In addition to these things, you asserted that Daniel is said by this Scripture to have cried out, having been filled with the Spirit, that the judgment was unjust (72), whereas the Scripture admittedly received as his contains him prophesying in another manner, that is, by visions, dreams, and the appearance of an angel, but nowhere by prophetic inspiration.
But you seem to me not to have fully observed that saying: "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets," not only in regard to them all together, but also in regard to each one individually.
And if you observe, you will find that the same holy men experienced divine dreams, angelic appearances, and inspirations.
And for the present, it is sufficient to use the testimonies written concerning Jacob (73); who relates such things concerning divine dreams: "And it came to pass at the time that the flocks conceived (74), that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw them in a dream, and, behold, the rams and the he-goats which leaped upon the sheep and the she-goats were ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled-sprinkled.
Καὶ εἶπέ μοι ὁ ἅνγελος τοῦ Θεοῦ καθʼ ὕπνον· Ἰακώβ. Ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπον· Τί ἐστι;
And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, What is it?
And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams and he-goats which leap upon the sheep and the she-goats are ring-streaked, speckled, and grisled-sprinkled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
I am the God who appeared to thee in the place of God, where thou anointedst the pillar, and vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred." And concerning a superior manifestation while awake, these things are said of him: "And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh.
And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
Εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ· Τί τὸ ὅνομά σου;
And he said unto him, What is thy name?
And he said, Jacob.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast power with God, and with men hast prevailed.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.
καὶ εἶπεν· Ἵνα τί τοῦτο ἐρωτᾶς τὸ ὄνομά μου;
And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?
And he blessed him there.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel [Face of God]: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
And as he passed Peniel [the Face of God] the sun rose upon him." And that he prophesies also from inspiration is clear from these words: "And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days: gather yourselves together, and hear, ye sons of Jacob; and hearken unto Israel your father: Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, harsh to be borne and harsh in self-will: thou didst overflow like water, boil not over; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou the couch whither thou wentest up." In like manner, the blessings toward the rest, being prophecies, were spoken from inspiration.
There is nothing wonderful, therefore, if Daniel too, at one time spoke the refutation against the elders from inspiration (75), and at another time, as you say, by dreams or vision, and at another time experienced the appearance of an angel.
