Hannibal, on his part, hearing partly from the prisoners who were captured, and observing partly from what was being done, knew the rivalry of the commanders toward each other, and the impetuosity and ambition of Marcus.
§3.104.2διόπερ οὐ καθʼ αὑτοῦ, πρὸς αὑτοῦ δὲ νομίσας εἶναι τὰ συμβαίνοντα περὶ τοὺς ἐναντίους, ἐγίνετο περὶ τὸν Μάρκον, σπουδάζων τὴν τόλμαν ἀφελέσθαι καὶ προκαταλαβεῖν αὐτοῦ τὴν ὁρμήν.
Therefore, thinking that what was happening among his opponents was not against his interests but in his favor, he turned his attention to Marcus, being eager to take away his boldness and to anticipate his impetuosity.
§3.104.3οὔσης δέ τινος ὑπεροχῆς μεταξὺ τῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς τοῦ Μάρκου στρατοπεδείας δυναμένης ἑκατέρους βλάπτειν, ἐπεβάλετο καταλαβεῖν ταύτην.
Since there was a certain eminence between his own camp and that of Marcus which was capable of harming both sides, he undertook to seize it.
σαφῶς δὲ γινώσκων ἐκ τοῦ προγεγονότος κατορθώματος ὅτι παρέσται βοηθῶν ἐκ χειρὸς πρὸς ταύτην τὴν ἐπιβολήν, ἐπινοεῖ τι τοιοῦτον.
And knowing clearly from the previous success that Marcus would immediately come to the rescue against this attempt, he devised some such plan.
§3.104.4τῶν γὰρ τόπων τῶν περὶ τὸν λόφον ὑπαρχόντων ψιλῶν μέν, πολλὰς δὲ καὶ παντοδαπὰς ἐχόντων περικλάσεις κοιλότητας, ἐξέπεμψε τῆς νυκτὸς εἰς τὰς ἐπιτηδειοτάτας ὑποβολὰς ἀνὰ διακοσίους καὶ τριακοσίους, πεντακοσίους μὲν ἱππεῖς, ψιλοὺς δὲ καὶ πεζοὺς τοὺς πάντας εἰς πεντακισχιλίους.
For since the places around the hill, though bare of trees, had many and various folds and hollows, he sent out by night into the most suitable places of concealment, in groups of two hundred and three hundred, five hundred cavalry, and of light-armed and foot soldiers in all up to five thousand.
§3.104.5ἵνα δὲ μὴ πρῲ κατοπτευθῶσιν ὑπὸ τῶν εἰς τὰς προνομὰς ἐκπορευομένων, ἅμα τῷ διαυγάζειν κατελάμβανε τοῖς εὐζώνοις τὸν λόφον.
In order that they might not be discovered early in the morning by those going out for foraging, at dawn he seized the hill with his light-armed troops.
