After the dispatch of the consuls Tiberius and Claudius to the Istrians and Agrians, the senate transacted business with the ambassadors who had come from the Lycians, when the summer was already drawing to a close; these ambassadors had arrived in Rome when the Lycians had already been completely subdued in the war, but they had been dispatched a considerable time before.
For the Xanthians, at the time when they were about to enter the war, had sent ambassadors, namely Nicostratus and his colleagues, both to Achaea and to Rome.
Having arrived in Rome at that time, they aroused many in the senate to pity by bringing before their eyes the harshness of the Rhodians and their own critical situation.
And finally they brought the senate to such a point as to send ambassadors to Rhodes to make it clear that, upon a re-examination of the memoranda which the ten commissioners had drawn up in Asia when they were settling the affairs of Antiochus, the Lycians were found to have been given to the Rhodians not as a gift, but rather as friends and allies.
But though such a settlement was made, what had happened did not please many people at all.
For it seemed that the Romans were managing the contest between the Rhodians and Lycians, wishing that the resources and treasures of the Rhodians should be completely exhausted, because they had heard of the bride's escort recently conducted by them for Perseus, and of the trial of their ships.
For it had happened a short time before that the Rhodians had brilliantly and magnificently, with great preparation, made a trial of all the vessels they possessed.
For indeed a quantity of timber for shipbuilding was given by Perseus to the Rhodians, and a golden strigil had been presented to each of the crew of the undecked vessels who had recently escorted Laodice to him.
