§5.20.1οἱ δὲ Μεσσήνιοι, κομισάμενοι τὰ γράμματα τὰ παρὰ τοῦ Φιλππίου τὰ περὶ τῆς στρατείας, τῇ μὲν ὁρμῇ τῶν ἄλλων οὐκ ἐλείποντο συμμάχων, ἀλλὰ τὴν ἔξοδον ἐποιήσαντο μετὰ σπουδῆς καὶ τοὺς ἀκμαιοτάτους ἄνδρας ἐξέπεμψαν, πεζοὺς μὲν δισχιλίους, ἱππεῖς δὲ διακοσίους.
The Messenians, having received the letter from Philip concerning the expedition, were not behind the other allies in their eagerness, but made their departure with haste and sent out their most vigorous men, two thousand infantry and two hundred cavalry.
§5.20.2τῷ δὲ μήκει τῆς ὁδοῦ καθυστερήσαντες τῆς εἰς τὴν Τεγέαν παρουσίας τοῦ Φιλίππου, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἠπόρουν τί δέον εἴη ποιεῖν·
But having fallen behind Philip's arrival in Tegea due to the length of the journey, they were at first at a loss as to what they ought to do.
§5.20.3ἀγωνιῶντες δὲ μὴ δόξαιεν ἐθελοκακεῖν διὰ τὰς προγεγενημένας περὶ αὐτοὺς ὑποψίας, ὥρμησαν διὰ τῆς Ἀργείας εἰς τὴν Λακωνικήν, βουλόμενοι συνάψαι τοῖς περὶ τὸν Φίλιππον.
Anxious lest they should seem to be acting with deliberate reluctance owing to the suspicions previously felt against them, they set out through the Argolid into Laconia, wishing to join Philip's forces.
§5.20.4παραγενόμενοι δὲ πρὸς Γλυμπεῖς χωρίον, ὃ κεῖται περὶ τοὺς ὅρους τῆς Ἀργείας καὶ Λακωνικῆς, πρὸς τοῦτο κατεστρατοπέδευσαν ἀπείρως ἅμα καὶ ῥᾳθύμως·
Arriving at Glympeis, a stronghold situated on the borders of the Argolid and Laconia, they encamped near it in an inexperienced and careless manner.
§5.20.5οὔτε γὰρ τάφρον οὔτε χάρακα τῇ παρεμβολῇ περιέβαλον οὔτε τόπον εὐφυῆ περιέβλεψαν, ἀλλὰ τῇ τῶν κατοικούντων τὸ χωρίον εὐνοίᾳ πιστεύοντες ἀκάκως πρὸ τοῦ τείχους αὐτοῦ παρενέβαλον.
For they neither threw a trench nor a palisade around their camp, nor did they look out for a naturally strong position, but, trusting simple-mindedly to the goodwill of those residing in the place, they encamped right in front of its wall.
§5.20.6ὁ δὲ Λυκοῦργος, προσαγγελθείσης αὐτῷ τῆς τῶν Μεσσηνίων παρουσίας, ἀναλαβὼν τοὺς μισθοφόρους καί τινας τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων προῆγε, καὶ συνάψας τοῖς τόποις ὑπὸ τὴν ἑωθινὴν ἐπέθετο τῇ στρατοπεδείᾳ τολμηρῶς. οἱ δὲ Μεσσήνιοι,
Lycurgus, on receiving the news of the arrival of the Messenians, took his mercenaries and some of the Lacedaemonians and advanced; and reaching the spot towards dawn, he boldly attacked their camp.
§5.20.7τἄλλα πάντα κακῶς βουλευσάμενοι, καὶ μάλιστα προελθεῖν ἐκ τῆς Τεγέας, μὴ κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος ἀξιόχρεως ὑπάρχοντες μήτε πιστεύοντες ἐμπείροις, παρʼ αὐτόν γε τὸν κίνδυνον κατὰ τὴν ἐπίθεσιν ὅμως τὸ δυνατὸν ἐκ τῶν πραγμάτων ἔλαβον πρὸς τὴν ἑαυτῶν σωτηρίαν·
The Messenians, although they had planned poorly in all other respects, and especially in advancing from Tegea when they were neither sufficient in number nor trusting in experienced guides, nevertheless, in the very presence of danger during the attack, took the only course possible under the circumstances for their own safety.
§5.20.8ἅμα γὰρ τῷ συνιδεῖν ἐπιφαινομένους τοὺς πολεμίους ἀφέμενοι πάντων σπουδῇ πρὸς τὸ χωρίον προσέφυγον.
For as soon as they saw the enemy appearing, they abandoned everything and fled in haste to the stronghold.
§5.20.9διόπερ Λυκοῦργος τῶν μὲν ἵππων ἐγκρατὴς ἐγένετο τῶν πλείστων καὶ τῆς ἀποσκευῆς, τῶν δʼ ἀνδρῶν ζωγρίᾳ μὲν οὐδενὸς ἐκυρίευσε, τῶν δʼ ἱππέων ὀκτὼ μόνον ἀπέκτεινε.
Consequently, Lycurgus became master of most of their horses and baggage, but he captured not a single man alive, and killed only eight of the cavalry.
§5.20.10Μεσσήνιοι μὲν οὖν τοιαύτῃ περιπετείᾳ χρησάμενοι πάλιν διʼ Ἄργους εἰς τὴν οἰκείαν ἀνεκομίσθησαν.
The Messenians, having met with such a disaster, returned through Argos to their own country.
§5.20.11ὁ δὲ Λυκοῦργος μετεωρισθεὶς ἐπὶ τῷ γεγονότι, παραγενόμενος εἰς τὴν Λακεδαίμονα περὶ παρασκευὴν ἐγίνετο καὶ συνήδρευε μετὰ τῶν φίλων, ὡς οὐκ ἐάσων τὸν Φίλιππον ἐπανελθεῖν ἐκ τῆς χώρας ἄνευ κινδύνου καὶ συμπλοκῆς.
Lycurgus, elated by this success, returned to Lacedaemon and occupied himself with preparations, taking counsel with his friends with the intention of not allowing Philip to depart from the country without danger and an engagement.
§5.20.12ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ἐκ τῆς Ἑλείας ἀναζεύξας προῆγε, πορθῶν ἅμα τὴν χώραν, καὶ τεταρταῖος αὖθις εἰς τὰς Ἀμύκλας κατῆρε παντὶ τῷ στρατεύματι περὶ μέσον ἡμέρας.
Meanwhile the king, having broken up his camp from Heleia, advanced, plundering the country as he went, and on the fourth day reached Amyclae again with his whole army about midday.
