In the second degree, these twelve persons are included: grandfather, that is, the father of the father and of the mother; likewise grandmother, similarly both paternal and maternal; brother is also understood through either parent, that is, either through the mother only, or through the father, or through both, that is, from the same two parents; but this one does not increase the number, because he does not differ at all from the one who has the same father only, except that he has the same cognates, both paternal and maternal; and therefore it is accustomed to happen among those who are born of different parents, that he who is a brother to my brother is not my cognate.
Suppose that I have a brother from the same father only, and he has a brother from the same mother: they are brothers to each other, but the other is not a cognate to me.
soror similiter numeratur ut frater.
Sister is counted in the same way as brother.
nepos quoque dupliciter intellegitur ex filio uel filia natus.
Grandson also is understood in a twofold way, as born from a son or a daughter.
idem est et in nepte.
The same applies to granddaughter.
In the third degree, thirty-two persons are included: great-grandfather, who is understood in a fourfold way: for he is the father of the paternal or maternal grandfather, likewise the father of the paternal grandmother or maternal grandmother.
Great-grandmother also comprises four persons: for she is the mother of either the paternal grandfather or the paternal grandmother, likewise the mother of the maternal grandfather and similarly of the maternal grandmother.
Paternal uncle, moreover, is the brother of the father, and he himself is to be understood in a twofold way, from the father or the mother.
auia paterna mea nupsit patri tuo, peperit te, aut auia paterna tua nupsit patri meo, peperit me: ego tibi patruus sum et tu mihi.
My paternal grandmother married your father and gave birth to you, or your paternal grandmother married my father and gave birth to me: I am a paternal uncle to you, and you to me.
This happens if each of two women marries the other's son: for the males born of them are mutually paternal uncles, the females mutually paternal aunts, likewise the males are similarly paternal uncles to the females, and the females are paternal aunts to them.
If a man and a woman—he has married her daughter, and she has married his son: those who are born of the father of the young man [will call] those born of the mother of the girl 'brother's children', and the latter will call the former paternal uncles and paternal aunts.
auunculus est matris frater eadem significatione, qua in patruo diximus contigit.
Maternal uncle is the brother of the mother, and the same relationship happens as we have described in the case of the paternal uncle.
If two men each marry the other's daughter, the males born of them will be mutually maternal uncles, the females mutually maternal aunts, and by the same reasoning the males will be maternal uncles to the girls, and the latter will be maternal aunts to them.
amita est patris soror sicut supra accipiendi.
Paternal aunt is the sister of the father, to be understood as above.
matertera est matris soror similiter ut supra.
Maternal aunt is the sister of the mother, similarly as above.
This must be noted, that whereas the brothers and sisters of the father and mother are called paternal uncles, paternal aunts, maternal uncles, and maternal aunts, the sons and daughters of a brother and a sister do not have a special name of relationship, but are designated as 'sons and daughters of a brother and sister'; which indeed will appear from later passages to happen in the case of others as well.
Great-grandson also and great-granddaughter are understood in a fourfold way: for they either descend from a grandson from a son, or from a grandson from a daughter, or they are propagated from a granddaughter from a son, or from a granddaughter from a daughter.
