I have the closest intimacy and friendship with Publius Terentius Hispo, who acts as deputy manager in the collection of the pasture-tax, and many great, mutual, and equal obligations pass between us.
His highest reputation is at stake in his concluding agreements with the remaining states.
It does not escape my notice that we tried that matter at Ephesus and could in no way obtain it from the Ephesians; but since, as everyone thinks and I understand, by your outstanding integrity as well as your singular humanity and gentleness, you have succeeded in achieving whatever you wish by a mere nod, with the Greeks most willing to oblige, I beg of you more than ordinary that, for the sake of my honor, you will be pleased to let Hispo be affected by this praise.
Furthermore, I have the closest connection with the partners in the pasture-tax, not only for the reason that that whole company is under my protection, but also because I am on most intimate terms with most of the partners.
Thus you will both have honored my dear Hispo through me, and have made the company more closely attached to me; and you yourself will reap the greatest fruit both from the respect of Hispo, a most grateful man, and from the gratitude of the partners, who are most influential men, and you will have conferred the greatest favor on me.
For I would wish you to believe that, in your whole province and in all your command, there is nothing you can do that would be more pleasing to me.
