§5Et certe uideamus quid habes.
And certainly let us see what you have.
\'habeo,\' inquis, \'sacramentum, habeo baptismum*. si dicam tibi \'proba\', ostendis mihi quid acceperis, dicis quid confessus fueris, dicis quid teneas.
"I have," you say, "the sacrament, I have baptism." If I should say to you "prove it," you show me what you received, you say what you confessed, you say what you hold.
I acknowledge it, I do not change it, I do not blow upon it; far be it that, while I seek the salvation of the deserter, I should do injury to the emperor.
ergo probasti mihi quod habeas sacramentum; exponendo sacramentum probasti mihi te habere fidem.
Therefore you have proved to me that you have the sacrament; by explaining the sacrament you have proved to me that you have faith.
proba mihi quod habeas caritatem: tene unitatem.
Prove to me that you have charity: hold unity.
nolo mihi dicas \'habeo caritatem\': proba.
I do not want you to say to me "I have charity": prove it.
unum patrem habemus: simul oremus.
We have one father: let us pray together.
quid tu dicis, quando oras, rogo te? \'pater noster qui es in caelis. \' deo gratias.
What do you say when you pray, I ask you? "Our Father who art in heaven." Thanks be to God.
secundum magisterium domini nostri addidisti: qui es in caelis. singulos enim patres habebamus in terris, unum inuenimus simul in caelis.
According to the teaching of our Lord you have added: "who art in heaven." For we had individual fathers on earth, but we have found one together in heaven.
pater noster qui es in caelis: ipsum inuocas patrem.
"Our Father who art in heaven": you invoke that Father himself.
pater noster unam coniugem habere uoluit.
Our Father wished to have one wife.
Therefore, we who worship one Father, why do we not acknowledge one mother? If you say that you were born of another, then she bore you from a foreign womb.
quod dixi, non omnes intellegere potuistis.
What I have said, not all of you were able to understand.
We know that through lawful wives it was brought about that even those who were not born of lawful wives were associated in the same inheritance.
hoc uoluntas coniugis fecit.
The will of the wife did this.
nam Ismahel exheredatus est.
For Ishmael was disinherited.
ipsum Sara pepererat, etsi de utero alieno.
Sarah had borne him, although from a foreign womb.
Sara pepererat utero alieno, uoto suo.
Sarah had borne him through a foreign womb, by her own wish.
For she herself said: "For I wish that you make children for me from that woman," and therefore Abraham did so.
For the wife does not have power over her own body, but the husband; likewise the husband does not have power over his own body, but the wife.
For he would have been a son, if he had not been proud; proud Ishmael was disinherited.
For the handmaid raised her neck, so that it was said: "Cast out the handmaid and her son; for the son of the handmaid shall not be heir with my son Isaac." For do you wish to know what peace is worth, what concord is worth, what humility is worth, and what pride hinders? He disinherited Ishmael, but as for the sons of the handmaids of Jacob, because they too wished for just marriages for their birth, we know that the sons of the handmaids of Jacob were called into one inheritance.
simul numerati sunt omnes patriarchae duodecim; nullum ab altero uteri diuersitas separauit, quia omnes caritas sociauit.
All the twelve patriarchs were numbered together; the diversity of the womb separated none from the other, because charity united them all.
quid interest ergo ubi baptismum acceperis? baptismus meus est, dicit tibi Sara, baptismus meus est, dicit tibi Rachel.
What difference does it make then where you received baptism? "The baptism is mine," Sarah says to you, "the baptism is mine," Rachel says to you.
Do not be proud, come to the inheritance, especially since the inheritance itself is not that land which was given to the sons of Jacob.
Land was given to the sons of Israel; the more people possessed it, the more it was narrowed.
hereditas nostra pax uocatur; testamentum lego: pacem meam do uobis, pacem meam relinquo uobis. simul teneamus quod diuidi non potest.
Our inheritance is called peace; I read the testament: "My peace I give to you, my peace I leave to you." Let us hold together what cannot be divided.
A numerous possessor does not narrow it, however many may come, just as it was promised: "Thus shall your seed be as the stars of heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore." "In your seed shall all nations be blessed." "And I saw," it says in the Apocalypse, "many in white robes and holding palms, whom no one can number, coming from all nations." Let them come, let them hold peace.
angusta non fit nostra possessio; angustias non facit nisi sola dissensio.
Our possession does not become narrow; nothing makes narrowness except dissension alone.
Behold, my brothers, that we still suffer narrowness, the dissension of our brother is the cause: let him agree in peace, and broadness is made.
But what should we do, except bear fraternal weakness and not fail? We believe that this sweat of mine will be fruitful.
Our Lord God, who willed that we should come to you, who ordered that we should seek him, who made it so that we have found him in the meantime face to face, will make us, helped by your prayers, find his heart, rejoice in his concord, and give thanks to God for his salvation, which he cannot have except in the Catholic Church.
extra catholicam ecclesiam totum potest praeter salutem: potest habere honorem, potest habere sacramenta, potest cantare alleluia, potest respondere \'amen\', potest euangelium tenere, potest in nomine patris et filii et spiritus sancti fidem habere et praedicare, sed nusquam nisi in ecclesia catholica salutem poterit inuenire.
Outside the Catholic Church he can have everything except salvation: he can have honor, he can have sacraments, he can sing alleluia, he can answer "amen," he can hold the Gospel, he can have and preach faith in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, but nowhere except in the Catholic Church will he be able to find salvation.
transeunt enim omnia ista, fratres mei.
For all these things pass away, my brothers.
Now he thinks that he will be great among his people, if he does not agree and should be called a martyr of the party of Donatus.
Far be it! Let this pride be taken away from his heart in the name of the Lord.
He himself also knows, he himself also reads: "If I should deliver my body to be burned, but have not charity, it profits me nothing." I do not say: if he boasts of having suffered some injuries for the party of Donatus or some earthly losses, it profits him nothing.
I say more: if he should suffer outside from an enemy of Christ, not his Catholic brother seeking his salvation, but if he should suffer outside from an enemy of Christ, and the enemy of Christ should say to him outside the church of Christ: "Place incense to the idols, worship my gods," and he, not worshiping, should be killed by the enemy of Christ, he can shed blood, but he cannot receive the crown.
