And some are nourished for growth and for existence, others for existence alone, as old people, and others, in addition to these, also for strength.
Διάθεσις ἀθλητικὴ οὐ φύσει· ἕξις ὑγιεινὴ κρείσσων ἐν πᾶσιν.
Athletic disposition is not by nature; a healthy habit is better in all respects.

For differentiation, fifty; for transition, fifty; for delivery, two hundred and forty-two.
οὐκ ἔστι καὶ ἔστι·
This is not so, and yet it is so.
γίνεται δὲ ἐν τούτοισι καὶ πλείω καὶ ἐλάσσω, καὶ ὅλον καὶ κατὰ μέρος, οὐ πολλὸν δὲ καὶ πλείω πλείω καὶ ἐλάσσω ἐλάσσω, τοσαῦτα καὶ ὅσα ἄλλα τούτοισιν ὅμοια.
There occurs in these both more and less, both as a whole and in part, but not by much; and the more is more, and the less is less, both these and other things similar to these.

Nourishment of bones after fracture: for the nose, twice five days; for the jaw, clavicle, and ribs, double that; for the forearm, triple; for the shin and upper arm, quadruple; for the thigh, quintuple; and if there is any greater or lesser variation in these.

The pulsations of veins and the respiration of breath according to age, both harmonious and discordant, are signs of disease and of health, and of health rather than disease, and of disease rather than health; for they are nourishment and breath.

Liquid food is more easily changed than dry; dry food is more easily changed than liquid; that which is difficult to alter is difficult to consume; that which is easy to assimilate is easy to consume.

Καὶ ὁκόσοι ταχείης προσθέσιος δέονται, ὑγρὸν ἴημα ἐς ἀνάληψιν δυνάμιος κράτιστον· ὁκόσοι δὲ ἔτι ταχυτέρης, δι’ ὀσφρήσιος· ὁκόσοι δὲ βραδυτέρης προσθέσιος δέονται, στερεῇ τροφῇ.
And those who need rapid assimilation, a liquid remedy is best for the recovery of strength; those who need it still more rapidly, by means of smell; those who need slower assimilation, by solid food.

Muscles, being more solid, are harder to waste than other parts, except bone and tendon; exercised parts are hard to change, being stronger in their own class than they themselves would otherwise be, and for this reason they are harder to waste than they themselves would otherwise be.

Πῦον τὸ ἐκ σαρκός· πυῶδες τὸ ἐξ αἵματος καὶ ἐξ ἄλλης ὑγρασίης· πῦον τροφὴ ἕλκεος· πυῶδες τροφὴ φλεβὸς, ἀρτηρίης.
Pus is that which comes from flesh; purulent matter is that which comes from blood and from other moisture; pus is the nourishment of an ulcer; purulent matter is the nourishment of a vein and of an artery.

Marrow is the nourishment of bone, and for this reason a callus is formed.
