§3.10.1Πάντα οὖν ῥίψας ταῦτα μόνα τὰ ὀλίγα σύνεχε καὶ ἔτι συμμνημόνευε, ὅτι μόνον ζῇ ἕκαστος τὸ παρὸν τοῦτο, τὸ ἀκαριαῖον· τὰ δὲ ἄλλα ἢ βεβίωται ἢ ἐν ἀδήλῳ, μικρὸν μὲν οὖν ὃ ζῇ ἕκαστος· μικρὸν δὲ τὸ τῆς γῆς γωνίδιον ὅπου ζῇ· μικρὸν δὲ καὶ ἡ μηκίστη ὑστεροφημία καὶ αὕτη δὲ κατὰ διαδοχὴν ἀνθρωπαρίων τάχιστα τεθνηξομένων καὶ οὐκ εἰδότων οὐδὲ ἑαυτοὺς οὐδέ γε τὸν πρόπαλαι τεθνηκότα.
Therefore, casting aside all these things, hold fast to these few alone, and remember further that each person lives only this present moment, which is but an instant; for the rest of life has either already been lived or is in uncertainty. Small, then, is the life that each lives, and small is the tiny corner of the earth where he lives, and small too is the longest posthumous fame, and even this is passed on through a succession of little men who will very soon die, and who do not know even themselves, let alone someone who died long ago.
