§VII"τοῦ δὲ οἴνου καὶ τῶν ἄλλων ἄδην ἐνεπίμπλαντο οἱ Κελτοί, τήν τε φύσιν ὄντες ἀκρατεῖς, καὶ χώραν ἔχοντες, ὅτι μὴ πρὸς δημητριακοὺς καρπούς, τῶν ἄλλων ἄγονον καὶ ἀφυᾶ.
And the Celts sated themselves to excess with wine and other things, being by nature incontinent, and possessing a land which, except for Demeter's crops, was barren and unproductive of other things.
τά τε σώματα αὐτοῖς μεγάλα ὄντα καὶ τρυφηλὰ καὶ σαρκῶν ὑγρῶν μεστὰ ὑπὸ τῆς ἀδηφαγίας καὶ μέθης ἐς ὄγκον καὶ βάρος ἐξεχεῖτο, καὶ πρὸς δρόμους καὶ πόνους ἀδύνατα πάμπαν ἐγίγνετο· ὑπό τε ἱδρῶτος καὶ ἄσθματος, ὅπου τι δέοι κάμνειν, ἐξελύοντο ταχέως. "
Their bodies, being large, soft, and full of flabby flesh, became bloated and heavy because of their gluttony and drunkenness, and became altogether incapable of running and labor; and under sweat and panting, wherever they had to exert themselves, they quickly lost their strength.
§VIII"οὓς γυμνοὺς ἐπεδείκνυε Ῥωμαίοις,
οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὴν βοὴν βαρεῖαν ἱέντες ὑμῖν ἐν ταῖς μάχαις καὶ τὰ ὅπλα παταγοῦντες καὶ ξίφη μακρὰ καὶ κόμας αἰωροῦντες.
Showing them naked to the Romans, he said: 'These are they who utter their deep war-cry to you in battles, clash their weapons, brandish their long swords, and shake their long hair.
ὧν τὸ ἄτολμον ὁρῶντες, καὶ τὸ σῶμα μαλακὸν καὶ ἄτονον, προσίεσθε τῷ ἔργῳ. " §IX"τὸν δὲ δῆμον ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους ὁρᾶν, καὶ τοῖς πονουμένοις ἑτέρους νεαλεῖς ἐπιπέμπειν ἀεί.
Seeing their lack of courage, and that their body is soft and without tone, go to the task.' And the people watched from the wall, and kept sending other fresh men to help those who were hard-pressed.
οἱ δὲ Κελτοὶ κεκμηκότες ἀκμῆσι συμπλεκόμενοι ἔφευγον ἀτάκτως. "
The Celts, having grown weary and engaging with fresh men, fled in disorder.
§X"ὁ δὲ Κελτὸς ἀγανακτῶν καὶ λιφαιμῶν ἐδιωκε τὸν Οὐαλέριον, συγκαταπεσεῖν ἐπειγομενος· ὑπὸ δὲ τοὺς πόδας ἀναχωροῦντος ἀεὶ τοῦ Οὐαλερίου κατέπεσε πρηνὴς ὁ Κελτός.
The Celt, being indignant and bleeding, pursued Valerius, eager to bring him down with himself as he fell; but since Valerius kept retreating under his feet, the Celt fell headlong.
καὶ δεύτερον τοῦτο μονομάχιον ἐπὶ Κελτοῖς ἐμεγαλαύχουν οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι. "
And the Romans boasted greatly of this second single combat against the Celts.
§XI"ὅτι τὸ τῶν Σενόνων ἔθνος ἔνσπονδον ἦν Ῥωμαίοις, καὶ ἐμισθοφόρουν κατὰ Ῥωμαίων.
That the nation of the Senones was under treaty with the Romans, and yet served as mercenaries against the Romans.
ἡ δὲ βουλὴ πρέσβεις ἔπεμψεν ἐγκαλέσοντας ὅτι ὄντες ἔνσπονδοι μισθοφοροῦσι κατὰ Ῥωμαίων.
The senate sent envoys to accuse them of serving as mercenaries against the Romans while being under treaty.
τούτους Βριτόμαρις ὁ Κελτός, ἀγανακτῶν ὑπὲρ τοῦ πατρὸς ὅτι συμμαχῶν Τυρρηνοῖς ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίων ἐν τῷδε τῷ πολέμῳ διέφθαρτο, τά τε κηρύκεια φέροντας καὶ τὴν ἄσυλον ἐσθῆτα περικειμένους κατέτεμεν ἐς πολλά, καὶ τὰ μέρη τῶν σωμάτων διέρριψεν ἐς τὰ πεδία.
