Rectangle and Squares on a Bisected and Extended Line

Passage 29 of 316 · Greek

Summary

In Proposition 6, the geometric relationship between segments is proven when a straight line is bisected and another segment is added in a straight line. In Proposition 7, the relationship concerning the squares on the whole and on one of the segments, and the rectangle contained by them, is proven when a line is cut at random.

If a straight line be cut in half, and a straight line be added to it in a straight line, the rectangle contained by the whole with the added straight line and the added straight line together with the square on the half is equal to the square on the straight line made up of the half and the added straight line.
For let a straight line AB be cut in half at the point C, and let a straight line BD be added to it in a straight line; I say that the rectangle contained by AD, DB together with the square on CB is equal to the square on CD.
For let the square CEZD be described on CD, and let DE be joined, and through the point B let BH be drawn parallel to either of EG, DZ, and through the point Q let KM again be drawn parallel to either of AB, EZ, and further through A let AK be drawn parallel to either of CL, DM. Since therefore AC is equal to CB, AL is also equal to CQ. But CQ is equal to QZ; therefore AL is also equal to QZ.
Let CM be added to each; therefore the whole AM is equal to the gnomon NXO.
But AM is the rectangle contained by AD, DB; for DM is equal to DB; therefore the gnomon NXO is also equal to the rectangle contained by AD, DB.
Let LH, which is equal to the square on BC, be added to each; therefore the rectangle contained by AD, DB together with the square on CB is equal to the gnomon NXO and LH.
But the gnomon NXO and LH are the whole square CEZD, which is on CD; therefore the rectangle contained by AD, DB together with the square on CB is equal to the square on CD.
If therefore a straight line be cut in half, and a straight line be added to it in a straight line, the rectangle contained by the whole with the added straight line and the added straight line together with the square on the half is equal to the square on the straight line made up of the half and the added straight line; which was to be proved.
If a straight line be cut at random, the sum of the square on the whole and that on one of the segments is equal to twice the rectangle contained by the whole and the said segment together with the square on the remaining segment.
For let a straight line AB be cut at random at the point C; I say that the sum of the squares on AB, BC is equal to twice the rectangle contained by AB, BC together with the square on CA.
For let the square ADEB be described on AB, and let the figure be drawn.
Since therefore AH is equal to HE, let CZ be added to each; therefore the whole AZ is equal to the whole CE; therefore AZ, CE are double of AZ.
But AZ, CE are the gnomon KLM and the square CZ; therefore the gnomon KLM and the square CZ are double of AZ.
But twice the rectangle contained by AB, BC is also double of AZ; for BZ is equal to BC; therefore the gnomon KLM and the square CZ are equal to twice the rectangle contained by AB, BC.
Let DH, which is the square on AC, be added to each; therefore the gnomon KLM and the squares BH, HD are equal to twice the rectangle contained by AB, BC together with the square on AC.
But the gnomon KLM and the squares BH, HD are the whole ADEB and CZ, which are the squares on AB, BC; therefore the sum of the squares on AB, BC is equal to twice the rectangle contained by AB, BC together with the square on AC.
If therefore a straight line be cut at random, the sum of the square on the whole and that on one of the segments is equal to twice the rectangle contained by the whole and the said segment together with the square on the remaining segment; which was to be proved.

Notes

  1. 2.prop.6τὸ ὑπὸ τῆς ὅλης σὺν τῇ προσκειμένῃ καὶ τῆς προσκειμένης περιεχόμενον ὀρθογώνιον — Meaning "the rectangle contained by the whole with the added [straight line] and the added [straight line]". Both "τῆς ὅλης σὺν τῇ προσκειμένῃ" and "τῆς προσκειμένης" are coordinate genitives governed by the preposition "ὑπό".
  2. 2.prop.6τῷ ἀπὸ τῆς συγκειμένης ἔκ τε τῆς ἡμισείας καὶ τῆς προσκειμένης τετραγώνῳ — Meaning "the square on the [straight line] made up of the half and the added [straight line]". The prepositional phrase "ἔκ τε τῆς ἡμισείας καὶ τῆς προσκειμένης" modifies the substantivized participle "τῆς συγκειμένης".
  3. 2.prop.7τὸ ἀπὸ τῆς ὅλης καὶ τὸ ἀφʼ ἑνὸς τῶν τμημάτων τὰ συναμφότερα τετράγωνα — Meaning "the sum of the squares on the whole and on one of the segments". "τὰ συναμφότερα" (both together) is in apposition to "τετράγωνα", indicating the sum of the two squares.
  4. 2.prop.7τῷ τε δὶς ὑπὸ τῆς ὅλης καὶ τοῦ εἰρημένου τμήματος περιεχομένῳ ὀρθογωνίῳ — Meaning "to twice the rectangle contained by the whole and the said segment". The adverb "δίς" (twice) directly modifies the noun phrase "τῷ ... ὀρθογωνίῳ", denoting twice the area of the rectangle.
