§subject_1INTRODUCTION. THE Hecyra takes its name from the fact that its plot turns upon the misunderstanding between a mother and daughter-in-law.
導入。 『義母（ヘキュラ）』という題名は、そのプロットが姑と嫁の間の誤解を中心に展開するという事実に由来している。
Colman has translated the word ‘step-mother; ’ but ἑκυρά is etymologically, and in meaning, the same word as ‘socrus,’ a mother-in-law; and there is the same close connexion between the correlative words νυός and ‘nurus,’ a daughter-in-law.
コールマンはこの語を「継母」と翻訳したが、ἑκυρά は語源的にも意味の上でも、義母（姑）を意味する「socrus」と同じ語であり、また、これに対応する相関語である νυός と、義理の娘（嫁）を意味する「nurus」との間にも同様の密接な結びつきがある。
The story of the play is as follows: A young man named Pamphilus, son of Laches and Sostrata, used to keep company with one Bacchis.
物語のあらすじは以下の通りである。 ラケースとソーストラタの息子であるパムピルスという若者は、かつてバッキスという女性と交際していた。
One night as he was going to her house, rather the worse for wine, he met Philumena, the daughter of Phidippus and Myrrhina, on the road, and offered her violence, both of them being ignorant who the other was.
ある夜、彼が少し酒に酔って彼女の家に向かう途中、道でピーディップスとミュルリナの娘ピルーメナに出会い、彼女に乱暴を働いた。
She could not get any thing from him which could serve as a clue to his recognition;
二人は互いが誰であるかを知らなかった。
but he in the struggle managed to tear from her finger a ring, which he carried to Bacchis and gave to her.
彼女は彼から、その身元を特定する手がかりとなるようなものを何も得ることができなかったが、彼は争いの中で彼女の指から指輪を奪い取ることに成功し、それをバッキスのもとに持ち帰って彼女に与えた。
A short time after this he was married;
この後しばらくして彼は結婚した。
for his father was very anxious to break off his intimacy with Bacchis, and to see his son quietly settled down, that he might have some prospect of domestic comfort in his old age; and he never let his son have any peace till he consented to take to himself a wife.
というのも、彼の父親がバッキスとの親しい関係を断ち切らせ、息子を落ち着かせて、老後に家庭的な慰めの見通しを持てるようにすることを強く切望しており、息子が妻を迎えることに同意するまで、決して息子を休ませなかったからである。
By a strange coincidence the wife selected for him was this very Philumena, whom he had met at night on his way to his mistress’s house;
奇妙な偶然の一致により、彼のために選ばれた妻は、かつて夜に愛人の家に向かう途中で出会った、まさにあのピルーメナであった。
and her mother was only too glad to have her married, hoping that she would be saved from public disgrace.
彼女の母親は、娘が公の恥を免れることを望んで、彼女が結婚することをこの上なく喜んでいた。
But things did not turn out as smoothly as she expected;
しかし、物事は彼女が期待したほど円滑には運ばなかった。
for Pamphilus did not at first shake off his old love, but continued to visit Bacchis every day, and totally avoided the company of his wife.
パムピルスは最初、古い愛を断ち切ることができず、毎日バッキスを訪ね続け、妻と一緒に過ごすことを完全に避けていたからである。
Gradually, however, a change took place.
しかし、次第に変化が生じた。
Bacchis, being annoyed at the marriage of Pamphilus, behaved with great coldness and caprice towards him.
バッキスは、パムピルスの結婚にへそを曲げ、彼に対して非常に冷淡で気まぐれに振る舞うようになった。
Philumena, on the other hand, bore his neglect with the greatest patience and good temper.
他方、ピルーメナは、彼の無視を最大の忍耐と気立ての良さで耐え忍んだ。
And so it came about that Pamphilus abandoned Bacchis altogether, and became devotedly attached to his wife.
こうして、パムピルスはバッキスを完全に捨て、妻に献身的に惹かれるようになった。
At this moment a relation of his father’s dies at Imbros, and Pamphilus is despatched to the spot to look after his property, his wife being left with her mother-in-law Sostrata.
この時、父親の親戚の一人がインブロス島で亡くなり、パムピルスは財産を整理するために現地へ派遣され、妻は姑のソーストラタのもとに残された。
But this arrangement does not last long.
しかし、この取り決めは長くは続かなかった。
Philumena, finding that she has no hope of concealing her situation from her mother-in-law, begins to avoid her, and to withdraw from her company as much as possible;
ピルーメナは、姑から自分の状況を隠す望みがないことを知り、彼女を避け始め、できる限りその付き合いから身を引くようになった。
till, at last, she goes to her own mother on the pretence of attending a family sacrifice, and stays with her, refusing to return to her mother-in-law.
ついには、家族の犠牲式に参列するという口実で実母のところへ行き、そのまま留まり、姑のもとへ戻ることを拒否した。
Sostrata sends for her, but in vain;
ソーストラタは彼女を呼びにやったが、無駄であった。
and she goes to see her, but is refused admittance.
自ら会いに行ったが、面会を拒絶された。