Britomaris the Celt, being indignant on behalf of his father because, while allied with the Tyrrhenians, he had been slain by the Romans in this war, cut them to many pieces, although they were bearing heralds' staffs and wearing the inviolable garb, and scattered the parts of their bodies over the plains.
καὶ τοῦ μύσους ὁ Κορνήλιος ἐν ὁδῷ πυθόμενος, ἐς τὰς Σενόνων πόλεις συντόνῳ σπουδῇ διὰ Σαβίνων καὶ Πικεντίνων ἐσβαλὼν ἅπαντα καθῄρει καὶ ἐνεπίμπρη, τῶν τε ἀνθρώπων τὰς μὲν γυναῖκας καὶ τὰ παιδία ἠνδραποδίζετο, τοὺς δὲ ἐν ἥβῃ πάντας ἔκτεινεν ὁμαλῶς, καὶ τὴν χώραν ἐλυμαίνετο ποικίλως καὶ ἄοικον ἐς τὸ λοιπὸν ἐποίει.
Cornelius, learning of this outrage on his way, invaded the cities of the Senones with intense haste through the Sabine and Picentene territories, and destroyed and burned everything; of the people, he enslaved the women and children, slew all the young men without distinction, ravaged the land in various ways, and made it uninhabitable for the future.
Βριτόμαριν δὲ μόνον ἦγεν αἰχμάλωτον ἐπὶ λύμῃ.
He led Britomaris alone as a prisoner for punishment.
ὕστερον δὲ Σένονες οὐκ ἔχοντες ἔτι πατρίδας ἐς ἃς διαφύγωσι, συνέπεσον ἐς χεῖρας ὑπὸ τόλμης τῷ Δομετίῳ, καὶ ἡττώμενοι σφᾶς αὐτοὺς ὑπʼ ὀργῆς διεχρῶντο μανικῶς.
Later, the Senones, having no longer any native land to which they might flee for safety, clashed in battle out of desperation with Domitius, and being defeated, in their rage they madly slew themselves.
καὶ δίκη μὲν ἥδε παρανομίας ἐς πρέσβεις ἐγένετο Σένοσιν. "
And this was the punishment for the lawlessness against the envoys that befell the Senones.
§XII"ὅτι οἱ Σαλύων δυνάσται, τοῦ ἔθνους ἡττηθέντος ὑπὸ Ῥωμαίων, ἐς Ἀλλόβριγας κατέφυγον.
That the chieftains of the Salyes, when their nation was defeated by the Romans, fled to the Allobroges.
καὶ αὐτοὺς ἐξαιτοῦντες οἱ Ῥωμαῖοι στρατεύουσιν ἐπὶ τοὺς Ἀλλόβριγας οὐκ ἐκδιδόντας, ἡγουμένου σφῶν Γναίου Δομετίου.
The Romans, demanding them, made war on the Allobroges who would not surrender them, under the leadership of Gnaeus Domitius.
ᾧ παροδεύοντι τὴν τῶν Σαλύων ἐντυγχάνει πρεσβευτὴς Βιτοίτου βασιλέως τῶν Ἀλλοβρίγων, ἐσκευασμένος τε πολυτελῶς, καὶ δορυφόροι παρείποντο αὐτῷ κεκοσμημένοι καὶ κύνες· δορυφοροῦνται γὰρ δὴ καὶ πρὸς κυνῶν οἱ τῇδε βάρβαροι.
As he was passing by, an envoy of Bituitus, king of the Allobroges, met him, sumptuously equipped, and guarded by attendants and dogs who accompanied him; for indeed the barbarians of these parts are guarded by dogs as well.
μουσικός τε ἀνὴρ εἵπετο, βαρβάρῳ μουσικῇ τὸν βασιλέα Βιτοῖτον, εἶτʼ Ἀλλόβριγας, εἶτα τὸν πρεσβευτὴν αὐτὸν ἔς τε γένος καὶ ἀνδρείαν καὶ περιουσίαν ὑμνῶν· οὗ δὴ καὶ μάλιστα ἕνεκα αὐτοὺς οἱ τῶν πρεσβευτῶν ἐπιφανεῖς ἐπάγονται.
A musician also followed, singing in barbarian music the praises of king Bituitus, then of the Allobroges, and then of the envoy himself, celebrating his lineage, bravery, and wealth; and indeed it is chiefly for this reason that the illustrious among the envoys bring them along.
ἀλλʼ ὁ μὲν συγγνώμην αἰτῶν τοῖς Σαλύων δυνάσταις ἀπέτυχεν. "
But he, asking for pardon for the chieftains of the Salyes, failed in his suit.
