§55.
5.
Therefore, one must take up each of these aforementioned things, and transfer wisdom into medicine, and medicine into wisdom.
For a physician who is a lover of wisdom is equal to a god.
For indeed, there is no great difference on either side; for all the things that pertain to wisdom are present in medicine: freedom from avarice, modesty, shame, restraint, reputation, judgment, quietness, proper encounter, cleanliness, speaking in maxims, knowledge of things useful and necessary for life, rejection of impurity, freedom from superstition, divine excellence.
For they possess what they possess against intemperance, vulgarity, greed, lust, robbery, and impudence.
For this is the knowledge of those who approach, and the use of things pertaining to friendship, and how and in what manner one should behave toward children and toward money.
In this way, then, a certain wisdom is shared, because the physician also possesses most of these things.
§66.
6.
For indeed, the knowledge concerning the gods is especially interwoven in the mind itself; for in other sufferings and symptoms, medicine is found to be for the most part honorably established by the gods.
And physicians have yielded to the gods; for the ruling power in it is not superfluous.
For indeed, they handle many things, and many things are also controlled for them through themselves.
And what medicine now surpasses in, it will provide from there.
For there is a certain path in wisdom thus even for those very people; but they do not think so, yet they acknowledge the things that happen to bodies, which indeed have gone through all of medicine, being transformed or remade, some being healed by surgery, others being assisted, treated, or regimened.
And let the most essential thing be for the knowledge of these.
§77.
7.
Since all these aforementioned things are so, the physician must have a certain pleasantness at hand; for sternness is difficult of approach both to the healthy and to the sick.
And one must guard oneself as much as possible, not showing many parts of the body, nor chatting much with laymen, but only what is necessary; for one should think that this is equivalent to force in the calling for treatment.
And do nothing of these things excessively, nor with ostentation; but let all these things be considered, so that they may be prepared beforehand for your facility, as is necessary; otherwise, in time of need, there will be an unpleasant helplessness.
§88.
8.
And one must practice these things in medicine with all composure: concerning palpation, anointing, and drenching, for the dexterity of the hands; concerning lint, compresses, bandages, things resulting from setting, and medicines for wounds and eye diseases, and those according to their kinds, so that instruments, machines, iron tools, and the rest may be prepared beforehand for you; for helplessness in these things is lack of resource and harm.
And let there be another simpler kit for journeys, handled by hands; and the most convenient is by systematic methods; for it is not possible for the physician to carry everything.
§99.
9.
And let medicines and their powers, both simple and written-down, be easy for you to remember, if indeed there is in mind also the things concerning the cure of diseases, and their modes, and how many ways and in what manner they stand concerning each; for this is the beginning, middle, and end in medicine.
§1010.
10.
And let kinds of emollients be prepared beforehand for you for their respective uses, and drafts capable of dispersing, prepared from a prescription according to their kinds.
And let those for purgation also be prepared beforehand, gathered from proper places, prepared in the manner required, studied with respect to their kinds and quantities for aging, and others fresh for the occasion, and the rest in proportion.
