§2.9.1ἡ δὲ Τεύτα, τῆς ὥρας ἐπιγενομένης, ἐπισκευάσασα λέμβους πλείους τῶν πρότερον ἐξαπέστειλε πάλιν εἰς τοὺς κατὰ τὴν Ἑλλάδα τόπους.
Teuta, when the season arrived, having fitted out more light vessels than before, dispatched them again to the regions of Greece.
§2.9.2ὧν οἱ μὲν διὰ πόρου τὸν πλοῦν ἐπὶ τὴν Κέρκυραν ἐποιοῦντο, μέρος δέ τι προσέσχε τὸν τῶν Ἐπιδαμνίων λιμένα, λόγῳ μὲν ὑδρείας καὶ ἐπισιτισμοῦ χάριν, ἔργῳ δʼ ἐπιβουλῆς καὶ πράξεως ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν.
Of these, some made their voyage through the strait toward Corcyra, while a certain part put in at the harbor of the Epidamnians, ostensibly for the sake of watering and provisioning, but in reality for a plot and action against the city.
§2.9.3τῶν δʼ Ἐπιδαμνίων ἀκάκως ἅμα καὶ ῥᾳθύμως αὐτοὺς παραδεξαμένων, εἰσελθόντες ἐν αὐτοῖς τοῖς περιζώμασιν ὡς ὑδρευσόμενοι, μαχαίρας ἔχοντες ἐν τοῖς κεραμίοις, οὕτως κατασφάξαντες τοὺς φυλάττοντας τὴν πύλην ταχέως ἐγκρατεῖς ἐγένοντο τοῦ πυλῶνος.
Since the Epidamnians received them unsuspiciously and carelessly, they entered in nothing but their loincloths as if to fetch water, having daggers hidden in their water-jars; and having in this manner slaughtered the guards of the gate, they quickly became masters of the gateway.
§2.9.4ἐπιγενομένης δὲ κατὰ τὸ συντεταγμένον ἐνεργῶς τῆς ἀπὸ τῶν πλοίων βοηθείας, παραδεξάμενοι τούτους ῥᾳδίως κατεῖχον τὰ πλεῖστα τῶν τειχῶν.
When the reinforcement from the ships came up vigorously according to the plan, they received them and easily occupied the greater part of the walls.
§2.9.5τῶν δʼ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ἀπαρασκεύως μὲν διὰ τὸ παράδοξον, ἐκθύμως δὲ βοηθούντων καὶ διαγωνιζομένων, συνέβη τοὺς Ἰλλυριοὺς ἐπὶ πολὺν χρόνον ἀντιποιησαμένους τέλος ἐκπεσεῖν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως.
Although the people of the city were unprepared owing to the unexpectedness of the event, they brought aid and fought with all their heart; and so it came about that the Illyrians, after disputing the place for a long time, were finally driven out of the city.
§2.9.6Ἐπιδάμνιοι μὲν οὖν ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ πράξει διὰ μὲν τὴν ὀλιγωρίαν ἐκινδύνευσαν ἀποβαλεῖν τὴν πατρίδα, διὰ δὲ τὴν εὐψυχίαν ἀβλαβῶς ἐπαιδεύθησαν πρὸς τὸ μέλλον.
Thus the Epidamnians in this affair, on the one hand, came near losing their country through their carelessness, but on the other, thanks to their courage, they were disciplined for the future without suffering harm.
§2.9.7τῶν δʼ Ἰλλυριῶν οἱ προεστῶτες κατὰ σπουδὴν ἀναχθέντες καὶ συνάψαντες τοῖς προπλέουσι κατῆραν εἰς τὴν Κέρκυραν· καὶ ποιησάμενοι καταπληκτικὴν τὴν ἀπόβασιν ἐνεχείρησαν πολιορκεῖν τὴν πόλιν.
Meanwhile, the commanders of the Illyrians, having put to sea in haste and joined those sailing ahead, touched at Corcyra; and having made a terrifying landing, they set about besieging the city.
§2.9.8ὧν συμβαινόντων οἱ Κερκυραῖοι δυσχρηστούμενοι καὶ δυσελπίστως διακείμενοι τοῖς ὅλοις ἐπρεσβεύοντο πρός τε τοὺς Ἀχαιοὺς καὶ τοὺς Αἰτωλούς, ἅμα δὲ τούτοις Ἀπολλωνιᾶται καὶ Ἐπιδάμνιοι, δεόμενοι σφίσι βοηθεῖν κατὰ σπουδὴν καὶ μὴ περιιδεῖν σφᾶς αὐτοὺς ἀναστάτους γενομένους ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰλλυριῶν.
While these things were happening, the Corcyreans, being in great distress and feeling hopeless about the whole situation, sent envoys to the Achaeans and the Aetolians, and at the same time with them the Apolloniates and the Epidamnians did the same, begging them to come to their aid in haste and not to allow themselves to be driven from their homes by the Illyrians.
