To Hasdrubal, none of these things was pleasing, but since the circumstances no longer allowed any delay, as he saw the enemy drawn up and advancing, he was forced to draw up the Iberians and the Gauls who were with him.

Having placed the elephants, ten in number, in front, and having increased the depth of his ranks, and having concentrated his whole force in a narrow space, and furthermore, having placed himself in the center of the line under the protection of the elephants, he made an assault upon the enemy's left, having pre-determined that in the present danger he must either conquer or die.
§11.1.4ὁ μὲν οὖν Λίβιος ἀντεπῄει τοῖς πολεμίοις σοβαρῶς καὶ συμβαλὼν ταῖς αὑτοῦ δυνάμεσιν ἐμάχετο γενναίως·
Now Livius went to meet the enemy vigorously and, engaging with his own forces, fought bravely.
§11.1.5ὁ δὲ Κλαύδιος ἐπὶ τοῦ δεξιοῦ κέρατος τεταγμένος προάγειν μὲν εἰς τοὔμπροσθεν καὶ περικερᾶν τοὺς ὑπεναντίους οὐκ ἐδύνατο διὰ τὰς προκειμένας δυσχωρίας, αἷς πεπιστευκὼς Ἀσδρούβας ἐποιήσατο τὴν ἐπὶ τὰ λαιὰ τῶν πολεμίων ἔφοδον.
But Claudius, who was posted on the right wing, was unable to advance forward and outflank the enemy because of the difficult ground in front of him, trusting in which Hasdrubal had made his assault on the enemy's left.
§11.1.6ἀπόρως δὲ διακείμενος ἐπὶ τῷ μηδὲν πράττειν, ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ τοῦ συμβαίνοντος ἔμαθεν ὃ δέον ἦν πράττειν.
Being at a loss because he was doing nothing, he learned what he ought to do from the very circumstance that was occurring.
§11.1.7διὸ καὶ παραδεξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν δεξιῶν τοὺς αὑτοῦ στρατιώτας κατὰ τὸν ὄπισθεν τόπον τῆς μάχης, καὶ τὸ λαιὸν ὑπεράρας τῆς ἰδίας παρεμβολῆς, προσέβαλε κατὰ κέρας τοῖς Καρχηδονίοις ἐπὶ τὰ θηρία.
Therefore, having withdrawn his own soldiers from the right wing to the rear of the battle, and having passed beyond the left of his own camp, he fell upon the Carthaginians in the flank, at the place where the elephants were.
§11.1.8καὶ μέχρι μὲν [οὖν] τούτων ἀμφίδοξος ἦν ἡ νίκη.
And up to this point indeed the victory was doubtful.
οἵ τε γὰρ ἄνδρες ἐφαμίλλως ἐκινδύνευον ἀμφότεροι διὰ τὸ μήτε τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις ἐλπίδα καταλείπεσθαι σωτηρίας, εἰ σφαλεῖεν, μήτε τοῖς Ἴβηρσι καὶ Καρχηδονίοις· τά τε θηρία κοινὴν ἀμφοῖν παρείχοντο τὴν χρείαν ἐν τῇ μάχῃ·
For both sides risked their lives with equal rivalry, because no hope of safety was left either to the Romans, if they should fail, or to the Iberians and Carthaginians; and the elephants also provided a common trouble to both in the battle.
§11.1.9μέσα γὰρ ἀπειλημμένα καὶ συνακοντιζόμενα διετάραττε καὶ τὰς τῶν Ῥωμαίων καὶ τὰς τῶν Ἰβήρων τάξεις.
For, being caught in the middle and showered with javelins from all sides, they threw into confusion the ranks of both the Romans and the Iberians.
§11.1.10ἅμα δὲ τῷ τοὺς περὶ τὸν Κλαύδιον προσπεσεῖν κατʼ οὐρὰν τοῖς πολεμίοις ἄνισος ἦν ἡ μάχη, τῶν μὲν κατὰ πρόσωπον, τῶν δὲ κατὰ νώτου τοῖς Ἴβηρσι προσκειμένων.
But as soon as Claudius's men fell upon the enemy in the rear, the battle became unequal, with some pressing upon the Iberians in front and others in the rear.
§11.1.11ἐξ οὗ καὶ συνέβη τοὺς πλείστους τῶν Ἰβήρων ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ τῆς μάχης καιρῷ κατακοπῆναι.
As a result of which it happened that most of the Iberians were cut down in the very moment of the battle.
§11.1.12τῶν δὲ θηρίων τὰ μὲν ἓξ ἅμα τοῖς ἀνδράσιν ἔπεσε, τὰ δὲ τέτταρα διωσάμενα τὰς τάξεις ὕστερον ἑάλω μεμονωμένα καὶ ψιλὰ τῶν Ἰνδῶν.
Of the elephants, six fell together with their men, and four, having forced their way through the ranks, were later captured, isolated and deprived of their Indians.
