§35Sednobis, fratres dilectissimi, praeter horas antiquitus obseruatas orandi nunc et spatia et sacramenta creuerunt.
But for us, most beloved brethren, besides the hours anciently observed, both the spaces and the sacraments of praying have now increased.
For we must also pray in the morning, so that the resurrection of the Lord may be celebrated by a morning prayer.
This the Holy Spirit anciently pointed out in the Psalms, saying: "My King and my God, because to Thee I will pray, O Lord, in the morning: and Thou shalt hear my voice; in the morning I will stand by Thee and will see Thee." And again through the prophet the Lord speaks: "At dawn they will watch for Me, saying: 'Come, and let us return to the Lord our God.'" Likewise, as the sun withdraws and the day ceases, we must of necessity pray again.
For since Christ is the true sun and the true day, when the sun and the day of the world withdraw, when we pray and ask that the light may come upon us anew, we pray for the coming of Christ, which will afford the grace of eternal light.
Christum autem diem dictum declarat in psalmis Spiritus sanctus. lapis, inquit, quem reprobauerunt aedificantes hic factus est in caput anguli.
Moreover, the Holy Spirit declares in the Psalms that Christ is called "day." "The stone," He says, "which the builders rejected, this is become the head of the corner.
This is done by the Lord, and it is wonderful in our eyes.
This is the day which the Lord hath made: let us rejoice and be glad in it." Likewise, that He was called "sun," the prophet Malachi testifies, saying: "But unto you that fear the name of the Lord shall the sun of righteousness arise, and healing is in his wings." Wherefore, if in the holy Scriptures the true sun and the true day is Christ, no hour is excepted for Christians, by which God should not be worshipped frequently and always; so that we who are in Christ, that is, in the true sun and in the true day, may insist on prayers throughout the whole day and pray; and when, running by the law of the world, the night returned in alternating turns succeeds, there can be no loss to those who pray from the nocturnal darkness, because to the children of light there is day even in the nights.
For when is he without light who has light in his heart? Or when has he not the sun and the day, to whom Christ is the sun and the day?
But we who are always in Christ, that is, in the light, let us not cease from prayer even in the nights.
Thus Anna the widow without ceasing, always praying and watching, persevered in meriting God's favor, as it is written in the Gospel: "She departed not from the temple, serving with fastings and prayers night and day." Let the Gentiles, who are not yet illuminated, or the Jews, who, deserted by the light, have remained in darkness, look to themselves; but let us, most beloved brethren, who are always in the light of the Lord, who remember and hold what we have begun to be by the grace received, reckon night as day.
ambulare nos credamus semper in lumine, non impediamur a tenebris quas euasimus, nulla sint horis nocturnis precum damna, nulla orationum pigra et ignaua dispendia.
Let us believe that we always walk in the light; let us not be hindered by the darkness which we have escaped; let there be no loss of prayers in the night hours, no lazy and sluggish waste of petitions.
Recreated spiritually and reborn by God's indulgence, let us imitate what we are to be: destined to have only day in the kingdom without the intervention of night, let us so watch in the night as if in the light; as those who are to pray always and give thanks to God, let us not cease to pray and give thanks here also.
