§2.81.1Ἀκαρνᾶνες δὲ αἰσθόμενοι κατά τε γῆν πολλὴν στρατιὰν ἐσβεβληκυῖαν ἔκ τε θαλάσσης ναυσὶν ἅμα τοὺς πολεμίους παρεσομένους, οὔτε ξυνεβοήθουν ἐφύλασσόν τε τὰ αὑτῶν ἕκαστοι, παρά τε Φορμίωνα ἔπεμπον κελεύοντες ἀμύνειν·
The Acarnanians, perceiving that a large army had invaded by land and that at the same time the enemy were about to arrive by sea with a fleet, did not join forces to help one another but each guarded their own territory, and sent messengers to Phormio, urging him to bring assistance.
ὁ δὲ ἀδύνατος ἔφη εἶναι ναυτικοῦ ἐκ Κορίνθου μέλλοντος ἐκπλεῖν Ναύπακτον ἐρήμην ἀπολιπεῖν.
But he replied that it was impossible for him to leave Naupactus undefended when a fleet was about to sail out from Corinth.
§2.81.2οἱ δὲ Πελοποννήσιοι καὶ οἱ ξύμμαχοι τρία τέλη ποιήσαντες σφῶν αὐτῶν ἐχώρουν πρὸς τὴν τῶν Στρατίων πόλιν, ὅπως ἐγγὺς στρατοπεδευσάμενοι, εἰ μὴ λόγοις πείθοιεν, ἔργῳ πειρῷντο τοῦ τείχους.
The Peloponnesians and their allies, dividing themselves into three divisions, advanced toward the city of Stratos, in order that, having encamped nearby, if they could not persuade them by words, they might try to assault the wall by force.
§2.81.3καὶ μέσον μὲν ἔχοντες προσῇσαν Χάονες καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι βάρβαροι, ἐκ δεξιᾶς δ’ αὐτῶν Λευκάδιοι καὶ Ἀνακτόριοι καὶ οἱ μετὰ τούτων, ἐν ἀριστερᾷ δὲ Κνῆμος καὶ οἱ Πελοποννήσιοι καὶ Ἀμπρακιῶται·
And advancing in the center were the Chaonians and the other barbarians, and on their right were the Leucadians, Anactorians, and those with them, and on the left, Cnemus, the Peloponnesians, and the Ambraciots.
διεῖχον δὲ πολὺ ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων καὶ ἔστιν ὅτε οὐδὲ ἑωρῶντο.
They were at a great distance from one another, and sometimes could not even see each other.
§2.81.4καὶ οἱ μὲν Ἕλληνες τεταγμένοι τε προσῇσαν καὶ διὰ φυλακῆς ἔχοντες, ἕως ἐστρατοπεδεύσαντο ἐν ἐπιτηδείῳ· οἱ δὲ Χάονες σφίσι τε αὐτοῖς πιστεύοντες καὶ ἀξιούμενοι ὑπὸ τῶν ἐκείνῃ ἠπειρωτῶν μαχιμώτατοι εἶναι οὔτε ἐπέσχον τὸ στρατόπεδον καταλαβεῖν, χωρήσαντές τε ῥύμῃ μετὰ τῶν ἄλλων βαρβάρων ἐνόμισαν αὐτοβοεὶ ἂν τὴν πόλιν ἑλεῖν καὶ αὑτῶν τὸ ἔργον γενέσθαι.
The Greeks advanced in order and keeping on their guard, until they encamped in a suitable place; but the Chaonians, trusting in themselves and being reputed by the inhabitants of that continent to be the most warlike, did not halt to occupy a camp, but rushing forward impetuously with the other barbarians, they thought they would take the city at the first shout and that the achievement would be theirs alone.
§2.81.5γνόντες δ’ αὐτοὺς οἱ Στράτιοι ἔτι προσιόντας καὶ ἡγησάμενοι, μεμονωμένων εἰ κρατήσειαν, οὐκ ἂν ἔτι σφίσι τοὺς Ἕλληνας ὁμοίως προσελθεῖν, προλοχίζουσι δὴ τὰ περὶ τὴν πόλιν ἐνέδραις, καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἐγγὺς ἦσαν, ἔκ τε τῆς πόλεως ὁμόσε χωρήσαντες καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἐνεδρῶν προσπίπτουσιν.
The Stratians, perceiving them still advancing and thinking that if they could overcome them while isolated, the Greeks would no longer advance against them in the same manner, laid ambushes beforehand around the city, and when they were near, they charged out from the city to meet them hand to hand and fell upon them from the ambushes.
§2.81.6καὶ ἐς φόβον καταστάντων διαφθείρονταί τε πολλοὶ τῶν Χαόνων, καὶ οἱ ἄλλοι βάρβαροι ὡς εἶδον αὐτοὺς ἐνδόντας, οὐκέτι ὑπέμειναν, ἀλλ’ ἐς φυγὴν κατέστησαν.
And the Chaonians being thrown into a panic, many of them were destroyed, and when the other barbarians saw them giving way, they no longer stood their ground but turned to flight.
§2.81.7τῶν δὲ Ἑλληνικῶν στρατοπέδων οὐδέτερον ᾔσθετο τῆς μάχης διὰ τὸ πολὺ προελθεῖν αὐτοὺς καὶ στρατόπεδον οἰηθῆναι καταληψομένους ἐπείγεσθαι.
Neither of the Greek armies was aware of the battle, because the barbarians had gone far ahead and were thought to be hastening forward to occupy a camp.
§2.81.8ἐπεὶ δ’ ἐνέκειντο φεύγοντες οἱ βάρβαροι, ἀνελάμβανόν τε αὐτοὺς καὶ ξυναγαγόντες τὰ στρατόπεδα ἡσύχαζον αὐτοῦ τὴν ἡμέραν, ἐς χεῖρας μὲν οὐκ ἰόντων σφίσι τῶν Στρατίων διὰ τὸ μήπω τοὺς ἄλλους Ἀκαρνᾶνας ξυμβεβοηθηκέναι, ἄπωθεν δὲ σφενδονώντων καὶ ἐς ἀπορίαν καθιστάντων· οὐ γὰρ ἦν ἄνευ ὅπλων κινηθῆναι.
But when the fleeing barbarians rushed in upon them, they received them, and having united their camps, remained quiet there for the rest of the day, while the Stratians did not come to close quarters with them because the other Acarnanians had not yet come to their aid, but slinging stones at them from a distance and throwing them into distress; for it was impossible to move without armor.
δοκοῦσι δὲ οἱ Ἀκαρνᾶνες κράτιστοι εἶναι τοῦτο ποιεῖν.
And the Acarnanians are considered to be most excellent at doing this.
