Hippocrates · On the Nature of Bones §5-8

Branching and Course of Major Blood Vessels

Passage 2 of 7 · Greek

Summary

It describes the branches and pathways of the vessels and blood-carrying channels from the heart, aorta, and liver to the organs and ribs, as well as the paths of the thick vessels that cross from the eyes and breasts to the genitals and opposite limbs.

§55.
5.
Those extending along the ribs are below each of the ribs, not toward the head, but lower down and from the aorta.
The aorta then, flowing underneath, distributes to the ribs; and from the thick one from the heart, one runs backward, inclining to the left. Then one goes through the middle of the vertebrae as far as the ends of the ribs, distributing branches not equally to the right and left ribs; another branches off higher up on the right side, distributing equally.
§66.
6.
And by each clavicle, from the vessels, two upwards and two under the chest, some to the right and some to the left, were split off as branches, these being more toward the neck; and two more toward the heart, some to the right and some to the left, from each along the ribs; and from these, just as the lower ones were split, until they joined with the lower one that ran backward from the heart.
§77.
7.
The blood-carrying vessel from this aorta was split for this reason, because it is elevated there, passing through the heart.
Below the ribs, the thick blood-carrying vessel, called the vein, distributes again along the vertebrae on its own, and there it is held close, and no longer hangs suspended as it does above, passing through the liver.
In the loins, the aorta is above, and below is the blood-carrying vessel that came from the liver through the diaphragm, elevated, carried along the right side of the heart as far as the clavicles, single, except in so far as it communicates with the heart itself.
The parts splitting off along it are more superficial, while those passing through the cavity of the heart, then from the heart the one on the left lies single against the spine, which runs backward to the upper part of the body as far as the highest ribs; and it has branches from itself extended along each rib according to nature as far as the junction of the chest, both to the left and to the right; and its straight course is more toward the vertebrae than the cord of the aorta and that of the vessel from the liver.
Toward the lower part of the heart, its straight cord is more toward the vertebrae than that of the aorta, the second one past the heart, and it turned to the lower parts of the diaphragm, those suspended from the spine; and from there the branches are brought straight down, passing through bones and flesh to one another.
§88.
8.
The thick vessels are naturally formed thus: from the eye along the eyebrow, through the back along the lung under the chest; the one from the right to the left, and the one from the left to the right.
Therefore, the one from the left goes through the liver to the kidney and the testicle, and the one from the right to the spleen, kidney, and testicle; and for these, the privy part is the opening.
And from the right breast to the left hip and to the leg; and from the left to the right.
The right eye is from the left, and the right testicle in the same manner; and from the right, the left.

Notes

  1. 5ἀπὸ τῆς παχείης ἀπὸ καρδίης — The noun φλεβός (vein/vessel) is omitted after the adjective παχείης, meaning 'from the thick vessel from the heart.'
  2. 7πλὴν ὅσον αὐτῇ τῇ καρδίῃ κοινωνέει — The phrase πλὴν ὅσον is a limiting conjunctional expression meaning 'except in so far as.' The verb κοινωνέει governs the dative (αὐτῇ τῇ καρδίῃ) to denote communication or association.
  3. 7τὰ μὲν κατ’ αὐτὴν σχιζόμενα ἐπιπολαιότερα, τὰ δὲ τὴν κοιλίην τῆς καρδίης διέχοντα — A contrastive structure with the ellipsis of the main copula (such as ἐστι). The substantivized participle phrases τὰ μὲν... and τὰ δὲ... function as the opposing subjects.
  4. 8ταύτῃσι δὲ τὸ στόμα αἰδοῖον — The pronoun ταύτῃσι is a dative of possession ('for these vessels'), forming a nominal sentence where αἰδοῖον ('the privy part') acts as the predicate noun for the subject τὸ στόμα ('the opening').
