And Blatius in this way got the better of Dasius, laying counter-ambushes three times, while Fulvius, the Roman consul, was besieging Herdonia.
καὶ αὐτὸν Ἀννίβας ἔλαθεν ἑσπέρας ἐγγὺς γενόμενος, καὶ ἀπεῖπε πυρὰ μὴ καίειν, καὶ σιωπὴν παρήγγειλεν.
Hannibal, approaching near evening, came upon him unobserved, and forbade the lighting of fires and ordered silence.
περὶ δὲ ἕω, γενομένης ὁμοῦ τι καὶ ὁμίχλης, τοὺς μὲν ἱππέας ἔπεμψεν ἐπιχειρεῖν τῷ Ῥωμαίων στρατοπέδῳ, καὶ αὐτοὺς ἠμύνοντο ἐκεῖνοι, σὺν θορύβῳ μὲν ὡς ἀπʼ εὐνῆς, σὺν θάρσει δὲ οἷα ὀλίγους ποθὲν αὑτοῖς ἐπιφανέντας.
Around dawn, when a mist had also arisen, he sent his cavalry to attack the Roman camp. They defended themselves against them, in confusion indeed as if just from their beds, but with courage as if against only a few appearing from somewhere.
ὁ δʼ Ἀννίβας ἐπὶ θάτερα τῷ πεζῷ τὴν πόλιν περιῄει, κατασκεπτόμενος ἅμα καὶ τοὺς ἔνδον ἐπελπίζων, ἕως ἐπῆλθε τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις ἐν τῇ περιόδῳ, εἴτε προιδόμενος εἴτε κατὰ συντυχίαν, κυκλούμενος αὐτούς.
Meanwhile, Hannibal with his infantry was going around the city on the other side, reconnoitering and at the same time giving hope to those inside, until in his circuit he fell upon the Romans—whether having foreseen it or by chance—encircling them.
οἱ δʼ ἔπιπτον ἤδη λάβρως καὶ ἀθρόως, ἀμφίβολοι γεγονότες· καὶ ἀπέθανον αὐτῶν ἐς ὀκτακισχιλίους, καὶ ὁ ὕπατος αὐτὸς ὁ Φούλουιος.
They were already falling rapidly and in heaps, having been attacked from both sides; and about eight thousand of them died, including the consul Fulvius himself.
οἱ λοιποὶ δʼ ἔς τι χῶμα πρὸ τοῦ στρατοπέδου ἀναθορόντες αὐτό τε διέσωσαν, γενναίως ἀμυνόμενοι, καὶ τὸν Ἀννίβαν ἐκώλυσαν λαβεῖν τὸ στρατόπεδον.
But the rest, rushing up to an embankment in front of the camp, saved it by defending themselves bravely, and prevented Hannibal from taking the camp.
§849μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο Ῥωμαῖοι μὲν τὴν Ἰαπύγων ἀποστάντων ἐδῄουν, Ἀννίβας δὲ τὴν Καμπανῶν, ἐς Ῥωμαίους μεταθεμένων χωρὶς Ἀτέλλης μόνης.
After this, the Romans ravaged the territory of the revolted Iapygians, and Hannibal that of the Campanians, who had gone over to the Romans, with the sole exception of Atella.
καὶ Ἀτελλαίους μετῴκιζεν ἐς Θουρίους, ἵνα μὴ τῷ Βρεττίων καὶ Λευκανῶν καὶ Ἰαπύγων ἐνοχλοῖντο πολέμῳ.
And he relocated the people of Atella to Thurii, so that they might not be harassed by the war of the Bruttians, Lucanians, and Iapygians.
καὶ Ῥωμαῖοι τοὺς ἐκ Νουκερίας ἐκπεσόντας ἐν Ἀτέλλῃ μετῴκιζον·
The Romans, on their part, resettled in Atella those who had been expelled from Nuceria.
