at a crucial time.
For since the Marsic War was breaking out, and he was ordered to levy soldiers and make arms, he brought such zeal and speed to the task, in contrast to the sluggishness and effeminacy of the other young men, that he gained the reputation of a man who would live a life of active usefulness.
Yet he did not relax his military daring after he had advanced to the dignity of a commander, but, showing wonderful deeds of hand and exposing his body unsparingly to the struggles, he lost one of his eyes, which was knocked out.
And he continued to pride himself on this.
For he said that while other men do not always carry about the certificates of their achievements, but sometimes lay aside their necklaces, spears, and crowns, the marks of his valor remained with him, as he had the same persons as spectators of his virtue and of his misfortune.
The people also paid him fitting honor.
For when he entered the theater, they received him with applause and cheers, a distinction which it was not easy for even those far advanced in age and reputation to obtain.
However, when he sued for the tribuneship, he failed because Sylla formed a faction against him; for which reason he is also thought to have become a hater of Sylla.
When Marius, having been defeated by Sylla, fled, and Sylla departed to make war on Mithridates, and of the consuls Octavius remained adherent to the policy of Sylla, while Cinna, attempting a revolution, recalled the declining faction of Marius, Sertorius attached himself to Cinna, especially because he saw that Octavius was rather sluggish himself and distrustful of the friends of Marius.
When a great battle took place between the consuls in the forum, Octavius prevailed, and Cinna and Sertorius, after losing not much less than ten thousand men, fled; and winning over most of the military forces still scattered around Italy by persuasion, they quickly made themselves a match for the party of Octavius.
