For this reason also the Holy Spirit came in the form of a dove: it is a simple and cheerful animal, not bitter with gall, not fierce with bites, not violent with the tearing of claws, loving human dwellings, knowing the association of one house, bringing forth their young together when they breed, cohering with one another in their flights when they travel, passing their life in common intercourse, acknowledging the concord of peace by the kiss of the beak, fulfilling the law of unanimity in all things.
This is the simplicity to be recognized in the church, this is the charity to be maintained, so that the love of the brotherhood may imitate the doves, and gentleness and mildness may be equaled to lambs and sheep.
What is the ferocity of wolves and the madness of dogs doing in a Christian breast, and the lethal poison of serpents, and the bloody cruelty of beasts? We must congratulate when such are separated from the church, lest they prey upon the doves, upon the sheep of Christ, with their cruel and poisonous contagion.
Bitterness cannot cohere and be joined with sweetness, darkness with light, rain with serenity, fight with peace, sterility with fruitfulness, dryness with springs, tempest with tranquility.
nemo existimet bonos de ecclesia posse discedere: triticum non rapit uentus nec arborem solida radice fundatam procella subuertit: inanes paleae tempestate iactantur, inualidae arbores turbinis incursione uertuntur.
Let no one think that the good can depart from the church: the wind does not carry away the wheat, nor does the storm overturn the tree established with a solid root; the empty chaff is tossed by the tempest, the weak trees are overturned by the onset of the whirlwind.
These the apostle John execrates and strikes, saying: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us." Hence heresies both have frequently been made and are being made, while the perverse mind has no peace, while discordant faithlessness does not maintain unity.
fieri uero haec Dominus permittit et patitur manente propriae libertatis arbitrio, ut dum corda et mentes nostras ueritatis discrimen examinat, probatorum fides integra manifesta luce clarescat.
But the Lord permits and suffers these things to be done, while the choice of one's own liberty remains, so that while the trial of truth examines our hearts and minds, the intact faith of those approved may shine forth with manifest light.
Through the apostle the Holy Spirit forewarns and says: "There must also be heresies, so that those who are approved may become manifest among you." Thus the faithful are proved, thus the faithless are detected, thus also before the day of judgment, here too already the souls of the righteous and the unrighteous are divided, and the chaff is separated from the wheat.
hinc sunt qui se ultro aput temerarios conuenas sine diuina dispositione praeficiunt, qui se praepositos sine ulla ordinationis lege constituunt, qui nemine episcopatum dante episcopi sibi nomen adsumunt: quos designat in psalmis Spiritus sanctus sedentes in pestilentiae cathedra, pestes et lues fidei, serpentis ore fallentes et corrumpendae ueritatis artifices, uenena letalia linguis pestiferis euomentes: quorum sermo ut cancer serpit, quorum tractatus pectoribus et cordibus singulorum mortale uirus infundit.
Hence are those who, of their own accord, set themselves over rash assemblies without divine disposition, who establish themselves as leaders without any law of ordination, who assume the name of bishop for themselves when no one gives them the episcopate; whom the Holy Spirit designates in the Psalms as sitting in the chair of pestilence, plagues and ruins of the faith, deceiving with the mouth of a serpent and artfulness of corrupting truth, vomiting lethal poisons from pestilential tongues, whose speech creeps like a cancer, whose discourse infuses mortal virus into the breasts and hearts of individuals.
§11Contra eiusmodi clamat Dominus, ab his refrenat et reuocat errantem plebem suam dicens: nolite audire sermones pseudoprophetarum, quoniam uisiones cordis eorum frustrantur eos.
Against such the Lord cries out, from these He restrains and recalls His erring people, saying: "Do not listen to the words of the false prophets, because the visions of their hearts deceive them.
locuntur sed non ab ore Domini.
They speak, but not from the mouth of the Lord.
They say to those who cast away the word of God: 'Peace shall be to you,' and to all who walk in their own wills, everyone who walks in the error of his own heart, 'Evil shall not come upon you.' I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
If they had stood in my substance and had heard my words, and if they had taught my people, I would have turned them from their evil thoughts." These same ones the Lord again designates and denotes, saying: "They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have dug for themselves broken cisterns which cannot hold water." Although there cannot be another baptism except the one, they think they baptize: having deserted the fountain of life, they promise the grace of living and saving water.
People are not washed there, but rather are defiled; nor are sins purged, but indeed are accumulated.
That birth generates sons not for God, but for the devil.
Born through a lie, they do not receive the promises of truth; procreated from faithlessness, they lose the grace of faith.
They cannot come to the reward of peace who have broken the peace of the Lord with the madness of discord.
