§3Καὶ μὴν γοῦν ἴσμεν τινὰς τῶν ἡμετέρων ἀδελφῶν ἀντιβλέψαντας τῇ γραφῇ καὶ λέγοντας· οὐ πιστεύω τῇ ἐγγαστριμύθῳ.
Indeed, we know that some of our brethren have opposed the Scripture and say: "I do not believe the medium.
λέγει ἡ ἐγγαστρίμυθος ἑωρακέναι τὸν Σαμουήλ, ψεύδεται.
The medium says she has seen Samuel, but she lies.
Σαμουὴλ οὐχ ἀνήχθη, Σαμουὴλ οὐ λαλεῖ.
Samuel was not brought up, Samuel does not speak.
ἀλλ’ ὥσπερ εἰσί τινες ψευδοπροφῆται λέγοντες· »τάδε λέγει κύριος« καὶ »κύριος οὐκ ἐλάλησεν«, οὕτως καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον τοῦτο ψεύδεται, ἐπαγγελλόμενον ἀνάγειν τὸν ὑπὸ τοῦ Σαοὺλ προστασσόμενον.
But just as there are some false prophets saying, 'Thus says the Lord,' and 'the Lord did not speak,' so also this demon lies when promising to bring up the one commanded by Saul.
»τίνα γὰρ ἀναγάγω; « φησίν· »Σαμουὴλ ἀνάγαγέ μοι«. καὶ ταῦτα λέγεται ὑπὸ τῶν φασκόντων τὴν ταύτην μὴ εἶναι ἀληθῆ· Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου;
For she says, 'Whom shall I bring up?' and [Saul says], 'Bring up Samuel for me.'" And these things are said by those who claim that this [story] is not true: "Samuel in Hades?
Σαμουὴλ ὑπὸ ἐγγαστριμύθου ἀνάγεται ὁ ἐξαίρετος τῶν προφητῶν, ὁ ἀπὸ τῆς γενέσεως ἀναδείμενος τῷ θεῷ, ὁ πρὸ γενέσεως ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ λεγόμενος ἔσεσθαι, ὁ ἅμα τῷ ἀπογαλακτισθῆναι ἐνδυσάμενος ἐφοὺδ καὶ διπλοΐδα καὶ ἱερεὺς γενόμενος τοῦ κυρίου, ᾡ παιδίῳ ἔτι ὄντι ἔχρημάτισεν ὁ κύριος λαλῶν;
Samuel is brought up by a medium, he, the eminent one among the prophets, who was dedicated to God from his birth, who before birth was said to be in the temple, who as soon as he was weaned put on the ephod and the robe and became a priest of the Lord, to whom when he was still a child the Lord spoke and gave oracle?

Samuel in Hades?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν τοῖς καταχθονίοις ὁ διαδεξάμενος Ἡλὶ διὰ τὰ τῶν τέκνων ἁμαρτήματα καὶ παρανομήματα καταδικασθέντα ὑπὸ τῆς προνοίας;
Samuel among those under the earth, he who succeeded Eli when Eli's children's sins and transgressions were condemned by providence?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου, οὗ ὁ θεὸς ἐπήκουσεν ἐν καιρῷ θερισμοῦ πυρῶν, καὶ ὑετὸν ἔδωκεν ἐλθεῖν ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ;
Samuel in Hades, whose prayer God listened to at the time of the wheat harvest, and gave rain to come from heaven?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου ὁ τοιαῦτα παρρησιασάμενος, εἰ ἐπιθύμημά | | τινος ἔλαβεν;
Samuel in Hades, who spoke with such boldness, whether he took any coveted possession of anyone?
οὐκ ἔλαβεν τὸν μόσχον, οὐκ ἔλαβεν τὸν βοῦν, ἔκρινεν καὶ κατεδίκασεν τὸν λαὸν μένων πένης· οὐδέποτε ἐπεθύμησεν λαβεῖν τι ἀπὸ τηλικούτου λαοῦ καὶ τοσούτου.
He did not take a calf, he did not take an ox; he judged and condemned the people remaining poor; he never desired to take anything from so great and so numerous a people.
Σαμουὴλ ἴνα τί ἐν ᾅδου;
Samuel, why is he in Hades?
ὁρᾶτε τί ἀκολουθεῖ τῷ Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου;
Do you see what follows from Samuel being in Hades?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου;

διὰ τί οὐχὶ καὶ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ Ἰσαὰκ καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἐν ᾅδου;
Why not also Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in Hades?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου;
Samuel in Hades?
διὰ τί οὐχὶ καὶ Μωσῆς ὁ συνεζευγμένος τῷ Σαμουὴλ κατὰ τὸ εἰρημένον· οὐδὲ ἐὰν στῇ Μωσῆς καὶ Σαμουήλ, οὐδὲ ἐκείνων;
Why not also Moses, who is paired with Samuel according to what was said: 'Not even if Moses and Samuel stood, not even theirs'?
Σαμουὴλ ἐν ᾅδου;
Samuel in Hades?
ἵνα τί μὴ καὶ Ἱερεμίας έν ᾅδου, πρὸς ὃν εἰρηται· »πρὸ τοῦ με πλάσαι σε ἐν κοιλίᾳ ἐπίσταμαί σε, καὶ πρὸ τοῦ σε ἐξελθεῖν ἐκ μήτρας ἡγίακά σε«;
Why not also Jeremiah in Hades, to whom it has been said: 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I sanctified you'?
ἐν ᾅδου καὶ Ἡσαΐας, ἐν ᾅδου καὶ Ἱερεμίας, ἐν ᾅδου πάντες οἱ προφῆται, ἐν ᾅδου.
Isaiah in Hades, Jeremiah in Hades, all the prophets in Hades, in Hades?"
