The year of office of the younger Aratus as general happened to have just expired about the rising of the Pleiades; for such was the way the Achaean nation reckoned their time at that period.
§5.1.2διόπερ οὗτος μὲν ἀπετίθετο τὴν ἀρχήν, Ἐπήρατος δὲ παρελάμβανε τὴν τῶν Ἀχαιῶν ἡγεμονίαν· Αἰτωλῶν δὲ Δωρίμαχος ἐστρατήγει.
Therefore, he laid down his office, and Eperatus took over the leadership of the Achaeans, while Dorimachus was general of the Aetolians.

At the same period, at the beginning of summer, Hannibal, having already openly undertaken the war against the Romans, set out from Kaine Polis and crossed the river Iber, and thus began his attempt and his march into Italy; while the Romans dispatched Tiberius Sempronius with a force to Libya, and Publius Cornelius to Iberia; and Antiochus and Ptolemy, having despaired of embassies and of settling their dispute concerning Coele-Syria by discussion, were beginning to make war on each other.
§5.1.6ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς Φίλιππος, ἐνδεὴς ὢν σίτου καὶ χρημάτων εἰς τὰς δυνάμεις, συνῆγε τοὺς Ἀχαιοὺς διὰ τῶν ἀρχόντων εἰς ἐκκλησίαν.
King Philip, however, being in want of corn and money for his forces, assembled the Achaeans through their magistrates to a meeting.
§5.1.7ἁθροισθέντος δὲ τοῦ πλήθους εἰς Αἴγιον κατὰ τοὺς νόμους, ὁρῶν τοὺς μὲν περὶ Ἄρατον ἐθελοκακοῦντας διὰ τὴν περὶ τὰς ἀρχαιρεσίας γεγενημένην εἰς αὐτοὺς τῶν περὶ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν κακοπραγμοσύνην, τὸν δʼ Ἐπήρατον ἄπρακτον ὄντα τῇ φύσει καὶ καταγινωσκόμενον ὑπὸ πάντων, §5.1.8συλλογισάμενος ἐκ τῶν προειρημένων τὴν ἄγνοιαν τῶν περὶ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν καὶ Λεόντιον, ἔκρινεν αὖθις ἀντέχεσθαι τῶν περὶ τὸν Ἄρατον.
When the multitude had assembled at Aegium according to the laws, seeing that Aratus and his party were acting half-heartedly because of the intrigues carried on against them by Apelles and his party during the elections, and that Eperatus was naturally inefficient and despised by everyone, and having inferred from the aforementioned events the ignorance of Apelles and Leontius and their party, he decided to cling once more to Aratus and his friends.
§5.1.9πείσας οὖν τοὺς ἄρχοντας μεταγαγεῖν τὴν ἐκκλησίαν εἰς Σικυῶνα, λαβὼν τόν τε πρεσβύτερον καὶ τὸν νεώτερον Ἄρατον εἰς τὰς χεῖρας, καὶ πάντων τῶν γεγονότων ἀναθεὶς τὴν αἰτίαν ἐπὶ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν, παρεκάλει μένειν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τῆς ἐξ ἀρχῆς αἱρέσεως.
Having therefore persuaded the magistrates to transfer the assembly to Sicyon, and having taken both the elder and the younger Aratus into his confidence, and laid the blame for all that had happened upon Apelles, he exhorted them to remain steadfast in their original policy.
§5.1.10τῶν δὲ συγκαταθεμένων ἑτοίμως, εἰσελθὼν εἰς τοὺς Ἀχαιοὺς καὶ χρησάμενος συνεργοῖς τοῖς προειρημένοις, πάντα κατέπραξε τὰ πρὸς τὴν ἐπιβολήν.
Upon their readily consenting, he entered the assembly of the Achaeans, and employing the aforementioned men as his helpers, successfully carried through all that was necessary for his design.
§5.1.11πεντήκοντα μὲν γὰρ ἔδοξε τάλαντα τοῖς Ἀχαιοῖς εἰς τὴν πρώτην ἀναζυγὴν αὐτῷ δοῦσι παραχρῆμα τριμήνου μισθοδοτῆσαι τὴν δύναμιν καὶ σίτου προσθεῖναι μυριάδας· §5.1.12τὸ δὲ λοιπόν, ἕως ἂν παρὼν ἐν Πελοποννήσῳ συμπολεμῇ, τάλαντα λαμβάνειν ἑκάστου μηνὸς παρὰ τῶν Ἀχαιῶν ἑπτακαίδεκα.
For it was resolved that the Achaeans should immediately pay him fifty talents for his first start, provide three months' pay for his army, and add ten thousand medimni of corn; and for the future, as long as he remained in the Peloponnese and took part in the war, he was to receive seventeen talents a month from the Achaeans.
