In the book prior to this one, we declared the causes of the second war that arose between the Romans and Carthaginians, and we related the matters concerning Hannibal's invasion of Italy, and in addition to this we expounded the battles that took place between them against one another up to the battle that occurred near the river Aufidus and the city of Cannae.
But now we shall relate the Greek events accomplished during the same periods as those mentioned above and from the hundred and fortieth Olympiad, first briefly reminding those who read this work of the preliminary sketch which we made in the second book concerning Greek affairs, and especially concerning the Achaean nation, because this constitution also took on an extraordinary growth both in the times before us and in our own.
For starting from Tisamenus, one of the sons of Orestes, and having stated that they were ruled by kings from him by hereditary descent down to Ogygus, and that after this, having adopted the noblest principle of democratic constitution, they were at first broken up into separate cities and villages by the kings from Macedonia, and next to this we undertook to relate how they began again to be of one mind, and when, and who first united them.
And in accordance with this, we showed in what manner and with what purpose, by bringing in the cities, they undertook to bring all the Peloponnesians under the same name and constitution.
And having declared generally concerning the aforementioned undertaking, and thereafter touching upon the detailed events in continuous order, we arrived at the expulsion of Cleomenes, the king of the Lacedaemonians.
And having summarized the events from the preliminary history up to the deaths of Antigonus, Celeucus, and Ptolemy, since all these passed away around the same time, we finally promised to make the start of our own main history the events following those aforementioned,
