For let AB be an equal multiple of Γ and ΔE of Ζ.
I say that as Γ is to Ζ, so is AB to ΔE. For since AB is an equal multiple of Γ and ΔE of Ζ, therefore, as many magnitudes as there are in AB equal to Γ, so many are there also in ΔE equal to Ζ. Let AB be divided into the magnitudes AH, HΘ, ΘB equal to Γ, and ΔE into the magnitudes ΔK, KΛ, ΛE equal to Ζ; then the multitude of AH, HΘ, ΘB will be equal to the multitude of ΔK, KΛ, ΛE. And since AH, HΘ, ΘB are equal to one another, and ΔK, KΛ, ΛE are also equal to one another, therefore, as AH is to ΔK, so is HΘ to KΛ, and ΘB to ΛE. Therefore, as one of the antecedents is to one of the consequents, so will all the antecedents be to all the consequents; therefore, as AH is to ΔK, so is AB to ΔE. But AH is equal to Γ, and ΔK to Ζ; therefore, as Γ is to Ζ, so is AB to ΔE. Therefore, parts have the same ratio as their equally many times multiples, taken correspondingly; which was to be proved.
If four magnitudes are proportional, they will also be alternately proportional.
Let four proportional magnitudes be A, B, Γ, Δ, so that as A is to B, so is Γ to Δ; I say that they will also be alternately proportional, so that as A is to Γ, so is B to Δ. For let equal multiples E, Z be taken of A, B, and other, as it may happen, equal multiples H, Θ of Γ, Δ. And since E is an equal multiple of A and Z of B, and parts have the same ratio as their equally many times multiples, therefore, as A is to B, so is E to Z. And as A is to B, so is Γ to Δ; therefore, as Γ is to Δ, so is E to Z. Again, since H, Θ are equal multiples of Γ, Δ, therefore, as Γ is to Δ, so is H to Θ. And as Γ is to Δ, so is E to Z; therefore, as E is to Z, so is H to Θ. And if four magnitudes are proportional, and the first is greater than the third, the second will also be greater than the fourth, and if equal, equal, and if less, less.
If therefore E exceeds H, Z also exceeds Θ, and if equal, equal, and if less, less.
And E, Z are equal multiples of A, B, and H, Θ other, as it may happen, equal multiples of Γ, Δ; therefore, as A is to Γ, so is B to Δ. Therefore, if four magnitudes are proportional, they will also be alternately proportional; which was to be proved.
