Ἐκκαλεῖσθαι μὲν πῶς ἄν τις κωλύοιτο ὑπὸ τῶν δικαζόντων, οὐχ ὁρῶ, ὁπότε ἔξεστιν τὴν ἑτέραν ὁδὸν τρεπόμενον ταὐτὸ ποιεῖν καὶ θᾶττον πρὸς με ἀφικνεῖσθαι.
How anyone could be prevented from appealing by those who judge, I do not see, since it is permitted, by turning to the other path, to do the same and to arrive at me more quickly.
ὕβρει δὲ καὶ βίᾳ χρῆσθαι πρὸς τοὺς ἐκκαλουμένους καὶ φρουρὰν στρατιωτικὴν περιιστᾶν καὶ ἁπλῶς εἰπεῖν ἀποφράττειν αὐτοῖς τὴν δεῦρο ἄνοδον ἀπαγορεύομεν τοῖς ἐπιτρόποις καὶ τοῖς ἡγουμένοις τῶν ἐθνῶν.
But to use outrage and force against those who appeal, and to surround them with a military guard, and, simply to speak, to block their ascent hither, we forbid to the procurators and to the governors of the provinces.
καὶ πεισθήσονται ταύτῃ μου τῇ προρρήσει, εἰδότες ὅτι τοσοῦτόν μοι μέλει τῆς τῶν ἀρχομένων ἐλευθερίας, ὅσον καὶ τῆς εὐνοίας αὐτῶν καὶ πειθοῦς.
And they will obey this my warning, knowing that I care as much for the liberty of the subjects as for their goodwill and obedience.
