Even if such people are killed in the confession of the name, that stain is not washed away even by blood: the inexpiable and heavy guilt of discord is not purged even by suffering.
He cannot be a martyr who is not in the church; he will not be able to arrive at the kingdom who has abandoned her who is to reign.
Christ gave us peace, He commanded us to be concordant and unanimous, He enjoined the covenants of love and charity to be corruptless and inviolate: he cannot exhibit himself as a martyr who has not held brotherly love.
The apostle Paul teaches this and protests, saying: "And if I should have faith so that I could remove mountains, but have not charity, I am nothing; and if I should distribute all my goods for food, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, but have not charity, I profit nothing.
Charity is magnanimous, charity is kind, charity envies not, is not puffed up, is not provoked, does not act wrongly, thinks no evil, loves all things, believes all things, hopes all things, bears all things.
caritas numquam excidet. numquam, inquit, excidet caritas. haec enim semper in regno erit, haec in aeternum fraternitatis sibi cohaerentis unitate durabit.
Charity shall never fail." "Charity," he says, "shall never fail." For this will always be in the kingdom, this will endure forever in the unity of a brotherhood clinging to itself.
Discord cannot arrive at the kingdom of heaven; and he will not be able to belong to the reward of Christ—who said: "This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you"—who has violated the love of Christ by faithless dissension.
qui caritatem non habet Deum non habet.
He who has not charity has not God.
It is the voice of the blessed apostle John: "God," he says, "is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him." They cannot abide with God who have been unwilling to be unanimous in the church of God.
Although they may burn, handed over to flames and fires, or lay down their lives cast to wild beasts, that will not be the crown of faith but the punishment of faithlessness, nor the glorious end of religious virtue but the destruction of despair.
occidi talis potest, coronari non potest.
Such a person can be killed, he cannot be crowned.
Thus he professes himself to be a christian, just as the devil also often falsely claims to be Christ, with the Lord Himself forewarning and saying: "Many will come in my name, saying: I am Christ, and they will deceive many." Just as he is not Christ, although he deceives in the name, so neither can he be seen as a christian who does not abide in His gospel and in the truth of the faith.
For even to prophesy and to cast out devils and to do great miracles on earth is indeed a sublime and admirable thing, yet not everyone who is found in all these things obtains the heavenly kingdom, unless he walks in the observance of a right and just way.
The Lord denounces and says: "Many will say to me on that day: Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name and cast out devils in your name and done great miracles in your name? And then I will say to them: I never knew you, depart from me, you who work iniquity." There is need of justice, so that one may be able to deserve well of God the judge: His commandments and warnings must be obeyed, so that our merits may receive a reward.
When the Lord in the gospel was directing the way of our hope and faith with a shortening summary, He said: "The Lord your God is one Lord," and: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength." "This is the first, and the second is like unto it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." He taught at the same time both unity and love by His teaching; He included all the prophets and the law in two commandments.
But what unity does he preserve, what love does he guard or think of, who, mad with the fury of discord, tears the church, destroys the faith, disturbs the peace, dissipates charity, profanes the sacrament?
