[PAULUS, from his eighteenth book of Opinions.] Sempronius attempted to raise a question of status against Thetis, as if she were born from his female slave.
qui iam testato conuentus a Procula nutrice Thetidis in soluendis alimentis respondit non se habere, unde alimenta eiusdem exsoluat, sed debere eam patri suo restituere Lucio Titio: idque ex illa in testationem redegisset, ut postea nullam quaestionem pateretur ab eodem Sempronio, Lucius Titius Seiae Proculae solutis alimentis puellam uindicta manumisit: quaero, an possit rescindi libertas Thetidis.
Having already been summoned in a documented manner by Procula, the nurse of Thetis, for the payment of maintenance, he replied that he did not have the means to pay her maintenance, but that she ought to be restored to his father Lucius Titius. And since Lucius Titius had reduced this matter to a written deposition from her so that he would not suffer any lawsuit from the same Sempronius thereafter, Lucius Titius, after paying the maintenance to Seia Procula, manumitted the girl by the rod. I ask whether the freedom of Thetis can be rescinded.
Paulus respondit, quoniam dominus ancillae, ex qua Thetis nata est, Thetidem pro derelicto habuisse uidetur, potuisse eam a Lucio Titio ad libertatem perduci.
Paulus replied that, since the owner of the slave woman from whom Thetis was born is deemed to have held Thetis as abandoned, she could be brought to freedom by Lucius Titius.
