§2.80.1τοῦ δ’ αὐτοῦ θέρους, οὐ πολλῷ ὕστερον τούτων, Ἀμπρακιῶται καὶ Χάονες βουλόμενοι Ἀκαρνανίαν τὴν πᾶσαν καταστρέψασθαι καὶ Ἀθηναίων ἀποστῆσαι πείθουσι Λακεδαιμονίους ναυτικόν τε παρασκευάσασθαι ἐκ τῆς ξυμμαχίδος καὶ ὁπλίτας χιλίους πέμψαι ἐπ’ Ἀκαρνανίαν, λέγοντες ὅτι, ἢν ναυσὶ καὶ πεζῷ ἅμα μετὰ σφῶν ἔλθωσιν, ἀδυνάτων ὄντων ξυμβοηθεῖν τῶν ἀπὸ θαλάσσης Ἀκαρνάνων ῥᾳδίως Ἀκαρνανίαν σχόντες καὶ τῆς Ζακύνθου καὶ Κεφαλληνίας κρατήσουσι, καὶ ὁ περίπλους οὐκέτι ἔσοιτο Ἀθηναίοις ὁμοίως περὶ Πελοπόννησον· ἐλπίδα δ’ εἶναι καὶ Ναύπακτον λαβεῖν.
During the same summer, not long after this, the Ambraciots and Chaonians, wishing to subjugate the whole of Acarnania and detach it from the Athenians, persuaded the Lacedaemonians to prepare a fleet from their alliance and to send a thousand hoplites to Acarnania. They argued that if they came with a fleet and land force together with them, as the Acarnanians on the coast would be unable to bring assistance, they would easily capture Acarnania and master Zacynthus and Cephallenia, and the Athenians would no longer be able to circumnavigate the Peloponnese in the same manner; and there was also hope, they said, of taking Naupactus.
§2.80.2οἱ δὲ Λακεδαιμόνιοι πεισθέντες Κνῆμον μὲν ναύαρχον ἔτι ὄντα καὶ τοὺς ὁπλίτας ἐπὶ ναυσὶν ὀλίγαις εὐθὺς πέμπουσι, τῷ δὲ ναυτικῷ περιήγγειλαν παρασκευασαμένῳ ὡς τάχιστα πλεῖν ἐς Λευκάδα.
The Lacedaemonians, being persuaded, immediately sent Cnemus, who was still admiral, and the hoplites on a few ships, and ordered the fleet, as soon as it was ready, to sail with all speed to Leucas.
§2.80.3ἦσαν δὲ Κορίνθιοι ξυμπροθυμούμενοι μάλιστα τοῖς Ἀμπρακιώταις ἀποίκοις οὖσιν.
The Corinthians were especially zealous in co-operating, as the Ambraciots were their colonists.
καὶ τὸ μὲν ναυτικὸν ἔκ τε Κορίνθου καὶ Σικυῶνος καὶ τῶν ταύτῃ χωρίων ἐν παρασκευῇ ἦν, τὸ δ᾽ ἐκ Λευκάδος καὶ Ἀνακτορίου καὶ Ἀμπρακίας πρότερον ἀφικόμενον ἐν Λευκάδι περιέμενεν.
And while the fleet from Corinth, Sicyon, and the neighboring places was in preparation, that from Leucas, Anactorium, and Ambracia had already arrived and was waiting at Leucas.
§2.80.4Κνῆμος δὲ καὶ οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ χίλιοι ὁπλῖται ἐπειδὴ ἐπεραιώθησαν λαθόντες Φορμίωνα, ὃς ἦρχε τῶν εἴκοσι νεῶν τῶν Ἀττικῶν αἳ περὶ Ναύπακτον ἐφρούρουν, εὐθὺς παρεσκευάζοντο τὴν κατὰ γῆν στρατείαν.
Cnemus and the thousand hoplites with him, having crossed over without being noticed by Phormio, who commanded the twenty Athenian ships on guard around Naupactus, immediately prepared for the land expedition.
§2.80.5καὶ αὐτῷ παρῆσαν Ἑλλήνων μὲν Ἀμπρακιῶται καὶ Λευκάδιοι καὶ Ἀνακτόριοι καὶ οὓς αὐτὸς ἔχων ἦλθε χίλιοι Πελοποννησίων, βάρβαροι δὲ Χάονες χίλιοι ἀβασίλευτοι, ὧν ἡγοῦντο ἐπετησίῳ προστατείᾳ ἐκ τοῦ ἀρχικοῦ γένους Φώτιος καὶ Νικάνωρ.
There were present with him, of the Greeks, the Ambraciots, Leucadians, Anactorians, and the thousand Peloponnesians whom he had brought with him; and of the barbarians, a thousand Chaonians, who had no king, led by Photius and Nicanor, who belonged to the ruling family and held the yearly presidency.
ξυνεστρατεύοντο δὲ μετὰ Χαόνων καὶ Θεσπρωτοὶ ἀβασίλευτοι.
With the Chaonians, the Thesprotians, who also had no king, joined the expedition.
§2.80.6Μολοσσοὺς δὲ ἦγε καὶ Ἀτιντᾶνας Σαβύλινθος ἐπίτροπος ὢν Θάρυπος τοῦ βασιλέως ἔτι παιδὸς ὄντος, καὶ Παραυαίους Ὄροιδος βασιλεύων.
The Molossians and Atintanians were led by Sabylinthus, the guardian of King Tharyps who was still a child; and the Parauaeans were led by Oroedus, their king.
Ὀρέσται δὲ χίλιοι, ὧν ἐβασίλευεν Ἀντίοχος, μετὰ Παραυαίων ξυνεστρατεύοντο Ὀροίδῳ Ἀντιόχου ἐπιτρέψαντος.
A thousand Orestians, over whom Antiochus was king, joined the expedition with the Parauaeans, Antiochus having entrusted them to Oroedus.
§2.80.7ἔπεμψε δὲ καὶ Περδίκκας κρύφα τῶν Ἀθηναίων χιλίους Μακεδόνων, οἳ ὕστερον ἦλθον.
Perdiccas also secretly sent a thousand Macedonians without the knowledge of the Athenians, but they arrived too late.
§2.80.8τούτῳ τῷ στρατῷ ἐπορεύετο Κνῆμος οὐ περιμείνας τὸ ἀπὸ Κορίνθου ναυτικόν, καὶ διὰ τῆς Ἀργείας ἰόντες Λιμναίαν, κώμην ἀτείχιστον, ἐπόρθησαν.
With this army Cnemus marched, without waiting for the fleet from Corinth; and passing through the territory of Argolis, they ravaged Limnaea, an unfortified village.
ἀφικνοῦνταί τε ἐπὶ Στράτον, πόλιν μεγίστην τῆς Ἀκαρνανίας, νομίζοντες, εἰ ταύτην πρώτην λάβοιεν, ῥᾳδίως σφίσι τἆλλα προσχωρήσειν.
They then arrived before Stratos, the largest city of Acarnania, thinking that if they could take this first, the rest would easily surrender to them.
