As day was already beginning to break, the shouting was indistinguishable, but from it there rang out most of all the call for the king.
§15.31.2τὸ μὲν οὖν πρῶτον οἱ Μακεδόνες ἐξαναστάντες κατελάβοντο τὸν χρηματιστικὸν πυλῶνα τῶν βασιλείων·
At first, then, the Macedonians, having risen, occupied the state portal of the palace.
§15.31.3μετὰ δέ τινα χρόνον ἐπιγνόντες ποῦ τῆς αὐλῆς ἦν ὁ βασιλεύς, περιελθόντες τὰς μὲν πρώτας τῆς [πρώτης] σύριγγος ἐξέβαλον θύρας, ἐγγίσαντες δὲ τῆς δευτέρας ᾐτοῦντο τὸν παῖδα μετὰ κραυγῆς.
After some time, having discovered where in the palace the king was, they went round, forced open the first doors of the underground passage, and having approached the second, demanded the boy with shouting.
§15.31.4οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα, βλέποντες ἤδη τὰ καθʼ αὑτούς, ἐδέοντο τῶν σωματοφυλάκων πρεσβεῦσαι περὶ αὑτῶν πρὸς τοὺς Μακεδόνας, δηλοῦντας ὅτι τῆς ἐπιτροπείας ἐκχωροῦσι καὶ τῆς ἄλλης ἐξουσίας καὶ τῶν τιμῶν, ἔτι δὲ τῶν χορηγίων ὧν ἔχουσι πάντων, §15.31.5αὐτὸ δὲ τὸ πνευμάτιον δέονται συγχωρηθῆναι σφίσι μετὰ τῆς ἀναγκαίας τροφῆς, ἵνα χωρήσαντες εἰς τὴν ἐξ ἀρχῆς διάθεσιν μηδὲ βουληθέντες ἔτι δύνωνται λυπεῖν μηδένα.
Agathocles and his party, seeing their situation now, begged the bodyguards to go as envoys on their behalf to the Macedonians, declaring that they would retire from the regency, from all other power and honors, and also from all the allowances they possessed, and they begged that their bare life be granted to them together with necessary sustenance, so that, having retired to their original condition, even if they wished, they would no longer be able to harm anyone.
§15.31.6τῶν μὲν οὖν ἄλλων σωματοφυλάκων οὐδεὶς ὑπήκουσεν, Ἀριστομένης δὲ μόνος ὑπέστη τὴν χρείαν ταύτην ὁ μετά τινα χρόνον ἐπὶ τῶν πραγμάτων γενόμενος.
Now none of the other bodyguards complied, but Aristomenes alone undertook this duty, who some time later became the head of state.
ὁ δʼ ἀνὴρ οὗτος τὸ μὲν γένος ἦν Ἀκαρνάν, §15.31.7καθʼ ὅσον δὲ προβαίνων κατὰ τὴν ἡλικίαν, γενόμενος κύριος τῶν ὅλων πραγμάτων, κάλλιστα καὶ σεμνότατα δοκεῖ προστῆναι τοῦ τε βασιλέως καὶ τῆς βασιλείας, κατὰ τοσοῦτον κεκολακευκέναι τὴν Ἀγαθοκλέους εὐκαιρίαν.
This man was by birth an Acarnanian, and in proportion as in his advanced years, having become master of the whole administration, he is thought to have protected both the king and the kingdom in the most honorable and dignified manner, in that same proportion he had flattered the prosperity of Agathocles.
§15.31.8πρῶτος μὲν γὰρ ὡς ἑαυτὸν ἐπὶ δεῖπνον καλέσας τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα χρυσοῦν στέφανον ἀνέδωκε μόνῳ τῶν παρόντων, ὃ τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν αὐτοῖς ἔθος ἐστὶ μόνοις συγχωρεῖσθαι, §15.31.9πρῶτος δὲ τὴν εἰκόνα τοῦ προειρημένου φέρειν ἐτόλμησεν ἐν τῷ δακτυλίῳ· γενομένης δὲ θυγατρὸς αὐτῷ ταύτην Ἀγαθόκλειαν προσηγόρευσεν.
For he was the first to invite Agathocles to dinner at his house and present him alone of those present with a golden crown, which is a custom allowed to the kings themselves alone, and he was the first who dared to wear the portrait of the aforesaid on his ring; and when a daughter was born to him, he named her Agathoclea.
§15.31.10ἀλλʼ ἴσως ὑπὲρ μὲν τούτων ἐξαρκεῖ καὶ τὰ νῦν εἰρημένα· λαβὼν δὲ τὰς προειρημένας ἐντολὰς καὶ διά τινος ῥινοπύλης ἐξελθών, ἧκε πρὸς τοὺς Μακεδόνας.
But perhaps what has now been said is sufficient about these matters; having received the aforesaid instructions and gone out through a certain side-gate, he came to the Macedonians.
§15.31.11βραχέα δʼ αὐτοῦ διαλεχθέντος καὶ δηλώσαντος τὴν προαίρεσιν, ἐπεβάλοντο μὲν οἱ Μακεδόνες παραχρῆμα συγκεντῆσαι, ταχὺ δέ τινων ὑπερεχόντων αὐτοῦ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ παραιτησαμένων τοὺς πολλούς, ἐπανῆλθε λαβὼν ἐντολὴν ἢ τὸν βασιλέα πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἄγονθʼ ἥκειν ἢ μηδʼ αὐτὸν ἐξιέναι.
After he had spoken briefly and declared their purpose, the Macedonians attempted to stab him to death on the spot, but as some quickly held their hands over him and begged the majority, he returned, having received the instruction either to come back bringing the king to them, or not to come out himself.
§15.31.12τὸν μὲν οὖν Ἀριστομένην ταῦτʼ εἰπόντες οἱ Μακεδόνες ἀπέπεμψαν, αὐτοὶ δὲ ταῖς δευτέραις θύραις ἐγγίσαντες ἐξέωσαν καὶ ταύτας.
So the Macedonians sent Aristomenes back with these words, and they themselves, approaching the second doors, forced these open as well.
§15.31.13οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Ἀγαθοκλέα θεωροῦντες τὴν τῶν Μακεδόνων βίαν διά τε τῶν ἐνεργουμένων καὶ διὰ τῆς ἀποκρίσεως, τὸ μὲν πρῶτον ἐπεβάλοντο διὰ τῆς θύρας προτείναντες τὰς χεῖρας, ἡ δʼ Ἀγαθόκλεια καὶ τοὺς μασθούς, οἷς ἔφη θρέψαι τὸν βασιλέα, δεῖσθαι τῶν Μακεδόνων, πᾶσαν προϊέμενοι φωνὴν
