§14.1οὐ μὴν ἀλλʼ οἱ Μακεδόνες ἀδείας μὲν οὔσης ἐφθείροντο πρὸς τοὺς διδόντας, καὶ τάς ἐκείνων θύρας ἐθεράπευον, δορυφορουμένων καὶ στρατηγιώντων·
Nevertheless, while there was impunity, the Macedonians were being corrupted by those who gave to them, and they courted their doors, while these kept bodyguards and affected the general.
ἐπεὶ δὲ Ἀντίγονος αὑτοῖς παρεστρατοπέδευσε μετὰ πολλῆς δυνάμεως καὶ τὰ πράγματα φωνὴν ἀφιέντα τὸν ἀληθινὸν ἐκάλει στρατηγόν, οὐ μόνον οἱ στρατευόμενοι τῷ Εὐμενεῖ προσεῖχον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ἐν εἰρήνῃ καὶ τρυφῇ μεγάλων ἐκείνων ἕκαστος ἐνέδωκε καὶ παρεῖχεν ἑαυτὸν σιωπῇ τὴν δοθεῖσαν φυλάττοντα τάξιν.
But when Antigonus encamped near them with a large force, and the situation, sending forth a voice, called for the true general, not only did the soldiers pay attention to Eumenes, but also each of those great men who had lived in peace and luxury gave in and submitted themselves, keeping the post assigned to them in silence.
§14.2καὶ γάρ τοι περὶ τὸν Πασιτίγριν ποταμὸν ἐπιχειρήσαντα διαβαίνειν τὸν Ἀντίγονον οἱ μὲν ἄλλοι παραφυλάττοντες οὐδὲ ᾔσθοντο, μόνος δὲ Εὐμενὴς ὑπέστη, καὶ συνάψας μάχην πολλοὺς μὲν κατέβαλε καὶ νεκρῶν ἐνέπλησε τὸ ῥεῖθρον, ἔλαβε δὲ τετρακισχιλίους αἰχμαλώτους, μάλιστα δὲ οἱ Μακεδόνες περὶ τὴν συμβᾶσαν ἀρρωστίαν αὐτῷ καταφανεῖς ἐγένοντο τοὺς μὲν ἄλλους ἑστιᾶν λαμπρῶς καὶ πανηγυρίζειν, ἄρχειν δὲ καὶ πολεμεῖν δυνατὸν ἡγούμενοι μόνον ἐκεῖνον.
And indeed, when Antigonus attempted to cross the Pasitigris river, the others, though on watch, did not even notice, but Eumenes alone opposed him, and joining battle, slew many, filled the stream with dead bodies, and took four thousand prisoners. But most of all, during the illness that befell him, the Macedonians made it clear that they thought the others were fit only to feast them splendidly and hold festivals, but that he alone was capable of commanding and waging war.
§14.3ὁ μὲν γὰρ Πευκέστας ἐν τῇ Περσίδι λαμπρῶς αὐτοὺς ἑστιάσας καὶ κατʼ ἄνδρα διαδοὺς ἱερεῖον εἰς θυσίαν ἤλπιζεν εἶναι μέγιστος· ὀλίγαις δὲ ὕστερον ἡμέραις τῶν στρατιωτῶν ἐπὶ τοὺς πολεμίους βαδιζόντων, ἐτύγχανεν ὁ Εὐμενὴς ἐκ νόσου τινὸς ἐπισφαλοῦς ἐν φορείῳ κομιζόμενος ἔξω τοῦ στρατεύματος ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ διὰ τάς ἀγρυπνίας.
For Peucestas, having feasted them splendidly in Persis and distributed to each man a victim for sacrifice, hoped to be the greatest man; but a few days later, when the soldiers were marching against the enemy, it happened that Eumenes, because of a dangerous illness, was being carried in a litter outside the army in a quiet place on account of his sleeplessness.
μικρὸν δὲ προελθοῦσιν αὐτοῖς ἄφνω λόφους τινὰς ὑπερβάλλοντες ἐξεφάνησαν οἱ πολέμιοι, καταβαίνοντες εἰς τὸ πεδίον.
When they had advanced a little way, suddenly the enemy appeared crossing over some hills and descending into the plain.
§14.4ὡς οὖν αἵ τε τῶν χρυσῶν ὅπλων αὐγαὶ πρὸς τὸν ἥλιον ἐξέλαμψαν ἀπὸ τῶν ἄκρων τοῦ ἀγήματος ἐν τάξει πορευομένων, καὶ τῶν θηρίων τοὺς πύργους ἄνω καὶ τάς πορφύρας εἶδον, ὅσπερ ἦν αὐτοῖς κόσμος εἰς μάχην ἀγομένοις, ἐπιστήσαντες οἱ πρῶτοι τὴν πορείαν ἐβόων Εὐμενῆ καλεῖν αὑτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ ἂν προελθεῖν ἐκείνου μὴ στρατηγοῦντος, καὶ τὰ ὅπλα πρὸς τὴν γῆν ἐρείσαντες ἀλλήλοις μένειν διεκελεύοντο, καὶ τοῖς ἡγεμόσιν ἡσυχίαν ἔχειν, καὶ χωρὶς Εὐμενοῦς μὴ μάχεσθαι μηδὲ κινδυνεύειν πρὸς τοὺς πολεμίους.
When, therefore, the gleam of the golden armor flashed in the sun from the vanguard of the elite troop marching in order, and they saw the towers on the beasts and the purple trappings, which was their array when going into battle, those in the front stopped their march and cried out to call Eumenes for themselves, for they would not advance unless he was commanding. And leaning their weapons against the ground, they exhorted one another to stay, and told their leaders to remain quiet, and not to fight or risk a battle with the enemy without Eumenes.
§14.5ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Εὐμενὴς ἧκε πρὸς αὐτοὺς δρόμῳ τοὺς κομίζοντας ἐπιταχύνας, καὶ τοῦ φορείου τάς ἑκατέρωθεν αὐλαίας ἀνακαλύψας προὔτεινε τὴν δεξιὰν γεγηθώς.
When Eumenes heard this, he came to them in haste, urging on his bearers, and drawing aside the curtains on both sides of the litter, he joyfully stretched out his right hand.
οἱ δὲ ὡς εἶδον, εὐθὺς ἀσπασάμενοι Μακεδονιστὶ τῇ φωνῇ τάς τε ἀσπίδας ἀνείλοντο καὶ ταῖς σαρίσαις ἐπιδουπήσαντες ἠλάλαξαν, προκαλούμενοι τοὺς πολεμίους ὠς τοῦ ἡγεμόνος αὐτοῖς παρόντος.
When they saw him, they immediately greeted him in the Macedonian tongue, lifted up their shields, and clashing them with their sarissas, raised a war cry, challenging the enemy as if their commander were present with them.
