Along the pass there was a level valley, which had high and continuous hills along each of its sides in length, and along its width, on the opposite side, a steep and difficult hill loomed over it, while on the rear side lay the lake, leaving an extremely narrow passage along the foot of the hills leading into the valley.

Having encamped on the previous day close to the lake itself at a very late hour, and when day broke immediately afterwards, he led the vanguard early in the morning along the lake into the valley lying below, wishing to engage with the enemy.
