§12Sciebant et Iudaei Christum esse uenturum: nam hic illis semper prophetis monentibus adnuntiabatur.
The Jews also knew that Christ was to come; for He was always announced to them by the warning of the prophets.
sed significato duplici eius aduentu, uno qui exercitio et exemplo hominis fungeretur, altero qui Deum fateretur, non intellegendo primum aduentum, quod in passione praecessit occultus, unum tantum credunt qui erit in potestate manifestus.
But although His coming was indicated in a double aspect, one which should perform the service and example of a man, the other which should confess Him as God, because they did not understand His first coming, which preceded in secret in His passion, they believe in only one coming which will be manifest in power.
quod autem hoc Iudaeorum populus intellegere non potuit, delictorum meritum fuit: sic erant sapientiae et intellegentiae caecitate multati, ut qui uita indigni essent, haberent uitam ante oculos nec uiderent.
But that the people of the Jews could not understand this was the desert of their sins; they were so punished with the blindness of wisdom and understanding that, as those who were unworthy of life, they had life before their eyes and did not see it.
§13Itaque cum Christns lesus secundum a prophetis ante praedicta uerbo et uocis imperio daemonia de hominibus excuteret, paralyticos restringeret, leprosos purgaret, inluminaret caecos, clodis gressum daret, mortuos rursus animaret, cogeret sibi elementa famulari, seruire uentos, maria oboedire, inferos cedere, Iudaei, qui illum crediderant hominem tantum de humilitate carnis et corporis, existimabant magum de licentia potestatis.
Therefore, when Christ Jesus, according to what had been predicted before by the prophets, by His word and the command of His voice, cast out demons from men, restored the paralytic, cleansed the lepers, enlightened the blind, gave power to walk to the lame, animated the dead again, compelled the elements to serve Him, the winds to obey, the seas to be subject, the underworld to yield, the Jews, who had believed Him to be only a man from the humility of His flesh and body, thought Him a magician from the liberty of His power.
hinc magistri eorum adque primores, hoc est quos et doctrina ille et sapientia reuincebat, accensa ira et indignatione prouocati, ut postremo detentum Pontio Pilato, qui tunc ex parte Romana Syriam procurabat, traderent, crucem eius et mortem suffragiis [uiolentis ac pertinacibus flagitarent.
Hence their teachers and chiefs, that is, those whom He convinced by both His doctrine and wisdom, provoked and kindled with anger and indignation, came to the point that they delivered Him, after He was arrested, to Pontius Pilate, who then governed Syria on behalf of the Romans, and demanded His cross and death with violent and persistent clamors.
§14Hoc facturos et ipse praedixerat et prophetarum omnium testimonium sic ante praecesserat, oportere illum pati, non ut sentiret mortem sed ut uinceret, et cum passus esset, ad superos denuo regredi, ut uim diuinae maiestatis ostenderet.
That they would do this, He Himself had also predicted, and the testimony of all the prophets had so preceded beforehand, that He must suffer, not that He might feel death but that He might conquer it, and when He had suffered, He should return again to the world above, that He might show the power of His divine majesty.
fidem itaque rerum cursus inpleuit.
Therefore, the course of events fulfilled the truth of these things.
nam et crucifixus praeuento carnificis officio spiritum sponte dimisit et die tertio rursus a mortuis sponte surrexit.
For even when crucified, anticipating the office of the executioner, He yielded up His spirit voluntarily, and on the third day rose again voluntarily from the dead.
apparuit discipulis suis talis ut fuerat, agnoscendum se uidentibus praebuit simul iunctis et substantiae corporalis firmitate conspicuus ad dies quadraginta remoratus est, ut de eo ad praecepta uitalia instrui possent et discerent, quae docerent.
He appeared to His disciples as He had been, offered Himself to be recognized by those who saw Him, joined together, and being conspicuous by the firmness of His bodily substance, He remained for forty days, so that they could be instructed by Him in the precepts of life, and learn what they should teach.
tunc in caelum circumfusa nube sublatus est, ut hominem, quem dilexit, quem induit, quem a morte protexit, ad patrem uictor inponeret, iam uenturus e caelo ad poenam diaboli et ad censuram generis humani ultoris uigore et iudicis potestate: per orbem uero discipuli magistro et Deo monente diffusi praecepta in salutem dare, ab errore tenebrarum ad uiam lucis adducere, caecos et ignaros ad agnitionem ueritatis oculare.
Then He was taken up into heaven, a cloud being poured around Him, so that as a conqueror He might present to the Father the man whom He loved, whom He put on, whom He protected from death, He who is now about to come from heaven for the punishment of the devil and for the judgment of the human race with the vigor of an avenger and the power of a judge. But the disciples, dispersed throughout the world at the warning of their master and God, gave precepts for salvation, led men from the error of darkness to the way of light, and gave eyes to the blind and ignorant for the acknowledgment of the truth.
§15Ac ne esset probatio minus solida et de Christo delicata confessio, per tormenta, per cruces, per multa poenarum genera temptantur.
And lest the proof should be less solid and the confession of Christ should be easy, they are tried through torments, through crosses, through many kinds of punishments.
dolor, qui ueritatis testis est, admonetur, ut Christus Dei filius, qui hominibus ad uitam datus creditur, non tantum praeconio uocis sed et passionis testimonio praedicaretur.
Pain, which is the witness of truth, is summoned, so that Christ the Son of God, who is believed to be given to men for life, might be preached not only by the heraldry of the voice but also by the testimony of His passion.
hunc igitur comitamur, hunc sequimur, hunc habemus itineris ducem, lucis principem, salutis auctorem, caelum pariter et patrem quaerentibus et credentibus pollicentem.
Him therefore we accompany, Him we follow, Him we have as the leader of our journey, the prince of light, the author of salvation, promising heaven and the Father alike to those who seek and believe.
quod est Christus, erimus [christiani], si Christum fuerimus secuti.
What Christ is, we shall be, if we shall have followed Christ.
