A similar slaughter of the Etruscans took place in the territory of Veii, who felt so little pity for a neighboring city of now nearly four hundred years, oppressed by an unseen and unheard-of enemy, that they actually made incursions into Roman territory at that very time, and, laden with booty, even had it in mind to attack Veii and its garrison, the last hope of the Roman name. The Roman soldiers had seen them wandering through the fields, and driving their booty before them in a gathered column, and they perceived their camp pitched not far from Veii.
