] §38.10.10.18Septimo gradu personae continentur mille uiginti quattuor hae: tritaui itemque tritauiae pater mater: personas efficiunt centum uiginti octo: tritaui enim patres tot sunt quot ipsius tritaui, item eiusdem matres totidem, fiunt sexaginta quattuor: idem numerus tritauiae patris matrisque.
In the seventh degree, one thousand twenty-four persons are contained, as follows: the father and mother of a tritavus, and likewise of a tritavia: they make one hundred twenty-eight persons; for there are as many fathers of a tritavus as there are tritavi themselves, and likewise just as many mothers of the same, which makes sixty-four; and the same number applies to the father and mother of a tritavia.
ataui atauiae frater sororue: hi sunt tritaui filius filia, abaui abauiaeue patruus auunculus amita matertera, proaui proauiae patruus magnus auunculus magnus amita magna matertera magna, aui auiaeue propatruus proauunculus proamita promatertera, patris uel matris abpatruus abauunculus abamita abmatertera: fiunt personae ataui fratris triginta duo: nam sedecim, quas atauus explet, accedunt totidem propter fratris duplicem personam: necesse est nam sedecim fratres ataui ex patre computentur, sedecim ex matre.
The brother or sister of an atavus or atavia: these are the son or daughter of a tritavus, the paternal uncle, maternal uncle, paternal aunt, or maternal aunt of an abavus or abavia, the paternal great-uncle, maternal great-uncle, paternal great-aunt, or maternal great-aunt of a grandfather or grandmother, the propatruus, proavunculus, proamita, or promatertera of a grandfather or grandmother, the abpatruus, abauunculus, abamita, or abmatertera of a father or mother: of the atavus's brother, there are thirty-two persons; for to the sixteen whom the atavus completes, just as many are added because of the double persona of the brother; for it is necessary that sixteen brothers of the atavus be calculated on the father's side, and sixteen on the mother's side.
similiter ataui sorores triginta duo: fiunt sexaginta quattuor: et totidem atauiae fratris, item sororis.
Similarly, the sisters of the atavus are thirty-two; they make sixty-four; and just as many for the brother of the atavia, and likewise for her sister.
patrui maximi filius filia: hi sunt ataui nepos neptis ex filio, abaui fratris filius filia.
The son or daughter of a patruus maximus: these are the grandson or granddaughter of an atavus from a son, the son or daughter of an abavus's brother.
amitae maximae filius filia: hi sunt ataui nepos neptis ex filia, abaui sororis filius filia.
The son or daughter of an amita maxima: these are the grandson or granddaughter of an atavus from a daughter, the son or daughter of an abavus's sister.
auunculi maximi filius filia: hi sunt ataui nepos neptis ex filio, abauiae fratris filius filia.
The son or daughter of an auunculus maximus: these are the grandson or granddaughter of an atavus from a son, the son or daughter of an abavia's brother.
materterae maximae filius filia: hi sunt ataui nepos neptis ex filia, abauiae sororis filius filia.
The son or daughter of a matertera maxima: these are the grandson or granddaughter of an atavus from a daughter, the son or daughter of an abavia's sister.
hae omnes personae, quas a patrui maximi filio enumerauimus, proaui proauiaeque eius, de cuius cognatione quaeritur, consobrinae sunt, aui auiaeque eiusdem propius sobrinis.
All these persons, whom we have enumerated starting from the son of a patruus maximus, are consobrinae to the great-grandfather and great-grandmother of the one whose relationship is being investigated, and propius sobrinis to the grandfather and grandmother of the same.
singulae appellationes continent personas sedecim, quia, cum patruus maximus sedecim efficiat, filius eius eandem habet enumerationem totidemque filia: et fit ex omnibus his, quas a patrui maximi filio comprehendimus, ductis per octo sedecies, centum uiginti octo.
Each designation contains sixteen persons, because, since a patruus maximus makes sixteen, his son has the same enumeration and the daughter just as many; and from all these, whom we include starting from the son of a patruus maximus, sixteen multiplied by eight makes one hundred twenty-eight.
The grandson of a patruus maior contains sixteen persons (for he is the great-grandson of an abavus or abavia), and since an abavus is counted eight times, the grandsons calculated twice eight times make the above-written number.
patrui maioris neptis item.
The granddaughter of a patruus maior likewise.
auunculi maioris nepos neptis eadem ratione personas conplebunt triginta duo.
