Valerius' Lineage and the Expulsion of the Kings

Passage 1 of 23 · Greek

Summary

Explains the lineage of Publicola (Valerius), compared here to Solon, and his actions during the expulsion of the Roman kings and the transition to the republic, including how he missed being elected as the first co-consul.

To Solon, who had become such a man, we compare Publicola, for whom the Roman people later devised this name as an honor, whereas before that he was called Publius Valerius, being regarded as a descendant of that ancient Valerius who had been most responsible for making the Romans and Sabines one people instead of enemies.
ὁ γὰρ μάλιστα τοὺς βασιλεῖς εἰς ταὐτὸ πείσας συνελθεῖν καὶ διαλλάξας ἐκεῖνός ἐστι.
For he was the one who especially persuaded the kings to meet together and reconciled them.
The Valerius related to him by birth, as they say, while Rome was still ruled by kings, was distinguished for his eloquence and wealth, of which he always used the former rightly and with frankness on behalf of justice, and with the latter generously and benevolently relieved those in need, so that it was immediately clear that, if a democracy should come to be, he would be the foremost man.
But since the people hated and were burdened by Tarquinius Superbus, who had obtained his office not honorably but impiously and unlawfully, and who used it not kingly but insolently and tyrannically, the suffering of Lucretia, who ended her own life because of the violence done to her, gave the signal for revolt. And Lucius Brutus, taking charge of affairs, came first to Valerius and, using him as his most zealous helper, joined in expelling the kings.
§1.4μέχρι μὲν ἐπίδοξος ἦν ὁ δῆμος ἕνα χειροτονήσειν ἀντὶ τοῦ βασιλέως στρατηγόν, ἡσυχίαν ἦγεν ὁ Οὐαλλέριος, ὡς τῷ Βρούτῳ μᾶλλον ἄρχειν προσῆκον ἡγεμόνι τῆς ἐλευθερίας γεγενημένῳ·
As long as it was expected that the people would elect one general instead of the king, Valerius kept quiet, thinking it more appropriate for Brutus to rule, since he had become the leader of freedom.
δυσχεραινομένου δὲ τοῦ τῆς μοναρχίας ὀνόματος, καὶ δοκοῦντος ἂν ἀλυπότερον τοῦ δήμου μερισθεῖσαν ὑπομεῖναι τὴν ἀρχήν καὶ δύο προβαλλομένου καὶ καλοῦντος, ἐλπίζων μετὰ τὸν Βροῦτον αἱρεθήσεσθαι καὶ συνυπατεύσειν διήμαρτεν.
But when the name of monarchy became obnoxious, and it seemed that the people would bear the rule with less pain if it were divided, and they proposed and called for two, he hoped that he would be chosen after Brutus and share the consulship, but he was disappointed.
For Tarquinius Collatinus, the husband of Lucretia, was chosen as colleague instead of Valerius, against the will of Brutus; he was in no way superior in virtue to Valerius, but the influential men, fearing the kings who were still making many attempts from the outside and trying to soften the city, wished to have as general their most intense enemy, as one who would not yield.

Notes

  1. §1.1τῶν παλαιῶν ἀνδρὸς αἰτιωτάτου γενομένου — τῶν παλαιῶν is a genitive plural meaning 'of the ancients.' The subsequent phrase beginning with ἀνδρὸς is in apposition with the preceding genitive Οὐαλλέριου. The whole phrase means 'of Valerius, one of the ancient men, who had been most responsible for...'
  2. §1.2ὧν τῷ μὲν ... ἀφʼ οὗ δὲ ... — The relative pronoun ὧν refers back to the antecedents λόγον καὶ πλοῦτον (eloquence and wealth). τῷ μὲν is a neuter dative singular (referring to λόγος) serving as the object of the participle χρώμενος (using). On the other hand, ἀφ' οὗ δὲ refers to πλοῦτος, indicating the source or means ('from which') and modifying the participle ἐπαρκῶν (relieving/assisting).
  3. §1.2δῆλος ἦν εὐθύς ... πρωτεύσων — A personal construction where the adjective δῆλος is combined with the future participle πρωτεύσων (who would be foremost). It translates literally as 'he was immediately clear as being about to be foremost,' equivalent to an impersonal construction 'it was immediately clear that he would be foremost.'
  4. §1.4ὡς τῷ Βρούτῳ μᾶλλον ἄρχειν προσῆκον — An accusative absolute construction consisting of the conjunction ὡς (introducing a subjective reason) followed by προσῆκον, the neuter accusative participle of the impersonal verb προσήκει (it is fitting).
  5. §1.4δοκοῦντος ἂν ἀλυπότερον τοῦ δήμου μερισθεῖσαν ὑπομεῖναι τὴν ἀρχήν — A genitive absolute construction δοκοῦντος ... τοῦ δήμου. The particle ἂν is attached to the infinitive ὑπομεῖναι, imparting a potential or hypothetical nuance equivalent to ἂν ὑπομείνειε ('that the people would bear...').