ἔς τε τὴν Ἀννίβου ἔτι ὑπήκοον ἐσβαλόντες, Αὐλωνίαν τε εἷλον καὶ τὴν Βρεττίων γῆν ἐπέτρεχον, καὶ Τάραντα φρουρουμένην ὑπὸ Καρθάλωνος ἐκ γῆς καὶ θαλάσσης ἐπολιόρκουν.
Rushing into the territory still subject to Hannibal, they captured Aulonia and overran the country of the Bruttians, and they besieged Tarentum, which was garrisoned by Carthalo, both by land and sea.
ὁ δὲ Καρθάλων, ὀλίγων Καρχηδονίων παρόντων, Βρεττίους ἐς τὴν φρουρὰν προσέλαβεν.
Carthalo, since few Carthaginians were present, took Bruttians into the garrison.
τῶν δὲ Βρεττίων ὁ φρούραρχος ἤρα γυναικός, ἧς ἀδελφὸς ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίοις στρατευόμενος ἔπραξε διὰ τῆς ἀδελφῆς τὸν φρούραρχον ἐνδοῦναι Ῥωμαίοις, ἐπάγουσι τὰς μηχανὰς ᾗ τοῦ τείχους αὐτὸς ἐφρούρει.
Now the garrison commander of these Bruttians was in love with a woman whose brother, serving in the Roman army, arranged through his sister for the commander to betray the place to the Romans at the point of the wall where he himself was keeping guard, when they brought up their engines.
Τάραντα μὲν δὴ Ῥωμαῖοι τόνδε τὸν τρόπον ἀνέλαβον, εὔκαιρον ἐς πολέμους χωρίον καὶ κατὰ γῆν καὶ κατὰ θάλασσαν.
In this manner indeed, the Romans recovered Tarentum, a place well situated for wars both by land and by sea.
§850Ἀννίβας δὲ ἐπειγόμενος ἐς αὐτήν, ὡς ἔμαθεν εἰλημμένην, παρῆλθεν ἀχθόμενος ἐς Θουρίους κἀκεῖθεν ἐς Οὐενουσίαν, ἔνθα αὐτῷ Κλαύδιός τε Μάρκελλος ὁ Σικελίαν ἑλών, πέμπτον ὑπατεύων τότε, καὶ Τίτος Κρισπῖνος ἀντιστρατοπεδεύοντες οὐκ ἐτόλμων ἄρχειν μάχης.
Hannibal, hastening to Tarentum, when he learned it had been taken, passed on in grief to Thurii and from there to Venusia, where Claudius Marcellus, the conqueror of Sicily, who was then consul for the fifth time, and Titus Crispinus, encamped opposite him, did not dare to begin a battle.
λείαν δέ τινα ὑπὸ Νομάδων ἀγομένην Μάρκελλος ἰδών, καὶ δόξας ὀλίγους εἶναι τοὺς ἄγοντας, ἐπέδραμεν αὐτοῖς μετὰ τριακοσίων ἱππέων σὺν καταφρονήσει, καὶ πρῶτος ἡγεῖτο, θυμικὸς ὢν ἐς μάχας καὶ παρακινδυνευτικὸς ἀεί.
But Marcellus, seeing some booty being driven by Numidians, and thinking that those driving it were few, rushed upon them with three hundred horsemen in contempt, and led the way himself, being passionate for battle and always ready to run risks.
ἄφνω δὲ πολλῶν τῶν Λιβύων φανέντων καὶ πανταχόθεν αὐτῷ προσπεσόντων, οἱ μὲν οὐραγοῦντες Ῥωμαίων πρῶτοι φυγῆς ἦρχον, ὁ δὲ Μάρκελλος, ὡς ἑπομένων αὐτῶν, ἐμάχετο γενναίως, μέχρι κατακοντισθεὶς ἀπέθανεν.
Suddenly, many Libyans appeared and fell upon him from all sides. Those in the rear of the Romans were the first to begin to flee; but Marcellus, thinking that they were following him, fought bravely until he died, pierced by javelins.
