§subject_1INTRODUCTION. THE Hecyra takes its name from the fact that its plot turns upon the misunderstanding between a mother and daughter-in-law.
소개. 《시어머니(헤큐라)》라는 제목은 그 줄거리가 시어머니와 며느리 사이의 오해를 둘러싸고 전개된다는 사실에서 유래했다.
Colman has translated the word ‘step-mother; ’ but ἑκυρά is etymologically, and in meaning, the same word as ‘socrus,’ a mother-in-law; and there is the same close connexion between the correlative words νυός and ‘nurus,’ a daughter-in-law.
콜먼은 이 단어를 '계모'로 번역했으나, ἑκυρά는 어원적으로나 의미상으로 시어머니를 뜻하는 'socrus'와 같은 단어이며, 상관어인 νυός와 며느리를 뜻하는 'nurus' 사이에도 이와 똑같이 밀접한 연관성이 존재한다.
The story of the play is as follows: A young man named Pamphilus, son of Laches and Sostrata, used to keep company with one Bacchis.
이 극의 줄거리는 다음과 같다. 라케스와 소스트라타의 아들인 팜필루스라는 청년은 박키스라는 여성과 사귀고 있었다.
One night as he was going to her house, rather the worse for wine, he met Philumena, the daughter of Phidippus and Myrrhina, on the road, and offered her violence, both of them being ignorant who the other was.
어느 날 밤, 그가 술에 다소 취한 채 그녀의 집으로 가던 중, 길에서 피디푸스와 미르리나의 딸 필루메나를 만나 그녀에게 폭력을 행사했는데, 두 사람 모두 상대방이 누구인지 모르는 상태였다.
She could not get any thing from him which could serve as a clue to his recognition; but he in the struggle managed to tear from her finger a ring, which he carried to Bacchis and gave to her.
그녀는 그에게서 그의 신원을 파악할 수 있는 단서가 될 만한 것을 아무것도 얻지 못했으나, 그는 몸싸움 중에 그녀의 손가락에서 반지를 빼앗는 데 성공하여 그것을 박키스에게 가져가 주었다.
A short time after this he was married;

for his father was very anxious to break off his intimacy with Bacchis, and to see his son quietly settled down, that he might have some prospect of domestic comfort in his old age; and he never let his son have any peace till he consented to take to himself a wife.

By a strange coincidence the wife selected for him was this very Philumena, whom he had met at night on his way to his mistress’s house;

and her mother was only too glad to have her married, hoping that she would be saved from public disgrace.
그녀의 어머니는 딸이 대중적인 수치심을 면하기를 바라며 그녀가 결혼하는 것을 너무나 기뻐했다.
But things did not turn out as smoothly as she expected;
그러나 일은 그녀가 기대했던 것처럼 순탄하게 풀리지 않았다.
for Pamphilus did not at first shake off his old love, but continued to visit Bacchis every day, and totally avoided the company of his wife.
팜필루스가 처음에는 옛 사랑을 떨쳐내지 못하고 매일 박키스를 계속 방문하며 아내와의 동석을 완전히 피했기 때문이다.
Gradually, however, a change took place.
그러나 점차 변화가 일어났다.
Bacchis, being annoyed at the marriage of Pamphilus, behaved with great coldness and caprice towards him.
박키스는 팜필루스의 결혼에 화가 나 그에게 매우 냉담하고 변덕스럽게 굴었다.
Philumena, on the other hand, bore his neglect with the greatest patience and good temper.
반면에 필루메나는 그의 방치를 극도의 인내와 온화한 성품으로 견뎌냈다.
And so it came about that Pamphilus abandoned Bacchis altogether, and became devotedly attached to his wife.
그리하여 팜필루스는 박키스를 완전히 버리고 아내에게 헌신하게 되었다.
At this moment a relation of his father’s dies at Imbros, and Pamphilus is despatched to the spot to look after his property, his wife being left with her mother-in-law Sostrata.
바로 이때 그의 아버지의 한 친척이 임브로스 섬에서 사망하고, 팜필루스는 그의 재산을 돌보기 위해 그곳으로 파견되며, 그의 아내는 시어머니 소스트라타와 함께 남겨진다.
But this arrangement does not last long.
그러나 이 조치는 오래가지 않았다.
Philumena, finding that she has no hope of concealing her situation from her mother-in-law, begins to avoid her, and to withdraw from her company as much as possible;
필루메나는 시어머니에게 자신의 처지(임신)를 숨길 가망이 없음을 알고 그녀를 피하기 시작하고 가능한 한 그녀와의 자리를 피하려 했다.
till, at last, she goes to her own mother on the pretence of attending a family sacrifice, and stays with her, refusing to return to her mother-in-law.
마침내 그녀는 가족 제사에 참석한다는 핑계로 친정어머니에게 가서 그곳에 머물며 시어머니에게 돌아가기를 거부했다.
Sostrata sends for her, but in vain; and she goes to see her, but is refused admittance.
소스트라타는 그녀를 부르러 사람을 보냈으나 소용없었고, 그녀를 만나러 직접 찾아갔으나 출입을 거부당했다。
