The Apasiacae dwell between the Oxus and the Tanais, of which the former empties into the Hyrcanian Sea, and the Tanais flows out into Lake Maeotis; both rivers are navigable in size.
And it seems wonderful how the Nomads, crossing the Oxus, come into Hyrcania on foot with their horses.
There are two explanations of this matter, one plausible, the other strange but not impossible.
For the Oxus has its sources in the Caucasus, and after being greatly increased in Bactria by other waters flowing into it, is carried through a plain country with a full and turbid stream.
When it reaches the desert, it forces its stream by violence over certain precipitous rocks, owing to the volume of water and the steep descent of the ground above, to such an extent that its fall leaps forward more than a stade beyond the lower parts of the rock.
It is through this place, they say, that the Apasiacae cross on foot with their horses into Hyrcania, close by the rock itself and under the fall of the river.
The other explanation has a statement more plausible than the former.
For as the ground below contains large flat rocks upon which the river falls, they say that the river, hollowing out and tearing through these by the force of its current, is carried deep under the earth for a short distance, and then appears again.
And the barbarians, through their experience, make their passage on horseback into Hyrcania at the place where the stream is interrupted. —
