§9.17.1Ἄρατος ὁ τῶν Ἀχαιῶν στρατηγὸς ἐπιβαλόμενος πραξικοπεῖν τὴν τῶν Κυναιθέων πόλιν, συνετάξατο πρὸς τοὺς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως αὐτῷ συνεργοῦντας ἡμέραν, ἐν ᾗ τὸν μὲν Ἄρατον ἔδει νυκτὸς παραγενηθέντα πρὸς τὸν ἀπὸ Κυναίθης ῥέοντα ποταμὸν ὡς ἐπὶ πρεπίου μένειν ἐνσχολάσαντα μετὰ τῆς δυνάμεως,
Aratus, the general of the Achaeans, undertaking to capture the city of the Cynaetheans by surprise, agreed upon a day with those inside the city who were cooperating with him, on which day Aratus was to arrive by night at the river flowing from Cynaetha and remain there to kill time with his force, as if to stay in a quiet place.
§9.17.2τοὺς δʼ ἔνδοθεν περὶ μέσον ἡμέρας, ὅτε λάβοιεν τὸν καιρόν, ἕνα μὲν αὑτῶν μεθʼ ἡσυχίας ἐν ἱματίῳ διὰ τῆς πύλης ἐκπέμψαι, καὶ κελεῦσαι προελθόντα στῆναι πρὸ τῆς πόλεως ἐπὶ τὸν συνταχθέντα τάφον,
Meanwhile, those inside the city, around midday, when they should find the opportunity, were to send out one of their number quietly through the gate wrapped in his cloak, and order him to go forward and stand before the city upon the designated tomb.
§9.17.3τοὺς δὲ λοιποὺς προσενεγκεῖν τὰς χεῖρας τοῖς ἄρχουσι, κοιμωμένοις κατὰ μέσον ἡμέρας, τοῖς εἰθισμένοις τηρεῖν τὴν πύλην.
The rest of them were to lay hands upon the commanders who were accustomed to guard the gate, while they were asleep at midday.
§9.17.4γενομένου δὲ τούτου σπουδῇ καταταχεῖν τοὺς Ἀχαιοὺς ἐκ τῆς ἐνέδρας ἔδει πρὸς τὴν πύλην.
When this was done, the Achaeans were to hasten with speed from their ambush to the gate.
§9.17.5τούτων δὲ διατεταγμένων καὶ τοῦ καιροῦ συνάψαντος, ὁ μὲν Ἄρατος ἧκε καὶ κρυφθεὶς κατὰ τὸν ποταμὸν ἔμενε τηρῶν τὸ σύνθημα·
When these arrangements had been made and the appointed time approached, Aratus arrived and remained hidden by the river, watching for the signal.
§9.17.6περὶ δὲ πέμπτην ὥραν ἔχων τις πρόβατα μαλακὰ τῶν εἰθισμένων περὶ πόλιν τρέφειν, δεηθεὶς ἐκ τοῦ καιροῦ πυθέσθαι τι τοῦ ποιμένος βιωτικόν, ἐξῆλθε διὰ τῆς πύλης ἐν ἱματίῳ καὶ στὰς ἐπὶ τὸν αὐτὸν τάφον περιεβλέπετο τὸν ποιμένα.
But about the fifth hour, a certain man who owned fine sheep, being one of those accustomed to breed them around the city, having a pressing need to ask his shepherd some domestic matter, went out through the gate in his cloak, and standing upon that very same tomb, looked around for his shepherd.
§9.17.7οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Ἄρατον ἀποδεδόσθαι σφίσι τὸ σύνθημα νομίσαντες σπουδῇ πρὸς τὴν πόλιν ἐφέροντο πάντες.
Whereupon those with Aratus, thinking that the signal had been given to them, all rushed with speed towards the city.
§9.17.8ταχὺ δὲ τῆς πύλης κλεισθείσης ὑπὸ τῶν ἐφεστώτων διὰ τὸ μηδέπω μηδὲν ὑπὸ τῶν ἔνδον ἡτοιμάσθαι, συνέβη μὴ μόνον τῆς πράξεως ἀποτυχεῖν τοὺς περὶ τὸν Ἄρατον, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως συμπράττουσιν αἰτίους γενέσθαι τῶν μεγίστων συμπτωμάτων· καταφανεῖς γὰρ γενόμενοι παραχρῆμα προβληθέντες ἀπέθανον.
But the gate being quickly shut by those on guard because nothing had yet been prepared by those inside, it happened that not only did Aratus and his men fail in their attempt, but they also became the cause of the greatest disasters to their accomplices inside the city; for these being discovered were immediately delivered up and put to death.
§9.17.9τί οὖν εἴποι τις ἂν τῆς περιπετείας αἴτιον γεγονέναι;
What then would anyone say was the cause of this mishap?
τὸ ποιήσασθαι τὸν στρατηγὸν ἁπλοῦν τὸ σύνθημα, νέον ἀκμὴν ὄντα καὶ τῆς τῶν διπλῶν συνθημάτων καὶ παρασυνθημάτων ἀκριβείας ἄπειρον.
It was that the general made the signal too simple, being still young and inexperienced in the precision required for double signals and countersignals.
§9.17.10οὕτως αἱ πολεμικαὶ πράξεις ἐν μικρῷ τὸ διαφέρον ἔχουσι τῆς ἐφʼ ἑκάτερα ῥοπῆς τῶν ἐκβαινόντων.
Thus it is that military operations have the turning point of their outcomes, on either side, in a very small difference.
