When those of military age had assembled with their arms at Megalopolis in accordance with the decree of the Achaeans — for we had digressed from these matters — and when the Messenians again came before the assembly and begged them not to look on while they were so obviously treated in violation of the treaty, wishing also to share in the common alliance and being eager to be enrolled along with the others, regarding the alliance, the leaders of the Achaeans refused, stating that it was not possible to admit anyone without Philip and the allies; for the alliance formed through Antigonus during the Cleomenic times still remained sworn and valid for all — Achaeans, Epirotes, Phocians, Macedonians, Boeotians, Acarnanians, and Thessalians.
But they declared that they would march out and aid them, if the envoys who had arrived would give their own sons as hostages to the city of the Lacedaemonians, for the purpose of not making peace with the Aetolians without the consent of the Achaeans.
The Lacedaemonians also, having marched out in accordance with the alliance, were encamped on the borders of the Megalopolitans, holding the position of reserves and observers rather than of allies.
Aratus, having managed the business with the Messenians in this manner, sent messengers to the Aetolians, explaining the decisions and warning them to withdraw from the territory of the Messenians and not to touch Achaea; otherwise, he declared that he would treat those who entered as enemies.
Scopas and Dorimachus, on hearing these words and knowing that the Achaeans were assembled, thought it advantageous for themselves at that time to comply with the orders.
Immediately, therefore, they dispatched letter-carriers to Cyllene and to Ariston, the general of the Aetolians, requesting them to send the transport vessels of Elis with all speed to the island called Pheia.
They themselves, after two days, broke camp laden with booty and advanced towards Elis.
For the Aetolians always clung to the friendship of the Eleans, in order to obtain through them routes for their plundering and robbing expeditions from the Peloponnese.
