Thucydides · History of the Peloponnesian War §4.15.1-4.15.2

Spartan Response to Defeat and Decision for an Armistice

Passage 380 of 917 · Greek

Summary

Upon receiving the news of the defeat at Pylos, the Spartan authorities decide to send officials to the site, establish an armistice, and dispatch ambassadors to Athens to negotiate peace.

§4.15.1ἐς δὲ τὴν Σπάρτην ὡς ἠγγέλθη τὰ γεγενημένα περὶ Πύλον, ἔδοξεν αὐτοῖς ὡς ἐπὶ ξυμφορᾷ μεγάλῃ τὰ τέλη καταβάντας ἐς τὸ στρατόπεδον βουλεύειν παραχρῆμα ὁρῶντας ὅτι ἂν δοκῇ.
When the news of what had happened at Pylos reached Sparta, they resolved, as if in the face of a great disaster, that the magistrates should go down in person to the camp and, seeing the situation for themselves, decide on the spot whatever seemed best.
And when they saw that it was impossible to bring aid to their men, and did not wish to risk their either suffering some fate from hunger or being overpowered by numbers and taken prisoners, they resolved to make an armistice at Pylos, if the Athenian generals were willing, and to send ambassadors to Athens to negotiate an agreement, and to try to recover their men as quickly as possible.

Notes

  1. §4.15.1τὰ τέλη καταβάντας ... ὁρῶντας — The participles καταβάντας and ὁρῶντας are in the masculine plural accusative, despite agreeing in sense with the neuter plural noun τὰ τέλη ('the magistrates/authorities'). This is a construction according to sense (ad sensum), as the abstract noun refers to concrete male individuals.
  2. §4.15.2κινδυνεύειν ... ἢ ὑπὸ λιμοῦ τι παθεῖν αὐτοὺς ἢ ὑπὸ πλήθους βιασθέντας κρατηθῆναι — The verb κινδυνεύειν ('to run a risk', 'to be in danger of') here governs the two infinitive clauses introduced by ἢ... ἢ... (ἢ... παθεῖν and ἢ... κρατηθῆναι). αὐτούς serves as the subject accusative of παθεῖν, while βιασθέντας is the accusative participle agreeing with the subject of the passive infinitive κρατηθῆναι.