καὶ αὐτοῦ τῷ σώματι ὁ Ἀννίβας ἐπιστάς, ὡς εἶδε τὰ τραύματα πάντα ἐπὶ τῶν στέρνων, ἐπῄνεσε μὲν ὡς στρατιώτην, ἐπέσκωψε δὲ ὡς στρατηγόν.
Hannibal, standing over his body, when he saw that all the wounds were on his chest, praised him as a soldier, but mocked him as a general.
καὶ τὸν δακτύλιον αὐτοῦ περιελών, τὸ μὲν σῶμα ἔκαυσε λαμπρῶς, καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ τῷ παιδὶ προσέπεμψεν ἐς τὸ Ῥωμαίων στρατόπεδον·
And taking off his ring, he burned the body with great splendor, and sent the bones to his son in the Roman camp.
§851Σαλαπίνοις δὲ μηνίων εὐθὺς ἐτύπωσεν ἐπιστολὴν τῇ σφραγῖδι Μαρκέλλου, πρὶν αἰσθέσθαι πολλοὺς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου, καὶ αὐτόμολον ἄνδρα Ῥωμαῖον ἔπεμψε φέρειν, δηλοῦντα ὅτι στρατιὰ Μαρκέλλου κατόπιν ἔρχοιτο, καὶ ὁ Μάρκελλος αὐτὴν ὑποδέξασθαι κελεύοι.
Angry with the Salapians, Hannibal immediately fabricated a letter with the seal of Marcellus, before many had heard of his death, and sent a Roman deserter to carry it, declaring that the army of Marcellus was coming behind, and that Marcellus ordered them to receive it.
ἄρτι δʼ εἰλήφεσαν Κρισπίνου γράμματα, περιπέμψαντος ἐς ἅπαντας ὅτι τῆς Μαρκέλλου σφραγῖδος Ἀννίβας κεκρατήκοι.
But they had just received letters from Crispinus, who had sent word to everyone that Hannibal had got possession of Marcellus's seal.
τὸν οὖν ἄγγελον, ἵνα μὴ παραμένων ἐπιγνοίη τὰ γιγνόμενα, ἀπέπεμψαν ὑποσχόμενοι τὰ προστασσόμενα ποιήσειν, αὐτοὶ δʼ ὁπλισάμενοι τὴν ἐνέδραν ἐπὶ τῶν τειχῶν ἀνέμενον.
Therefore, lest the messenger remaining should discover what was happening, they sent him away, promising to do what was commanded, while they themselves, having armed, waited in ambush upon the walls.
καὶ προσιόντος τοῦ Ἀννίβου μετὰ Νομάδων, οὓς Ῥωμαϊκοῖς ὅπλοις ἐσκεύασε, τὰς μὲν πύλας ἐκ μηχανήματος ἀνέσπασαν ὡς δὴ Μαρκέλλου προσιόντος ἀσμενίζοντες, ἐσδεξάμενοι δὲ ὅσων εὐμαρῶς κρατήσειν ἔμελλον, αὖθις ἐκ τοῦ μηχανήματος αὐτὰς ἐπικαθῆκαν, καὶ τοὺς μὲν ἐσελθόντας ἔκτειναν, τοὺς δʼ ἔξω τῶν τειχῶν ἔτι περιεστῶτας ἄνωθεν ἔβαλλόν τε καὶ κατετίτρωσκον.
And when Hannibal approached with the Numidians, whom he had equipped with Roman arms, they drew up the gates by means of a mechanism as if gladly welcoming the approach of Marcellus; but having let in as many as they could easily master, they let the gates down again by the mechanism, and killed those who had entered, while they shot at and wounded from above those who were still standing outside the walls.
καὶ δευτέρας τῆσδε πείρας ὁ Ἀννίβας ἐπὶ τῇ πόλει σφαλεὶς ἀπεχώρει.
And having failed in this second attempt upon the city, Hannibal withdrew.