The grandson and granddaughter of an auunculus maior by the same reasoning will complete thirty-two persons.
amitae maioris nepos neptis eadem ratione item.
The grandson and granddaughter of an amita maior likewise by the same reasoning.
materterae maioris nepos neptis item.
The grandson and granddaughter of a matertera maior likewise.
And thus from all of them, one hundred twenty-eight are gathered.
his personis auus auia eius, de cuius cognatione quaeritur, propius sobrinis sunt, pater mater sobrinus sobrina: is de cuius cognatione quaeritur, sobrino natus est: hic proximo nomine definitur parentis sui sobrinus, ut Trebatius ait, rationemque nominis hanc reddit, quod ultimi cognationum gradus sobrinorum fiunt itaque sobrini filium recte proximum nomen.
To these persons, the grandfather and grandmother of the one whose relationship is being investigated are propius sobrinis, and the father and mother are sobrinus and sobrina; the one whose relationship is being investigated is born from a sobrinus. This person is defined by the closest term as the sobrinus of his own parent, as Trebatius says, and he gives this reason for the term: because the last degrees of relationships are made of sobrini, and therefore the son of a sobrinus is rightly called the closest term.
By him himself, this person will be called "the son of this sobrinus", and therefore those who are born from sobrini call each other "the closest term"; for these have no proper name by which they may be called among themselves.
patrui magni pronepos proneptis.
The great-grandson and great-granddaughter of a patruus magnus.
auunculi magni pronepos proneptis.
The great-grandson and great-granddaughter of an auunculus magnus.
amitae magnae pronepos proneptis.
The great-grandson and great-granddaughter of an amita magna.
materterae magnae pronepos proneptis.
The great-grandson and great-granddaughter of a matertera magna.
ex his omnibus centum uiginti octo personae efficiuntur, quia singulae appellationes sedecim complent: nam cum exempli gratia patruus magnus quadrifariam intellegitur, ad singulorum patruorum magnorum personas quadruplicatus pronepos, item proneptis triginta duo personas reddet, totque quater numeratae illam, quae proposita est, summam efficiunt.
From all these, one hundred twenty-eight persons are made, because individual designations complete sixteen; for since, by way of example, a patruus magnus is understood in four ways, the great-grandson quadrupled for the persons of individual patrui magni, and likewise the great-granddaughter, will yield thirty-two persons, and these being counted four times make that sum which was proposed.
Their fathers and mothers are sobrini and sobrinae to the one whose relationship is being investigated, and he himself is born from a sobrinus or sobrina to them.
patrui abnepos abneptis.
The great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter of a patruus.
auunculi abnepos abneptis.
The great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter of an auunculus.
amitae abnepos abneptis.
The great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter of an amita.
materterae abnepos abneptis.
The great-great-grandson and great-great-granddaughter of a matertera.
These individual names contain sixteen persons; for, by way of example, the great-great-grandson of a patruus will be so enumerated that, the patruus being taken in two ways, the great-grandson is traced four times, and the great-granddaughter just as many times, and thus we come to their sons calculated sixteen times; by the same reasoning to the daughter, and likewise for the others; and through this, from all of them, the number of one hundred twenty-eight persons will be made.
hi sunt ei, de cuius cognatione quaeritur, consobrinorum nepotes neptesque, ipsi eorum, de cuius cognatione quaeritur, patrui maximi auunculi maximi amitae maximae materterae maximae filius filia, item proaui proauiae consobrinus.
These are the grandsons and granddaughters of the consobrini of the one whose relationship is being investigated, and they themselves are the son and daughter of the patruus maximus, auunculus maximus, amita maxima, or matertera maxima of the one whose relationship is being investigated, and likewise the consobrinus of the great-grandfather or great-grandmother.
fratris sororisque adnepos adneptis: personas continent centum uiginti octo.
The great-great-great-grandson and great-great-great-granddaughter of a brother and sister: they contain one hundred twenty-eight persons.
trinepotis filius, item filia: trineptis filius, item filia.
The son of a trinepos, likewise the daughter; the son of a trineptis, likewise the daughter.
hi centum uiginti octo fiunt, quod, cum trinepos trineptisque, ut supra demonstrauimus, sexaginta quattuor impleant, filius eorum eadem enumeratione totidemque filia computabitur.
These become one hundred twenty-eight, because, since a trinepos and a trineptis, as we showed above, complete sixty-four, their son will be calculated by the same enumeration, and the daughter just as many.
