Origen · Selecta on Exodus §9-14

Spiritual Interpretation of Unleavened Bread and Passover

Passage 2 of 7 · Greek

Summary

The author provides allegorical and spiritual interpretations of the Exodus regulations, including the removal of leaven, the anointing of the lintel and posts, and the Passover rules, relating them to the tripartite soul and the unity of the Church.

«Whoever eats leaven, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.» A man shall be cut off on account of leaven; and does the God of all, who ordains the laws, just as He destroys the adulterer, just as He destroys the fornicator, just as He destroys the corrupter of youth, in this way destroy the one who has leaven in his house on the day of unleavened bread?
Τοῦτο κατὰ Θεόν ἐστι;
Is this according to God?
τοῦτο κατὰ νόμον τὸν οὐράνιόν ἐστιν;
Is this according to the heavenly law?
But I would say that if you have the leaven of wickedness, and do not cut off all the leaven of evil from your ruling principle (hegemonikon)—for this is your true house—the God of all decrees that you be cut off if you do not cast away the old leaven from yourself.
For you, having come to the season of new things, having become new, must have nothing ancient. «The ancient things have passed away,» and so on.
See how it was necessary to celebrate the feast of unleavened bread in the month of new things.
«You shall touch the lintel and both doorposts with the blood that is by the door.» The "lintel," as one of those before us explained, is the rational part; and "both doorposts" are the spirited and the desiring parts.
By the same author.
For we do not cast out the destroyer by some device after he has come inside, but we keep guard through the law so that he may not even enter in the first place.
And the guard and security is the marking of the lintel and the doorposts of the entrance with the blood of the lamb.
«And it came to pass at midnight, and the Lord struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt.» For God brings these death-bearing plagues through angels, just as we also know in Kings how in one night the angel destroyed one hundred and eighty-five thousand of the Assyrians.
«This is the law of the Passover: No foreigner shall eat of it.
And every slave of anyone, bought with money, you shall circumcise him, and then he shall eat of it;» and so on.
Consistently with what has been set forth, this is the third law, which the Lord spoke again besides the two laws.
But pay attention to the precision of the Scripture, that the Lord did not speak this law concerning the Passover in the beginning.
For if He had spoken while they were still in Egypt, before Israel departed from Egypt: «No foreigner shall eat of it.
And every slave of anyone, bought with money, you shall circumcise, and then he shall eat of it,» the great mixed multitude that went out of Egypt would not have gone out.
Therefore, He reserved this law, so that after those who wished had gone out, another law might be given.
And after a little.
If we allegorize these things in relation to our soul, we will say that the home-born are the reasons (logoi) that are innate to us and cultivated, starting to understand from innate conceptions; and the bought with money are all those that come to us from outside through instruction from lessons.
Therefore, He says to circumcise and purify everyone, both the home-born and the bought with money.
But we must not accept any foreigner, as if receiving a foreign doctrine; for He does not admit a foreigner who wishes to profane the feast of the Lord.
And after a little.
For if you eat the words of God in the Church, but you also eat in the synagogue of the Jews, you transgress the commandment which says: «It shall be eaten in one house.» And if you partake of the words of God in one house, the Church; then leaving it, you suppose you partake of God in a heretical synagogue, while the commandment says: «It shall be eaten in one house,» you do not eat in one house.
Understand, therefore, the Church to be the one house; do not eat of the sheep anywhere if you are outside the Church.
«And you shall not carry any of the flesh outside of the house.» One must not preach the ecclesiastical word outside of the Church, just as one does not carry the flesh outside of the house; and I mean into a synagogue of Jews or heretics; for it is like throwing pearls before swine.

Notes

  1. §9εἴποιμι ἂν — This is a potential optative with ἄν ("I would say" or "I might say"). Placed immediately after posing strong rhetorical questions ("Is this according to God?") regarding the literal interpretation of the law (executing someone for possessing leaven), it is used to introduce the author's allegorical and spiritual interpretation (cleansing the ruling principle of wickedness) in a polite yet confident manner.
  2. §10Καθίξετε — This is a textual variant or corruption of `καὶ θίξετε` ("and you shall touch") from the Septuagint (LXX) Exodus 12:22 into a single word `καθίξετε`. In this context, combined with the following genitive `τῆς φλιᾶς` ("the lintel"), it is interpreted in its original sense of "touching" or "anointing" (future of θιγγάνω, which governs the genitive case).
  3. §13οὐκ ἂν ἐξεληλύθησαν ὁ πολύμικτος πολὺς ὅχλος — This constitutes the apodosis of a past contrary-to-fact conditional sentence (ἄν + aorist indicative `ἐξεληλύθησαν`). Furthermore, while the subject `ὁ πολύμικτος πολὺς ὅχλος` ("the great mixed multitude") is grammatically singular, the verb `ἐξεληλύθησαν` is plural. This is an instance of "agreement according to sense" (constructio ad sensum), a common feature in Greek where collective singular nouns take plural verbs.
